The ultimate nerd defense of anything is to say “it was in the script!”
Are we allowing the script defense for TFA as well?

My defense came out of the novel, not the script. Evidently your speed reading class did not serve you well!
- R2 and C3P0 happen to land somewhere conveniently on the side of the planet where Luke is
R2 piloted the escape pod to the location Leia told him to go. The escape pod was navigable, unlike the TIE fighter Poe and Finn were in in TFA
That was never established in the film. Nice rationalization though.
Sorry to come back to this point so late. Here it is, straight from the official 1976 novelization of the original script:
Artoo’s seemingly random manipulation of the pod controls promised anything but a smooth landing, however. Threepio regarded his squat companion with concern. “Are you sure you know how to pilot this thing?”
Original script or nay it matters not because the script has been revised and it mentions nothing about R2 piloting anything. I’m just going on what’s presented in the film and the official script.
INT. IMPERIAL STARDESTROYER On the main viewscreen, the lifepod carrying the two terrified robots speeds away from the stricken Rebel spacecraft. CHIEF PILOT There goes another one. CAPTAIN Hold your fire. There are no life forms. It must have been short- circuited. INT. LIFEPOD Artoo and Threepio look out at the receding Imperial starship. Stars circle as the pod rotates through the galaxy. THREEPIO That's funny, the damage doesn't look as bad from out here. Artoo beeps an assuring response. THREEPIO Are you sure this things safe?
This is not truly a topic of great concern in my view, but a thought did occur that perhaps R2 programmed the capsule prior to its departure? After all did he not appear to be in control of its launch, etc…?
I was once…but now I’m not… Further: zyzzogeton

That’s even less defensible. At least the script had some impact on what was shown on screen.
And again, are we allowing the novel for TFA into evidence?

The matter, as I said, is settled by the novel: R2 piloted the pod. There’s no debate remaining. Sure, folks here can argue, if they want to, but they can also argue that the sky is green.

That’s like saying the sky looks blue, but the Bible says it’s green so it must be green.
Again, the novel is even more removed from the movie than the script. And if you are allowing the novel to “settle the debate” then you need to go read the novel of TFA before you bitch about anything in the movie.

Absolutely! In fact, let’s admit some into evidence right now!
From the TFA novel:
“Kylo Ren, I watched the Galactic Empire rise, and then fall. The gullible prattle on about the triumph of truth and justice, of individualism and free will. As if such things were solid and real instead of simple subjective judgments. The historians have it all wrong. It was neither poor strategy nor arrogance that brought down the Empire. You know too well what did.”
Ren nodded once. “Sentiment.”
“Yes. Such a simple thing. Such a foolish error of judgment. A momentary lapse in an otherwise exemplary life. Had Lord Vader not succumbed to emotion at the crucial moment — had the father killed the son — the Empire would have prevailed. And there would be no threat of Skywalker’s return today.”
So there we have it. The “Snoke Lied to Ren About Darth Vader Turning Back to the Light” theory goes down the drain.
Using the novel as “evidence” is your gig, not mine. I just wanted to be sure you are consistent.
And have you read the entire novel? Are there any points in the novel that answer any of your complaints, or are you just cherry picking one?

My smart phone isn’t that smart. On a forum I don’t really try just to annoy grammar wolves like you!
Lol, never heard of grammar wolves before.

I believe the word you are looking for is ‘defence’…
The sky turning green is usually an indication of severe weather. Jest…
If the novels are to be the final word on anything, then Uncle Owen and Ben are related, as the ROTJ novelization says so. 😉
Where were you in '77?
In Heir To The Empire, Obi Wan appears to Luke for the last time with just such an explanation, having lingered too long already. Yoda and Anakin apparently never appeared to Luke again after the end of ROTJ.
But HTTE is shit as bad as TPM. Any explanation it gives on anything is automatically implausible and stupid because … because … ysalamiri.
I was simply pointing out that the idea Obi Wan can’t hang around forever to give Luke advice isn’t new.
By the way, I was being sarcastic. 😛

I think there’s logic in that because uncle Owen seems to know ob1 in anh.
Edit: Actually I just realised in attack of the crap isn’t Owen described as Anakin’s step brother!

I actually typed that by accident, and my Anerican browser corrected it.

I guess your browser uses simplified English instead of traditional.

Is that how Americans’ spell America?
Goddamn Anericans … ruining the Inglish language since 1776.
Stupid fat fingers.

You’re taking the NOVELIZATION of the ORIGINAL script while the OFFICIAL script makes no mention of R2 piloting anything…Shite evidence if you ask me but whatever. Also too bad nothing that’s shown on screen reflects anything you say but I’m used to that now

Why does the escape pod look like it’s in freefall? Also why did it crash in the middle of nowhere (albeit conveniently in walking/riding distance from both Luke and Ben) and not somewhere closer to Obi-Wan if R2 knew where he was?
In the novelization, it is explained that when R2 was first built, he was actually conceived as a pilot droid. Specifically, he was meant to pilot escape capsules in emergencies. However, as he was transferred from owner to owner, he gradually lost interest in piloting anything in lieu of his actual duties, and over time he in fact forgot how to do it. So when the opportunity finally came up over Tatooine, he wasn’t able to do a very good job.

“Artoo has been known to make mistakes… from time to time.”
Sorry, couldn’t resist 😛
Edit: Also, to be fair, I think if say R2 did intentionally want the pod to land where it did, it was a smart move. If he had landed way too close to Obi-wan, then the Imperials would be RED hot on his trail. So instead, R2 made enough distance to get to Obi-Wan in a timely manner while also throwing off the Imperials temporarily.
The Rise of Failures
I didn’t understand the part where a storm trooper finds a DROID part, I’m presuming it was meant to be off R2 or 3po but they were intact?
