We’ll start a new thread for the Eastman vs Technicolor version when we are ready to discuss more about it.

Team Negative1

Right - we have to finish the LPP first!

Edit: But I will add one more teaser, just for the OT crowd.

This video was produced using this technique (plus a little post processing to clean it up a little more), and it only took about a week… It has not been color corrected.

This is absolutely awesome! A huge quality jump compared to v1!

TN1 have outdone themselves already! This may prove to be one of the best transfers of the film yet!

Ok, this just got me excited, and I was already pleased with the first release. Looks great!

The Eastman vs Technicolor sample as well as the Silver Screen Edition seem to have quite noticeable light streaking/banding on the whole far right side of the frame.

It this present on the film as well or does this get introduced during the scanning process?

I think the sample given was the entire scanned frame so you see the junk on the edge that normally gets cropped.

would have to be cropped quite dramatically then and it’s also visible on the Silver Screen Edition

Is anyone working on syncing the surround audios to this release?

It’s probably better to wait for the next release, when we know for sure which frames have been recovered. I know that people have synced up some audio tracks already, but as the next release will almost certainly be different in terms of frame count. the sync will have be re-done anyway.

Looking at that latest preview…

“Impressive. Most impressive.”

Maybe a despecialization would be irrelevant if we had the whole film like that.

Only to a degree. There’s still more information in some shots on the Blu Ray due to it being sourced from the negative.

More information = facial pores, really. Maybe some edges are softer, but otherwise it’s just pores for days.

For me seeing the facial pores and textures has always been the most important and impressive things about HD.
When I get a movie and am trying to assess the quality/resolution, I always look for a medium close-up shot and look at how well-defined the skin-pores are.

That’s how I chose my second wife. My first was only in SD.

Hmm. “Asses” seems a strangely appropriate typo… we know the movies you watch, Harmy…

SD wives are so low rez.

Did we see pores in the cinema? I don’t think we were meant to see pores. Pores are so digital.

Oh, that level of definition is great. I just wanted to stress that the drop in detail from negative–>theatre print isn’t nearly as great as Blu Ray–>DVD.

Very few people saw the Technicolor print in the theater.

And it never looked as clear as the detail in the bluray is.
Any comparisons or people claiming it did, don’t remember in actuality what it looked like then.

35 years ago the color were different on the two prints probably but not necessarily better than the other. It’s just today the Eastman prints have faded where as the Technicolor prints have not. Technicolor had it’s own issues and especially Star Wars prints since they were at the end of the Technicolor processing line.

I stumbled across this image in some article and it shows nicely how much more real the '97 CGI looks with some generational loss and 35mm colors. I think if TN1 do a 35mm transfer of the '97SE, like they said they eventually would, it could be a great resource for anyone wanting to do any kind of semi-specialized edition.

First of all that shot is gorgeous! As someone who enjoys the OOT & 97SE equally, anything after 97 is trash 😛, I eagerly and patiently wait for all of TN1’s OOT & 97SE projects!

I have yet to see more than a few pieces of the LPP version, but holy crappe, that Technicolor preview looks amazing. If the whole movie was available in that quality, I would watch the hell out of that!

Very interesting to see how closely it matches the colors of Despecialized 2.5, as well. The inconsistencies from shot to shot are in exactly the same places: sometimes the Death Star interior is blue-green, sometimes straight-up blue, sometimes a bit purple-ish, sometimes even light grey. Every time it changes it’s in exactly the same way as Harmy’s version, and it looks a bit green-tinted more often than not. Clearly that is just the way those prints looked—I think it would be doing them a disservice to ‘correct’ those inconsistencies or biases out of it. So what if it’s a bit green? I think it flatters the overall cinematography quite nicely.

I really like seeing the grain levels go up on the opticals, also: it reminds me I’m looking at the real thing and not an overly-scrubbed version.

Yes, as poita has said, the SW technicolor prints were not really up to standard, with a lot of shots turning out too green.
