I guess as an engineer I have to admit that no system is 100% reliable. The lightsabre could be missed. And let’s assume the big main shaft had no purpose (such as city stabilisation, etc.) and at the bottom there was simply an empty floor.

Okay then, let’s go to the point. The lightsabre ending up in Rey’s hand at exactly that particular moment is not only practically impossible but also stupid and unoriginal from the story perspective. It is about hundred times more stupid than any OT-connecting point in PT. All we need now is Rey being Skywalker/Solo and the PT will look like masterpiece.
