Star Wars Episode II: The Approaching Storm (Released) — Page 9

Hi there, and welcome. V4 for Episodes 2 and 3 have been nearly finished for a while, and I’m just waiting on a few key resources. The biggest is Schorman’s V2 HDTV source material update, but I may forego this if I don’t hear anything after getting all the other bits and pieces ready; I’ve never noticed any issues at all with his V1 and am very happy with it. And they’ll have commentaries too.

My stance on revising fan edits.

I see, well no worry’s take your time. As i’v understand the best edits usually take quite a while to complete. Could you guys explain to me why the hate for Yoda’s lightsaber action and cutting his uses out? Since i haven’t heard your commentary about the chances you made i can’t seem to grasp it. Ep1 commentary explained everything very nicely, anything i may have had a grudge on. I was a somewhat casual SW fan so i’m not really aware what the hardcore fans think about certain things but since with the new release and fan edits inclusion i’v started to watch them more frequently. It’s been a long time but it’s nice to get back in to it…
PS: Sorry for any typos, English is not my mother tongue.

I never noticed any problems either. He mentioned there being lots of graphical glitches, though. And it sounded like a whole lot of work for him to go through and fix them frame by frame.

As for Yoda’s fighting: For many people who were fans for 22 years prior, seeing Yoda as a wise old sage, it was not fitting to see him flipping around doing acrobatics. I think people would have been happy to see him fighting with force powers. But it really doesn’t make sense to have him limping with a cane one second, and then capable of massive physical feats the next. The issue isn’t really that he drew a lightsaber, but that in order to make him able to fight a human sized foe, Lucas needed to have him jumping and such.

If Schorman’s versions aren’t ready, KK650’s are a nice alternative. They are sourced from the Blu-Ray, but with DVD-esque color. It means you get also get the benefit of extra moss in that one shot of the hut on Kashyyyk in Revenge of the Sith (such a big deal I know) and the theatrical wipe in ROTS as well.

Thanks for clearing that up, i’v thought about that myself how he’s limping with a cane, going all jump happy and then limping again… Oh Lucas why make things so complicated.

Well, this happens when pure creativity is not canalized and challenged by a gifted producer (Rick McCallum is not Gary Kurtz).

KK650’s versions are all very good. But he has a very unique take on color. I don’t think graphical glitches that so far only Schorman has noticed are reasons to not use his v1 releases. For II and III you really can’t beat the color of the DVD/HDTV releases.

Schorman is releasing a version of RoTS with the missing wipe as well.

I agree with towne32 about the colors; KK650’s version takes liberties with color, whereas Schorman’s is a better representation to how the films originally looked, which is what I’m going for. And I still hope that somewhere down the line I can do a special release using Emanswfan’s regrades.
Since V4 will be it, I’ve held off for Schorman’s V2, but might just use V1 if it ends up being the last thing I’m waiting on and he’s still away from the forum. I don’t know where it is patched or anything, but it looks beautiful to my eyes, especially AOTC. Far superior to the BluRay.

Will we ever see proper Blu-ray artwork?

Take your time, there is not rush if you can get higher video quality for your final version. I have rewatched a few scenes and I finally agree with the removal of the Dex scene, as well as the Geonosis droid factory action sequence. It’s really an improvement over the original material.

Just a question about the musical montage: you’ve got the fine idea to use McNeely’s SHADOWS OF THE EMPIRE soundtrack to give a very effective sound structure to the beginning of the podrace sequence. Have you ever thought about removing the inappropriate use of the Darth Vader theme at the end of AOTC with around 50 seconds of the “Imperical city” track (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UwPTbVMenRc#t=3m08s) ? This cue has a deep Roman Empire (Miklós Rózsa style) eerie feeling that could totally suit the strange and corrupted Republic Planet on the edge of chaos.

I’ve always enjoyed the ending music for AOTC, how the Clone theme gives way to the Imperial March as the obvious precursors to the upcoming Empire are taking off for war. The only thing I wish there was a seamless solution for with the score for AOTC is the initial reveal of the clones marching on Kamino. Someone had a mockup of that scene using the proper Clone theme rather than the leftover Trade Federation theme from TPM, but it was missing foley and wouldn’t have worked as is.

But, I wanted to let you all know that V4 should be coming very soon. Schorman’s V2 has been postponed, so I’m electing not to wait indefinitely for it. (I think V1 is gorgeous as it is.) I’m just waiting on a few things from the illustrious DrDre and the magnificent Emanswfan. Once I’ve heard back from the two of the, final preparations will be made for encoding the final release.

The interesting thing about The Trade Federation music during the Scene where Obi-Wan sees the clones on kamino, is that it was a new recording scored by John Williams specifically for the moment. I’ve heard the argument that the use of the theme is actually an intentional way of keying us into the fact that the clones and the droids are essentially two sides of the same coin, both ultimately puppet armies created by palpatine, and I quite like that reasoning.

I believe you, but do you have a source for this? It’s very interesting; with all the hacking and recycling that went on when doing the final score for AOTC, I’m surprised this wasn’t another bonkers editing choice.

Sure thing. http://www.jwfan.com/?p=3417
The cue is Clone Army Revealed (1:55), and on the soundtrack album it’s Track 9, from 1:28 to the end. If you A/B the two tracks you can tell it’s a new recording with slight differences. I was first clued into this by listening to a podcast called “Star Wars Oxygen”, which is a about the music of Star Wars and one of the hosts is David W. Collins who was a sound designer at LucasArts in the video game division.

Hal, I just had a dumb yet possibly okay-ish idea for V4! If I recall correctly, in your edit, you go from Anakin slaughtering sand people to Obi on Geonosis. You cut out Yoda sensing it and saying, “Young Skywalker is in great pain.” Which I totally get! It makes no sense to have that scene when neither Yoda or Mace ever attempt to confront Anakin about it. However, that short scene has that really cool Qui-Gon VO saying, “Anakin! Anakin!! NOOO!!!” I’ve always dug that and thought it was pretty powerful stuff. Have you ever tried putting that over the shots of Anakin killing the sand people? Does that make sense? Like, at the medium shot of Anakin, after the shot of him decapitating two sand people, you super impose the “Anakin! Anakin!!” Then, right at the final slice, as it transitions to the Obi scene, we hear the “NOOO!!!”
Hopefully it’ll work. [shrugs]

“This is an emotional moment. Anakin just killed some sand people.”
“You mean Arabs??”
“Nooo… No, you racist. No.”

I never was a fan of that little bit with Qui-Gon; it’s super obvious they didn’t have Liam Neeson involved. They use a repeat of “Anakin” twice, and some other voice yelling “Nooooo!”
Even so, moving up the yells would detract from the abbreviated slaughter scene, IMHO. I don’t feel the need to include the v/o, and it’d be awkward to implement.
So… nah. But thanks for the suggestion, worded amusingly as always.

I always thought this. Never liked it.

But it doesn’t sound like Hayden. It doesn’t sound like /anyone/ in the cast.

That fact that we’re having this discussion, about which /actor/ we each think that voice belongs to (given that it could be attributed to Qui-Gon but it’s not Liam’s voice) rather than anyone knowing for sure, shows that it’s not good.

I always thought that it was Cliegg Lars saying NOOO! He has the same husky voice.

It is an odd scene. I actually tried something different when I put together my own personal edit of the movie (a kind of mash-up of various edits I like). I kept the scene, but tried to replace the “NOOOOO!” with some Qui-Gon’s dialogue from the Clone Wars episode ‘Voices.’

It’s the scene where Yoda is in bacta tank and you hear Qui-Gon saying “No… This is not the way.” I placed this over the obnoxious “NOOO!” but I was not at all talented enough to make it work. All I was capable of was reducing the main audio and trying to insert the Clone Wars line, but the background music was just wrong. Plus, the calling out of Anakin’s name was a little too dramatic for the line that followed. I ended up scrapping it and keeping the line as it was but decided on cutting the scene on Mace Windu’s face as the Imperial March is in the background.

But I still I have a weird feeling that with a decent editor it could work. You get some authentic Liam Neeson… you get Qui-Gon seemingly expressing his disappointment in the path that Anakin is taking…

Hal, if you’re making changes for a newer version of your Ep II, can you please fix the this subtitle?

I’m really not a big fan of the way that G looks in the word “APPROACHING”.

Huh. Well… sure! I’ll see if I can’t find a more authentic font. “LABYRINTH OF EVIL” looks A-OK to me, so I won’t bother redoing that one.
And… wow… thanks for the catch on this one. This… this is what it’s all about.
