Harmy's RETURN OF THE JEDI Despecialized Edition HD - V3.1 — Page 105

Video will be slightly higher (slightly higher bitrate), but the biggest difference is audio - the MKV includes higher quality main soundtrack (lossless, I believe - at least in the cases of SW and ESB) and several more tracks for different languages.

I noticed a bit of an anomaly (it may have been in the original version and I just didn’t notice it) at 00:02:58 to 00:03:06 you can see white Storm Troopers(?) walking across the Death Star (I assume they’re building it). There is a light box around them until they stop walking at 00:03:06. I don’t recall if this was in the original version or not and if so I just didn’t notice it before. I realize it’s a little late to be pointing this out so I’m going to assume it’s supposed to be there.

If it’s what I’m thinking it is, that’s a matte line. It was in the original, removed from the Special Editions (because it was unintentional but largely unavoidable in the original), and restored for the Despecialized Edition.

Actually it’s a matte box and the shot is unchanged from the BD, where it was in turn unchanged from the original version (as evidenced by the presence of matte boxes).

But I’ve never actually noticed those little guys before. Cool little detail!

Well, there you go. Thanks Harmy!

So not REALLY worth the investment in a Blu-Ray burner then? Sound isn’t amassive issue to me as I only play through a sound bar or TV Speakers anyway.

I work in a theatre and got some friends together to watch SW 2.5 AVCHD on the BIG screen. I couldn’t A-B it with the MKV, but I seriously had ZERO complaints. Not sure if it’s worth the investment. Unless you want the extra gigs to be able to have a BR with a fancy menu and extras, etc…

uloz.to too slow

I downloaded the 22GB version in 4 hours from uloz.to, average 2MB/s is that slow?

Same here with Free Rapid Downloader, 10 concurrent downloads. My internet connection isn’t that great but I was satisfied. About the same amount of time it would take for a torrent of that size probably.

I have finished downloading (with JDownloader) the multipart RAR files for the AVCHD last night. Did Harmy reupload the RAR files yesterday? JDownloader has failed parts 14-17 so I pasted the links from tehParadox again, but I got a checksum error when extracting with WinRAR.

Now I’m downloading the whole thing again directly with Firefox. My internet connection is too slow with uloz.to (average 100 Kbps). Are there any public torrens avaiable?

Same thing happened to me. I got all but about 5 files and then had to grab new links. None of the Checksums match and I get error messages in WinRAR and 7zip. Technically it did extract and plays, but I’m not sure if it’s fully intact.

I burned my first Despecialized trilogy just over Thanksgiving off the AVCHD to DVD-DL and I have to say it is pretty amazing (especially when you buy the inkjet printable DVDs and a Pixma printer) which I did just for this project. So just after getting back from Walt Disney World where my kids got to meet Darth Vader, have a light saber battle with him, and I was chosen as the Rebel Spy in Star Tours…I just knew I needed to do this right. I picked up an external USB 3.0 Pioneer BD Burner off Amazon for not a lot, downloaded some freeware, bought some cool glossy liquid defense plus printable BD-Rs and will be testing the burning process from the MKVs very soon. I would go BD Burner - they are really not that expensive, and I can see the drive getting used in the future for other projects.

First of all, I only have registered for saying Thanks to Harmy and everyone else involved, amazing Work!!!

And since I’m from Spain, Thank you so mucho for including Castillian in your releases. It’s so much pleasure to see these movies so beautiful and in the language I have always watched them!!!

Secondly, I would like to make my little contribution to two discussions:

In this, reviewing that shot in question, I believe that the “light box” is actually the sparks from a welder, or at least that is what it seems to me. I also never noticed those two workers there, amazing how a movie like this can bring something entirely new in only one more watch.

Also, for those looking for a theatrical version of Lapti Nek and Yub Nub, I would like you to take a look at this site:

http://www.dorisergioslibrary.com/bso-star-wars/

In there, there is some “complete soundtracks” for each of the six movies, fanmade (i think), but of great quality. In the Return of the jedi one, in particular, the versions of Lapti Nek and Yub Nub are very close to what sounds in the movie.

Check them out and share your thoughts.

This sounds amazeballs to me. I really wish I could have that experience. Is it as simple as just hooking up a player to the projector there?

Nah. I’ll stick with the AVCDH copies I have then.

This is excellent! The shifts from Bluray to 35mm footage is smoother than in the workprint and the previously blurry shots from the Bluray now look fantastic.

Just wondering, is the 2.0 isolated score the exact theatrical score? If so, does this mean that we now have the theatrical versions of Lapti Nek and Yub Nub?

Awesome!

Harmy, what clued you in about the giant door shot being a recomp in 2004 (perhaps even 1997)? Looks pretty close to the original to me.

The 2011 change is one of the most mysterious. Perhaps there really was a reason that this shot in particular was changed? Like they had to recreate it in 2004 anyway, so they had the digital assets to just go around messing with it further? It’s always interesting seeing Mike Verta’s videos and learning that it’s quite likely that some of Lucas’s changes are due to o-neg damage rather than creative vision.

Edit: I wonder if some of your rancor shots in the gallery are 2.0 and not 2.5. The last few seem very dark compared to the adjustments you made for 2.5.

Haha, that’s actually why I was asking. They look like the elements are in the same positions. But maybe my eye isn’t good enough to tell the difference.

Did you look at the full res version? It’s not just the picture from the comparison gallery - I highlighted the difference.

Oh, I see! Thought perhaps the 2004(97?) was just color matched differently, but it does look like a recomp. And in 2011, I’ll bet the main goal was to completely remove that seam, and of course George was just like, ‘well why not make the damn thing 10x bigger as well’.

10x bigger on the outside. Not the inside. Apparently Special Edition Jabba’s palace is the exact opposite of the TARDIS, in that it is smaller on the inside than on the outside.

It’s a live performance theatre. A bit more set up than that, but worth it in the end… https://goo.gl/photos/mwDwXwHU2az8sFbq7

Hmm… I notice that the 2.5 burned subtitles look… chunkier than the 1.0 do.

I guess I just got used to the 1.0 subtitles being cleaner. 😛

Well, the 1.0 looked more like something you’d make digitally, like the prequel subs. 2.5 looks more like the SW Greedo subs, and were apparently derived from the 35mm film.

This is the movie I saw in 1983, I was 7. Excellent work, Harmy! Thank you!!!
Whatched it 3 times now on a projector… feels like it should be seen in the cinema. Great attention to detail… the ships even disappear in the right spots, haha!
