I don’t mind grain, but is it really supposed to be as grainy as it is in some shots? I ask this because Mike Verta’s version of this shot doesn’t look nearly as grainy: https://vimeo.com/120218626

Either way, thanks so much to Team Negative 1 for all your hard work.

My guess would be that yes it is, for this print. Is Mike Verta’s print a LPP print? If not then you’re not comparing like for like. From what I gather LPP prints tend to be more grainy compared to standard Kodak Eastman film stock although I could be wrong.

Mike Verta has 2 IB techs and 3 Eastman LPPs I believe.

Plus, we haven’t seen any of Mike’s final output. The videos on vimeo are degrained, but he has said he is adding back grain as well. TN1’s of course has varying level of grain for effect shots, etc, and then an extra bit of grain due to it being a dupe. So, different goals and approaches indeed. And I’ll suggest something else that’s extremely controversial: different folks have different preferences with regards to grain and it’s perfectly fine so long as no one’s bitching about it, demanding to have someone else change things for them. 😃

I think Mike Verta is using grain reduction in that video. He showed in some video that he was combining prints together to achieve this. For instance if you have a static shot of something that is really grainy and combine multiple frames over time together aka blending you will take the grain out of the shot completely. This effect essentially negates the grain.

I like the Blade Runner comparison Harmy made. I like that Bluray set. I’ve seen so many versions of that film over the years that no one version is the correct one in my mind. (I don’t like to think of Harrison Ford as a replicant though.) So I like watching the official Blurays and then Harmy’s and now this. I think a “perfect version” will be something middle of the road. Harmy had a nice example above. I think reducing the grain and punching up the image a touch will be nice.

Disney should just take all the different versions online and sell a Bluray set with Fox and get everyone to chip in for extras.

I’m looking forward to 70mm Rogue One!

Well, I did a little experiment applying a bit of denoising and making the colors more saturated and “technicolorized”:
http://screenshotcomparison.com/comparison/158521

It’s just a fun experiment though - I love how grainy it is, because it represents what the print would look like in a cinema and the colors do need a bit more attention, which I think they’re gonna get for the BD25 release, but not necessarily in this direction.

wow, that looks very promising…

If someone wants to post images of the missing frames using the GOUT as a source, I’ll see if I have those frames on film anywhere. Probably don’t, but I will check.

The list below should be right. The frame-numbers are based on the GOUT after it has been demuxed with PGCDemux and run through DGIndex with forced film selected (in other words, post-IVTC). Althor, would you mind checking them?

42593-604 (inclusive)
45153-45156 (inclusive)
55746-50 (inclusive)
56085
56926
58476-79 (inclusive)
60759
64864
70506-7
78664
83448-51 (inclusive)
86658-715 (inclusive)
113650-5 (inclusive)
144051-5 (inclusive)

If these frame numbers are accurate, I can locate and upload the raw, uncleaned frames - all you’ll need to do is use Dre’s Tool to color match them, then crop & resize to match the surrounding frames and then pop them in where they belong… Actually, that sounds like quite a lot of work, but I’m happy to dig out the missing frames for you. The ones at the reel changes are not coming back, they were removed when the print was plattered too many times, but there are no missing frames between the reel changes. I can only assume we lost a few during imports and exports to different software - somewhere in the pipeline the framerate must have been changed from 23.976 to 24 and back. This may account for the smearing too, or that may be on the print also. If you can provide frame numbers I can check on that too…

Re the smearing that has been mentioned, I grabbed a frame from the same Spanish LPP, assuming that -1 used the LPP for this shot (they may have used another source), here is a comparison:

http://screenshotcomparison.com/comparison/158526

So it looks like the smearing is not in the Spanish LPP, whether it is a scanning artefact, or a processing/compression issue, I can’t say, and of course, they may have sourced those scenes from a different print that has the issue.

In a hundred years at the current rate, but any news will be in my own thread so as not to clog it up here with everyone else’s projects.
The image I posted isn’t from my project, it was just a quick grab of the scan to check. I probably won’t be using the LPP for much, I’m on a different path, people asked about the smearing though, and as I was lucky enough to be given access to the print, so I was able to check.

I’m noticing that lights and reflections are “streaked,” like it was a slow exposure and their luminescence is trailing off a little. It’s especially noticeable when Artoo and Threepio are in the sandcrawler. Is this the result of overexposure in the scan or is it native to the print or negative?

EDIT: Here’s an example of what I’m talking about.

http://i.imgur.com/93i2t0z.png

Do you mean this:

with the smearing coming of Threepio and the lights

and this with the Jawas?

It might be something that happened in the compression phase perhaps?

Looks like the smearing happened during our scanning process. Here is one of the original frames (EXR format).

http://www.thestarwarstrilogy.com/starwars/file.axd?file=/2016/01/StarWars.Frame.00022792.zip

As you increase the gamma / brightness the smearing becomes more apparent…

It does look like a light leak. Good to know it isn’t in the print. Thanks for posting the raw image, it really shows how much work you guys did, I don’t think everyone realises just how ‘raw’ the raw scans come in from 30+ year old film, and how much work is required to get them looking good again.

I just viewed traces of the film today for the first time. My initial thought was it looks dull and grainy. I have a 21" HD monitor and grain looked super magnified especially in sunlight scenes.

As soon as I took the HD cable from the back of the monitor and plugged it into my 40" HDTV, OMG it looked incredible. I really need to try watching this on my projection screen downstairs! So much better looking on a bigger TV.

Author

Also, your monitor is likely setup with a different colour-space/calibration to a television.
It will look very different on a TV compared to an uncalibrated computer monitor.

However, if people are lashing out at you, it’s more because of your tone which, while I understand you had the best intentions, did come out sounding a little condescending. People have their reasons for not creating a public torrent and instead of saying: “Hey guys, I’m just curious why you don’t just distribute this by torrent. Is there some reason why?” You went for a more agressive tone (“this crap is useless, my way is so much better!”)

Um, no. Not even close. Initially I basically just said the first and never said anything close to the second. I didn’t start getting “condescending” or “aggressive” until it was done to me first. All I did was lay my case out for why I think public trackers are a more accessible way to release a project that’s creators clearly stated they wanted to spread to the public, and then ask why they chose a less accessible way. If that makes me an asshole, so be it. I sure don’t think so. In my very first post I even apologized and said I hated to complain, I really was reluctant to too, and I put it as gently as possible.

Again, I appreciate the work. I just don’t know why we’re going through archaic channels like usenet, private trackers, and .rar when all that does is limit the number of people who have access to it. The only conclusion I could reach, and this has simply been bolstered by the response I was met with here, is a certain sense of elitism and desire for exclusivity among this community, if I may be so bold. You wouldn’t even have to just release it on a public tracker, just release it at the same time as usenet/whatever.

Some of you may get this reference, and if you don’t, just ignore it.

From the Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy:

Arthur is discussing why he didn’t see the plans for demolition of his house:

MISTER PROSSER:
But Mister Dent the plans have been available in the planning office for the last nine months!

ARTHUR DENT:
Yes! I went round to find them yesterday afternoon. You’d hadn’t exactly gone out of your way to pull much attention to them have you? I mean, like actually telling anybody or anything.

MISTER PROSSER:
The plans were on display.

ARTHUR DENT:
Ah! And how many members of the public are in the habit of casually dropping around the local planning office of an evening?

MISTER PROSSER:
Er - ah!

ARTHUR DENT:
It’s not exactly a noted social venue is it? And even if you had popped in on the off chance that some raving bureaucrat wanted to knock your house down, the plans weren’t immediately obvious to the eye were they?

MISTER PROSSER:
That depends where you were looking.

ARTHUR DENT:
I eventually had to go down to the cellar!

MISTER PROSSER:
That’s the display department.

ARTHUR DENT:
With a torch!

MISTER PROSSER:
The lights, had… probably gone.

ARTHUR DENT:
So had the stairs!

MISTER PROSSER:
Well you found the notice didn’t you?

ARTHUR DENT:
Yes. It was on display in the bottom of a locked filing cabinet, stuck in a disused lavatory with a sign on the door saying “Beware of the Leopard”. Ever thought of going into advertising?

Congratulations to those of you who found the plans!

I just wanted to add my Thanks and appreciation for this! I have been following a few of the projects on here for a while now since discovering their existence (mainly Harmy’s despecialized editions).

The download just finished and I cant wait to watch this and appreciate the film in a format as close as possible to its original release.

Thanks again for all your hard work and effort, it truly is appreciated by many!

Long time watcher. Huge fan of this effort as well as Harmy’s Despecialized editons. I was so excited to watch this version of Star Wars and it did not disappoint.

It was a treat. There’s moments I forgot from the film and matte line elements that popped up reminding me of the hard work special effects artists did to rush this movie into theaters in 1977. Their work was not erased thanks to this effort!

And I was surprised how much detail still existed here from a multi generation print (from the ocn). I expected soft and a fair amount of grain but some of the ship shots looked indistinguishable from the blu-ray.

I cannot believe the work everyone has gone through to restore the original Star Wars. Congratulations! You’ve outdone the GOUT and made this the next go to reference for preservation projects. Congratulations! And thank you so much!

So is the light smearing something that can be fixed by manipulating the contrast, or is it just a part of this preservation for the forseeable future?
