Actually, you're not far off. It turns out my '86 VHS tape had somehow made its way into my '84 box. I was watching the wrong tape thinking it was the 1984 release. I should have known better. Sorry to cause confusion.

Well, I wouldn't go that far. Consider the Special Edition sound mixes for ESB and ROTJ. They relied on the original 70mm mixes and restored a lot of alternate material. I believe that's very significant, especially for ESB where the sound mix is vastly different.
