Edit: Also, to be fair, I think if say R2 did intentionally want the pod to land where it did, it was a smart move. If he had landed way too close to Obi-wan, then the Imperials would be RED hot on his trail. So instead, R2 made enough distance to get to Obi-Wan in a timely manner while also throwing off the Imperials temporarily.
