I don’t have much to contribute, but I would definitely give what I can to help you rebuild.

I would definitely help pitch in a few Empirial credits. Poita has done so much for this forum, it’s nuts!

What’s the internal temperature of a TaunTaun? Luke warm.

I definitely know how you feel, poita. I’m really sorry to hear that happen to you!

That just stinks. I really wish I could help out, but I’m not in a position to do anything, and what’s lost is lost. This stuff happening just makes me afraid that I’ll lose all of my files in a system failure of some sort. Best of luck to you, Poita.

Just a quick note to say I have had a rather catastrophic power supply/hardware failure here, it has taken out my workstation, the internal RAID, the external RAID, my Titan, Motherboard, Xeon CPU, SSDs and pretty much everything that was plugged in at the time. Chips blown off drives, tracks burned off the motherboard, it is a disaster.

That sounds terrible, i can only imagine how depressing that must feel.

The only computing I am currently running is on my phone, so please give me some leeway with answering emails etc. and preferably contact me via gmail or via the forum as I can access those from anywhere.

Can you check PMs on your phone?

I’ve lost a lot to drive crashes. I had a set of rips of the English dub of Pretty Cure - good audio, too - that just can’t be found anymore. HDTV rips of Tenkai Knights in Japanese. Episodes of classic Doraemon. Almost lost my work subbing one of the Doraemon movies, but I had that backed up offsite. I’ve started to get very paranoid since then. 😕

Thanks for the suggestion, I am currently deciding whether to take it as a sign from the gods and bow out of the hobby, or start over.

Maybe just rearrange your priorities a bit? I know you’ve put far too much money into this hobby to just call it quits.

Good to hear that a lot of the data was non-vital, but I know it still sucks to lose everything like that. Maybe some of it can be repaired.

As Jason once bitterly complained: “The gods want their entertainment. The gods are cruel! In time all men shall learn to live without them.”
Or Conan's sage philosophy about the gods: “So grant me one request. Grant me revenge! And if you do not listen, then to hell with you!”

BTW, as a snub to the gods, your hard drives may still be salvageable. It’s only the electronics that were fried, not necessarily damage to the platens, too. It may be worth the gamble/expense to have the drives platens physically moved into the working case of an identical drive (same make/model/controller-chip) in a “clean room”, of course.

I have sent the drives off for a free assessment at a data recovery company I used to work for, but I’m not holding out a lot of hope. I would love to get the last half year of work back.

Best of luck. I’m glad you don’t have to deal with any PCB swappage yourself.

I already tried swapping the PC boards, they are external and an easy swap-out, but the drives didn’t even spin up so I think it probably fried the motors/head mechanism.

Hope the data recovery is successful. In the meantime, I just read this and found it pertinent:

I was about to post this then I saw someone beat me to the punch. Could’ve saved you a lot of trouble recently haha

Technology neve ceases to amaze me. Imagine how much could be stored on a DVD sized disc! I imagine someday we’ll be popping these into our media players.

Dear God, the news of this massive loss is devastating! We could do with a few quartz discs right about now!

I’m VERY sorry to hear about this Poita. Is it possible that your homeowner’s insurance could help replace the damaged items? I don’t know exactly how that works, or what is/isn’t covered but it might be worth a phone call.

Best of luck and hang in there. 😃

GIO Insurance are a pack of dicks!

I have been fighting with them for the past week, despite the computer equipment being listed with a value, they are disputing it, saying that this is a graphics workstation, not a ‘home computer’ and would have required separate listing and approval. My solicitor does not think that we can make them pay.
So to anyone else with expensive computer gear, notify your insurance company with an itemised list and get it in writing from them that it is explicitly covered, apparently anything less than that and they can weasle out of it.

I’m going to disappear for the next week or so, my little girl has been in hospital for a few days, and they can’t work out what is wrong, and she is getting worse, so we are being transferred to Sydney (4 hours or so away), so I’ll be offline in analogue world for a while.

All my hopes and best wishes for you and your family my friend. Take your time, take care of your family, we’ll be here supporting you.

I am also sorry to hear about the electronics disaster you’ve had. It’s never an easy thing because it shows us how vulnerable we can be in the digital age. It is also why the scanning and archiving you’ve been doing is so important … because that media may disappear as well and it’s a part of our history.

I support which ever decision you make at this point, no questions asked.

Hi Poita,
I’m very sorry to hear about your family’s misfortune with health, as well as your own, and I hope you have speedy recoveries on all counts. On top of which it must be dreadfully frustrating to have gremlins take out your hardware 😦
I don’t write on this forum nearly enough, so I think I’m one of the many people who, while not central to the discussions, benefit greatly from the hard work and financial sacrifice put in by yourself and many others. I’ve enjoyed all of the restorations, but particularly the two currently released 35mm scans done by Team -1. From the screenshots you’ve posted it looks like you have prints capable of making even better versions! For me, and possibly others, the joy of these new scans of Star Wars is the colour. I never knew, for example, that SW 1977 had so many wonderful blues, greens, yellows and oranges that are buried in official releases. On the face if it, that shouldn’t matter too much, but strangely and magically it makes the experience of watching the films that much more vivid, cinematic and involving. You wouldn’t think you could watch a movie for maybe the tenth time and feel like you’ve never seen it before. It’s awesome.
I only came across you’re projects very recently, so I’m not certain how far along in the process you were before your setup was taken out. I’m sure no-one would blame you for seeing this as a sign to wind down, but from what little I’ve seen it seems you have the capability, in your own time, to produce some stunning releases.
I’m extremely grateful to you and everyone else who works on these for making star wars visually spectacular again!
Wishing you all the very best from London.

This is absolutely heartbreaking to read. As someone who lost months of work in the past I can feel your pain. In fact I got out of working in 3D animation just because of how much stuff I lost to a hard drive catastrophe. If I can give you any advice it would be not to give up the hobby. It’s the one thing I regret more than losing all my work. Hang in there man, we’re all pulling for you.

Yeah, all insurance companies are a pack of dicks. I’m sure your solicitor has advised that you escalate the complaint and then further escalate it to the Ombudsman who can potentially make them pay if they find in your favour.

I am currently deciding whether to take it as a sign from the gods and bow out of the hobby, or start over. I lost so much work.

If you’d like another suggestion- if your data is lost then perhaps start on a new project for now and come back to what you had been working on later.

I’m very sorry to hear about your misfortune, if I was a religious person I’d be demanding that my deity set things right! 😃

I am going to be withdrawing from the forums here, the equipment destruction has given me reason to pause, and to be honest, the current media noise re Star Wars and fan restoration has me concerned as well.
My work has always been about preservation, both helping people with resources and technique to learn how to do it themselves, and to undertake my own preservation projects to help ensure the films I love are not lost forever. I have no interest in distributing restorations, my only goal is preservation of films that have not already been preserved.

I have thought a lot about my resources, and have decided not to make any scans I have done myself available to anyone that is not working directly in the preservation field, but feel free to contact me if you have an educational or study use, or anything else that would fall under fair usage laws. Harmy has access to the same resources that I do, and I am sure he will continue to do great work with them.

I will continue my own preservation work and rebuild my gear, and will probably setup a simple preservation website or join an existing one soon, so I am not becoming a hermit or anything, but won’t be spnding as much time online.

A big thanks to everyone on the OT forums, I have had a great time and learned so much from everyone here, and to everyone that helped me out with HDDs and resources, you will not be forgotten, I’ll keep you all in the loop as my work progresses.

This wasn’t an easy decision, I do spend an inordinate amount of time in these forums, but life has also been getting increasingly difficult, my main employer hit hard times and has let most staff go, including me, and as many of you know, one of my four daughters is physically and mentally disabled, and as she hits puberty, she has become far more difficult to look after, imagine someone who is mentally an 18 month old, that is 5 foot tall, and incredibly strong, that is simultaneously going through the both the tantrum phase of ‘the terrible twos’ and the throws of hormones and mood swings of a teenager, coupled with random violent outbursts, and you can see how it puts a lot of stress on the family, especially when you also have a three year old daughter, safety is also a real concern.

So I have decided that I probably should spend more time on family stuff, and less time online, so this seems as good a time as any to start doing exactly that.

Thanks again to everyone here that has enriched my knowledge and life in so many ways, it has been a joy and priveledge to call you my friends, even though I never met a single one of you in the real world 😃

Cheers, and goodbye

-Peter
