Good question and a possible reason is that perhaps after 5 or so years Force Ghosts must leave this plane and move onto into the afterlife or “the netherworld of The Force” as Yoda called it in ROTS

This makes sense too. You’d think they couldn’t just appear forever and the length of time and who they are able to manifest themselves too might have some limitations.

For most of these situations there are many plausible explanations (see the lightsaber on Cloud City discussion),

Indeed. Because it is entirely plausible that Luke’s lightsaber fell down the main shaft at Bespin; got sucked into one of those, what, dozens of exhaust ducts; got caught up somehow, thereby preventing it from falling out and down to the fiery surface of the gas giant; was then found by someone or some thing in the duct (or wherever the duct may dump out or collect); recognized by that someone or some thing as something worth not throwing in the junk pile; then taken to – out of literally millions of planets in the galaxy – Maz Kanata, where she put it neatly in a box. In a box, to be given, someday, to someone, whom she met literally 10 or 15 minutes earlier.

Indeed, that is, in your words, an entirely “plausible explanation.”

In the Star Wars universe it is. And the fact Rey was drawn to it, and had visions from touching it is more than enough reason to give the saber to her.

And gas giants don’t have a fiery surface. If you’re taking a vacation of Jupiter, better pack your winter underwear, not that it will help much. 😉

If Rey experienced visions touching Luke’s old saber, Kylo may have had them from touching Vaders helmet?

In Heir To The Empire, Obi Wan appears to Luke for the last time with just such an explanation, having lingered too long already. Yoda and Anakin apparently never appeared to Luke again after the end of ROTJ.

That’s just as likely as him falling down and surviving but we can attribute “The will of The Force” to that but why can’t we apply it to this situation? Or why could it have been dumb luck that that lightsaber was found? The law of probability is a thing and if you haven’t noticed luck seems to be a motif in Star Wars.

It also makes sense that the test Ren has never faced before that Snoke spoke of was to go through with killing his father and rid himself of any possible feelings of sentiment to prove that he wouldn’t fail as they believed Vader had.

We know that Disney will be taking cues from Legends. Who’s to say they didn’t take this one?

Plus, wouldn’t it be silly if Force ghosts could last forever? If that was the case, why didn’t hundreds or even thousands of previously killed Jedi try to help train/guide Luke? Surely all those Jedi would share Obi-wan/Yoda’s desire to see the dark side overthrown too.

Then we would end up with all those gag endings of ROTJ where everybody shows up a a ghost.

Qui Gon is supposed to be the first to figure out how to come back as a ghost. That Liam Neeson wasn’t able to record dialog for the scene in ROTS explaining this didn’t help.

I think ren will probably fondle Vader’s manky helmet and be visited by Anakin/Vader’s ghost for sure, probably try and turn him to the light as apposed to the dark. I’d hate to see a force ghost that has a similar juxtaposed conflict to ren whilst communicating.

I will allow it is possible that the lightsaber was not destroyed, but it is much more difficult to concede that it was delivered to Maz, who merely relegated it to an unlocked box in her storage room, from which she later intuitively knew it to be calling to Rey and so made of it a gift without question…

Because logic falls away when you go into a movie wanting to hate it.

But HTTE is shit as bad as TPM. Any explanation it gives on anything is automatically implausible and stupid because … because … ysalamiri.

I was simply pointing out that the idea Obi Wan can’t hang around forever to give Luke advice isn’t new.

  1. R2 and C3P0 happen to land somewhere conveniently on the side of the planet where Luke is

R2 piloted the escape pod to the location Leia told him to go. The escape pod was navigable, unlike the TIE fighter Poe and Finn were in in TFA

That was never established in the film. Nice rationalization though.

Sorry to come back to this point so late. Here it is, straight from the official 1976 novelization of the original script:

Artoo’s seemingly random manipulation of the pod controls promised anything but a smooth landing, however. Threepio regarded his squat companion with concern. “Are you sure you know how to pilot this thing?”

There you have it. From an official original canon source. Sorry it took so long, but I had lost my copy of the novel, but as luck would have it, Walmart had a copy for $7.48 (the entire trilogy in one volume…great deal)!

So my assertion that R2 piloted the escape pod was correct. Now, I’m sure some folks will attempt to stick to their guns and try to save face by insisting something like, “Yeah, OK, fine, but they didn’t show that in the movie!”

In that’s your argument, fine. Don’t waste your time replying. You can maintain that position if you want to, but clearly the evidence leans very much in my favor and the notion that R2 piloted the pod is no where near a “rationalization.”

From our friends at NMSU: “Jupiter’s outer layer is primarily composed of molecular hydrogen. At greater depths the hydrogen starts resembling a liquid. At 10,000 kilometers below Jupiter’s cloud top liquid hydrogen reaches a pressure of 1,000,000 bar with a temperature of 6,000 K. At this state hydrogen changes into a phase of liquid metallic hydrogen. In this state, the hydrogen atoms break down yielding ionized protons and electrons similar to the Sun’s interior. Below this is a layer dominated by ice where “ice” denotes a soupy liquid mixture of water, methane, and ammonia under high temperatures and pressures. Finally at the center is a rocky or rocky-ice core of up to 10 Earth masses. The central pressure of Jupiter is 80 Million Bars, and the temperature is 25,000 K.”

False equivalence: “Both Ryan Mallett and Tom Brady throw interceptions; therefore, they are the same.”

  • The Starkiller sucking out the sun…

Yeah, these villains are brilliant. Suck out the star’s fuel so that it collapses and becomes a black hole and sucks their own planet up into it. I mentioned “Get Out of Jail Free” cards; this one is a “Get Off Death Row Free” card. Good God. Fortunately at this point in the movie, your intelligence has been so badly insulted, your brain is numb to it.

Original script or nay it matters not because the script has been revised and it mentions nothing about R2 piloting anything. I’m just going on what’s presented in the film and the official script.

           INT. IMPERIAL STARDESTROYER

On the main viewscreen, the lifepod carrying the two terrified
robots speeds away from the stricken Rebel spacecraft.

                                 CHIEF PILOT
                     There goes another one.

                                 CAPTAIN
Hold your fire. There are no life
forms. It must have been short-
                     circuited.

           INT. LIFEPOD

Artoo and Threepio look out at the receding Imperial starship.
Stars circle as the pod rotates through the galaxy.

                                 THREEPIO
                     That's funny, the damage doesn't
look as bad from out here.

           Artoo beeps an assuring response.

                                 THREEPIO
Are you sure this things safe?
