Interesting stuff on the 70mm. Did a little searching, and it only opened in 8 theaters in 70mm initially.

I think an IB would have blown the 70mm away in terms of picture quality… But the larger format does have an advantage in terms of lumens and screen size. The larger screen you have, the more light you need to push through the film to get it to light up the screen. There’s only so much light you can squeeze through a 35mm frame before you end up melting the film. 70mm is able to ‘dissipate’ the heat so to speak, and uses a larger surface area, so you can get a brighter image on a larger screen.

Just watched the preview and must say how great it looks. To my eyes the colours are much more pleasing and authentic.
Working on my D.I.Y. anamorphic lens for my projector and cant wait to get this version up on the “widescreen”. Good job and keep up the good work!
Missing 26 GOUT frames from the start of the reel (these things happen)
and none after that!But did you spot the 26 frames I replaced using the LPP? If you look at the lightsaber duel, there are several frames that were missing from the Tech and I replaced using the LPP. At full speed it’s hard to spot unless you are looking for it, but if you slow it down, you’ll see it gets much grainier.

The 70mm picture quality could potentially be quite nice, though with an aspect ratio of 2.2:1, some image would be missing from the sides.
The soundtrack is quite the most desirable aspect of it, of course. I know there is at least one privately owned 70mm print of the first movie out there, but nobody seems to know who actually owns it. Most likely this person would be unwilling to loan it out for scanning. I’ve never heard anything about whether there are any existing copies of the other two.
Re 70mm, I have seen two 70mm Star Wars prints, only one was in projectable shape and both were far too faded to red to be useful for restoration of the image, it is extremely likely that they all are far too faded now.
Plus 70mm is cropped at the sides, so I don’t think it will be a lot of use for the visual restoration.Any 70 prints would be Eastman likely and virtually all from that vintage are typically in tatters or so faded they are unprojectable. Additionally the mag tracks can go if not properly stored.
Imagewise, the only benefits would be the finer grain and what if any visual changes were induced through the blowup–albeit those you could tell through heavy fading. The big draw will be the Dolby 70 baby boom in the six track mag stripe. If it could be found, transferred and turned it would become a most powerful ally. 😉
But of course all this would be much easier if we could access the source and do a straight transfer, much like some 70mm mixes that got direct transfers to LD and DVD. Like the earlier Criterion 2001, any magnetic we might be able to work with would likely have some distortion or damage after all these years.The IB will be the best image overall and the most filmic/organic feeling. The Eastman/LPP will be what you’d have seen in 1977 and what the movie should look like from the processes of the day on general release.

Exciting to know you have the capability! Even though the 70mm prints are cropped you could still use them with a feathered edging blending into 35 at the sides. Might be distracting for long scenes, but worth a try! I’ll keep a look out on eBay and mortgage my house 😉
I personally don’t think it’s worth it as inserts (except maybe the couple of shots that are different), but an entire 70mm release would be interesting.

Yeah, that too. Doesn’t seem like that would be worth the price though when we already have tons of great audio sources and fan mixes.

They ARE great (no doubt about that) but while the original stereo and mono mixes are authentic, the surround sound mixes are just educated guesses on Hairy_hen’s part. It would be fantastic to have the authentic mixes even if it’s just for educational purposes.

I believe it is, yes. The LPP is actually a little sharper than our scan of it, but it is certainly not as sharp as the Tech.

The Tech IB should definitely be used as a video source (not simply a color reference) in Despecialized 3.0 if it looks that sharp and color-vibrant.

When everything is all collected, scanned, tweaked, twerked, worked and released, it’s gonna be a lot of resources no one expected to be in the hands of mere mortals like us.

Perhaps the next time that a BD compatible ISO file is created from a film print, each m2ts file can be devoted to one reel of the film.
That way, when us old guys watch the video, we’ll notice the 2 bright flashes of a small circle on the top right of the screen and know that a new reel is about to come up. Then, if there is a blackout between the change of the 2 m2ts files, we’ll pretend that the drunk projectionist was slow in starting to play the next reel of film.
That effect will add to the grindhouse atmosphere 😃
