'Kiki's Delivery Service' - DJMasturbeats version (1998 Disney English dub) (Released)

So, I recently bought the Studio Ghibli Blu-Ray set on amazon only to realize that 2010 DVD/Blu-Ray release changed a bit of the dubbing from the original 1998 VHS and 2003 DVD release. In the original dub, they added some music, replaced some songs, and added some dialog where there was some. The 2010+ release cut back a lot of that including one line of dialog that changed the tone of the ending of the movie. I personally liked the 1998 dub better, and it also holds more nostalgic value for me.

I looked online and while I found one link of someone that looked like they’d made a 1080p cut of it here: https://djmasturbeat.wordpress.com/2013/03/03/kikis-delivery-service-1989-avc-1080p-bd50-custom-streamlinejal-dub-multi-dubs-and-multi-fansubs/

There is no donwload link, or any idea of where to get it. I tried googling for a few days, and finally took my Blu-Ray and DVD copies and tried to splice them, but the timing slowly unsyncs over the course of the movie. I tried doing the best I could with Audacity trying to fix the timing by comparing timing side by side, but the work I did produced sub par results at best.

Is there somewhere I am missing that has a copy of the 1998 English Disney dub of this? Thanks in advance.

Mod Edit: please read through the thread - and note this post by Charles Threepio - for info on an available release of Kiki’s Delivery Service.

I’ve got a Japanese ISO at hand with what I believe is the 1998 dub (it has the replacement songs for example), but I’d also have to synch up the audio, as that is all I have… (besides, at least, the 1987 dub. Ironically, I’m looking for the remixed Disney dub.)

Which dub are you looking for? There are a few:

Original Japanse dub
Steamline English dub
Disney 1998 dub
Disney 2010 dub

The streamline one can be found with the tag [REVO] online, the Disney 1998 dub is found on the first DVD release in the US (2003) and the VHS release (1998). The Disney 2010 dub is found on anything newer than that. The original Japanese dub can be found on any DVD or Blu-Ray release.

I am personally looking for a copy of the 1998 dub, but with the Blu-Ray quality.

Nod. I haven’t been actively looking for anything, but I have everything but the 2010 version. (Not important enough to dig stuff up.)

What I have for the 1998 is a 384 kbps AC3 from a dvdiso. Not sure if better exists.

Yeah, basically, I just want a combination of the audio DVD and the visuals Blu-Ray I own.

Hi. i was wondering do you have that crappy dub from a Dvdiso. i might be able to split the audio and sync it to the 2010 Dub i have. they are the same besides a few of the lines, so syncing shouldnt take long.

It’s just the audio so I doubt it’ll matter, and I can’t say how long I can keep the file up but there’s no reason for me to delete it anytime soon…

What exactly is the difference. I think I have the DVD and I have the blu-ray.

I think they reverted the song and BGM changes and removed some of Phil Hartman’s lines?

Hmm. I have the Japanese DVD (from 2002 or 2003 I think). It has the English (Disney) and Japanese dubs. I’m assuming it’s the same as the ISO Molly has? I didn’t know they remixed the English dub later.

Is it 5.1?

According to my software, it’s 2.0.

At 384kbps I’d be shocked if it wasn’t.

The Japanese DVD of Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind had a 384kbps track but it was only 2.0 dual mono.

And I’ve loved every pixel of it.

Yep, as Molly pointed out, I was wrong. That’s a pretty healthy bitrate for stereo.

Also looking for the 1998 dub in Bluray quality.

I have the 384kbps stereo AC3 if that’s good enough for you. Shoot me a PM if you want it.

JEDIT: Actually the link Molly shared still seems to work, and that’s the same copy I have, so you can just download that.

I wonder if there has been people interested on making scans of theatrical prints of Ghibli movies.

That’d be neat, though I think the Blu-Ray releases are pretty good (the ones I’ve got anyway).

Well, I have read some discussions, and it seems they started degraining their releases after the first JP bluray of Nausicaä. There are some online pics of the original JP bluray of Nausicaä, and in those pics you can see that, despite the faded colors (although most of the red comes from the different color temperature they use in Japan), it is quite grainy (as it should be), whereas the second JP bluray of Nausicaä is much colder and the grain structure is not well defined.

There may be some additional problems I’m unaware of, though.

I would donate to fan projects involving scanning original japanese prints. It would be interesting to see how it looked back then in theaters.

The new GKids releases don’t seem degrained to me. I’ve got their releases of Castle in the Sky, Nausicaa, and Spirited Away. They also have proper English subs instead of dubtitles.

Sidenote: Love the option on Castle in the Sky for the new English dub with the original synth music, but I wish it was a lossless track like the dub with the new orchestral music…

I was unaware there were newer releases. I have been checking forum.blu-ray.com and there doesn’t seem to be an up-to-date comparison thread for all BD releases of Ghibli. So I’m not sure how well these releases you have mentioned are compared with the older ones.

I wonder how good are the japanese-only MGVC releases. Oh well, at this point I think it’s better to wait for 4K releases.
