I second a fully restored 81 crawl even as an extra. I’ve played around with the one from their recent release, but once you get the star field to a good brightness, everything else is blown out. I don’t think it can be saved unless working from original, uncorrected scans.

Hay there. Long time no post. Just wondering how close to completion the
T-1 trilogy is?
I had really hoped that by now the internet speeds in my area would have gotten better.
But sadly I am still stuck with 1.77 mbps at best. That being the case what are the chances of getting some HD MP4s? And can MP4s have 5.1?
We don’t have any completion dates for these projects.
All the time spent on working on them is done by volunteers during their spare time.
Most of our team is on break currently after having finished off the first part of our Star Wars project.
It might be better to ask if there are some forum members that can burn or download the movies for you,
Possibly just for postage. There should never be a charge for them.

4K is also pretty pointless for a scan of a 35mm exhibition print - it’s definitely useful to have the scan at 4K, because of cropping and such and a 4K scan will be more detailed when scaled down to 2K than a straight 2K scan but for the final product, 4K would make practically zero difference - there could be a huge difference in detail if working with the o-neg or even an IP but not from a print - I experimented with this.

I guess that damages to the film might be easier to erase when having a larger format to scale down to 1080p.

Actually, yes. The added grain from the print would be much finer and less noticeable, so what you would see on a 70mm print is much closer to the original negative than what you would see on a 35mm print in terms of detail and resolution.

That’s what people were saying 5 years ago about the Technicolor prints.
Interesting! I knew there would be exhibition grain on top of negative grain but I hadn’t considered how much more fine it would be.
The 70mm picture quality could potentially be quite nice, though with an aspect ratio of 2.2:1, some image would be missing from the sides.
The soundtrack is quite the most desirable aspect of it, of course. I know there is at least one privately owned 70mm print of the first movie out there, but nobody seems to know who actually owns it. Most likely this person would be unwilling to loan it out for scanning. I’ve never heard anything about whether there are any existing copies of the other two.
70mm blow-up prints are cropped on the sides to achieve the full 70mm 2.2:1 aspect ratio. Plus they’ve all probably faded to red by now.
But getting their soundtracks would be godly. We’d finally have the authentic original surround sound mix.

Having the OTV plus the all three original sound mixes would make for the ultimate release even if in the end the video were sourced from a 35, the mono audio from a videotape, the stereo from a laserdisc…

Regardless of audio, when this Tech/Eastman version is cleaned up and ready I think it will be my preferred way to watch Star Wars.

Unless TN1 has some great insider secrets, not a single person on this forum (or indeed, apparently, the internet) has gotten homebrew blu-ray seamless branching to work, despite many efforts. If you want to read about it I can try to find the threads and PM you, since it will take us far off topic here for the sake of discussing (so far) completely fruitless efforts.
But yes, it would be fantastic if it would work.

- Yes, I know the audio needs some tweaking to make it more seamless - the volume of the 81 is higher than the 77 and remainder of the film, and there is a brief moment of silence between the 77 opening and the main film. Both of these are issues with the audio tracks and will be fixed. The important thing is that the video transition IS seamless and those of you who care to reverse engineer it will see that the seamless branching flags are set.
- Also this is NOT an indicator of the final Blu-ray quality / menus / layout / or contents!!! The menu and buttons were created purely for this test because we had to have some way to choose which version to play.
- The video and audio tracks were both re-encoded from the content already distributed - not from the masters - so please don’t whine on about how the quality hasn’t improved at all or the encoding settings need more tweaking. (The audio for the 81 crawl was taken from the X0 project files distributed by Zion)

Haven’t watched the previews, but will later today. If there’s no hiccup in the video at the branch point, then I am indeed very impressed! I very much hope that the blu-ray release will include branching crawl options. It would be the first of its kind in that regard.

Yes, it would be rather silly to use different audio for the '81 crawl in a seamless branching mode. Prints that had the newer crawl spliced on still used the same original Dolby Stereo audio track for the whole movie.
