You’ve completely mixed up CRF with QP encoding which is what you are describing. Two different x264 settings can drastically change output bit rate of two same CRF encodes. Also, what the hell does MPEG2 or MVC have to do with x264 encoding? You’re still reaching instead of providing actual information rather than anecdotes.

The settings used on the current 1080p essentially neuter the release. Even scene groups are required to use better quality presets these days. The motion estimation settings alone cause a huge amount of grain shift from frame to frame. There is so much more to x264 encoding than CRF values and bit rate. I already contacted TM-1 with baseline settings that would dramatically improve their video quality. I just hope they use them.

Edit: and don’t use --tune grain!! That preset is almost as old as x264 itself. It uses far too high values of --psy-rd and will introduce artifacting and increase bit rate requirements. It’s more of an artificial sharpening mechanism than anything else.

It sounds like they’re more willing to do some trial renders if they’re willing to give a 50gb aimed bitrate a test. And fortunately they’ll let us see the result. So hopefully they’ll test your settings as well. And hopefully they’ll adopt the moniker you’ve suggested of Team Megative 1.

For what it’s worth, I’ve seen Chouonsoku’s samples/proof in motion and would trust what he says. If Team Negative1 wants the best possible 1080p encode, they should at least be willing to listen to him. Not that anyone else doesn’t know what they’re talking about, but samples/proof are better than words

If Chouonsoku is the same person I’m thinking of from a very quality oriented encoding site, then I’d also suggest paying extra consideration to what he (she?) has to say.

Edit: Chouonsoku has since added a profile pic, definitely the same person I’m thinking of.

I think I’ve heard some of the DragonTeam people speak highly of him, so yeah.

(I’m usually considered a mediocre encoder, but encode and time for DragonTeam because I can have a better raw than SOFCJ, plus chapters and timed captions, before anyone else gets up most weeks. I have a few different handles around the 'net.)

Are there subtitles planned for the BD ISO?

Ol’ George has the GOUT, I see.

Don’t worry, we are listening. Like you, we want this to look as good as it possibly can, and we’re not going to let our own egos get in the way of that 😃

To answer some question, since the Bluray will take some time, we will be putting out a 1.1 MKV version.
This will only fix a few issues (the rest will be fixed later).

  • volume to introduction will be lowered
  • color correction to scene
  • fix framerate for container

And possibly any other minor errors.

We’ll see about encoding tweaks for this.

Sound, subtitles and other issues will have to be addressed later.

So, we should not expect GOUT sync for the 1.1 MKV? Are at least the found 85 frames of the missing 111 frames going to be inserted?

At the end of the training remote session with Luke talking to Ben, what are the green ovals in the top right with white scribbled lines for?, in the last sentance or so before you cut to the Death Star board room

I think those are just reel change markers. It’s something we no longer see in digital projection, or on home video, but would definitely be present in 1977. See https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cue_mark for more info.

Hope that helps. 😃

Finished downloading today, got to take a look at it. Wow. For someone who wasn’t fortunate enough to have been alive when this came out in theatres, this was an incredible experience. I am so pleased this exists. The biggest thank you to everyone involved at Team -1 for restoring a treasure of our history and pop culture.

I am so excited for the blu ray release. One question, and please forgive me if this has already been answered: Will you be including blu ray cover and disc artwork in the release? I can’t wait to make this up and make it look as great as it can on my shelf.

It’s definitely a reel change. I’m not sure why they sometimes appear to be handmade scribbles, such as that, rather than a clean oval.

Also, if anyone needs an invite to myspleen, send me a PM, I have 10 invites apparently.

My guess would be that the original reel-change marks were on the damaged missing frames, so someone made new ones.

Actually I have never used the team account.

I’m going to need to see a notarized document signed by all team members in order to verify.

As a projectionist, if you end up having to splice the film near the reel end and the result means the frame with the cue-dot on it is now missing, you have to put ‘something’ there as a marker for the next projection of the film so that you know when to switch projectors to the next reel.
Some guys used a hole punch, some would do a scribble or some kind of mark to replace the missing one.

I haven’t seen the scribble mentioned here specifically, but it is possibly the reason it is there.
