do bathrooms/toilets exist in the SWU? discuss

The first time I saw Star Wars, one of the many things I came away from it with was “where were the bathrooms”? This is akin to various “food in the OT” comments, but, you know, the opposite.

Seriously, where are the bathrooms.

O_O ?

They’re right next to Turboshaft 2.

“That Darth Vader, man. Sure does love eating Jedi.”

No, there’re no bathrooms in the SW Universe. Everyone excretes through their skin.

I don’t think any of the 7 films has a single depiction of or allusion to a bathroom or toilet of any kind. Guys, this is weird.

I half think that they should just finally and casually add them in without fanfare, just to complete things, but then also half think they should make it really weird, some other imaginative alternate reality waste management system.

But it would be really funny if they did something like the skin thing. Like all this time we just assumed people like Finn and Luke and Rey were humans, but in episode VIII it is revealed they actually have their genitals in their armpits or something.

Also, an even broader question is multi-species toilets. Sometimes there are probably a dozen or more species in one place, like at Maz’s house or at the Mos Eisley cantina. What would THOSE bathrooms look like?!

Mad Magazine answered that question back in the day. 😉

Star Trek hasn’t been much different in the lack of bathrooms. Bablyon 5 went out of their way to show a men’s room, IIRC.

In the EU, bathrooms are called refreshers or something.

On my second or third viewing of Star Wars, I did begin to wonder where the bathrooms were on the Death Star, and how Stormtroopers relieve themselves.

The original Dark Forces game had an answer though.

Sums up my own experience with most video games*.

One day we will have properly restored versions of the Original Unaltered Trilogy (OUT); or 1977, 1980, 1983 Theatrical released versions (Like 4K77,4K80 and 4K83); including Prequels. So that future generations can enjoy these historic films that changed cinema forever.

“SANITATION?!”

Also, was it just garbage in the trash compactor?

If your crop is water, what, exactly, would you dust your crops with?

It’s true. I had a friend with a little mini trash compactor in his kitchen, and I can’t tell you how many times I found him in there using it.

Of course bathrooms exist in SWU. Where do you think Obi-Wan was hiding when Padmé was travelling to Mustafar?

No wonder he used The Force to close the door.

A) “Sanitation”

B) Seriously, most films ignore this. It would be a pointless use of screen time.

So you’re saying that’s not how films work?

Most films have a bathroom in evidence somewhere in the background, or feature someone leaving or entering one, or mentioning it, or something. Good god, I’m not suggesting a Star Wars bathroom scene, lol PLEASE NO. I’m just saying there is an outrageously conspicuous absence in over SEVEN MOVIES (over meaning if you count the animated material) of any kind of presence of or reference to, or even the slightest evidence, even in passing, of a restroom, or for that matter a bathing facility.

I know I said that I noticed it in the first movie, but I think the “no restrooms” tone was clear enough that I could see it was a genuine loophole, and six subsequent films bore out that intuition.

Mark Hamill claims to have dared ask, “Pardon me George, but is that Dia Noga poo poo?” and Lucas pushed him into the muck.

I think it could be possible that these elements are deliberately blacklisted too, as a device for subconsciously creating a mythic atmosphere. Legends don’t talk about restrooms or toilets on Mount Olympus, for instance.

If this hypothesis is true, that device would only work for one or two films; at most a trilogy, because in the course of detailed full-universe exposure over time, it becomes extremely conspicuous. Children’s cartoons might be able to get away with it, like there probably were no bathrooms in Voltron either, but adult cinema, scifi or no, is a different matter.
