Harmy's RETURN OF THE JEDI Despecialized Edition HD - V3.1 — Page 75

All right, folks, the stereo mix for RotJ is completely done. I made a total of 26 edits to get it into a usable condition: patching over 12 reel changes, 2 laserdisc side breaks, and 3 other spots where sync is lost (possibly because of 2:3 cadence errors in the video); as well as 8 dropouts and 1 fairly severe instance of tape distortion.

That’s in addition to matching the level and EQ of the different sources to each other . . . It added up to kind of a lot of work, due to the necessity of listening closely to so many small details repeatedly; but it was definitely worth it, because this track sounds brilliant now. I hadn’t listened to it in years, since I’d mostly just been hearing the 1993 version lately. The 1983 mix is great, in some ways better than the '93, despite being less powerful. If the 70mm version sounded like the '83 stereo but with better dynamics, then I really wish we had a copy of it, because that would definitely be the ultimate version.

I’m now getting the Bluray LFE lined up with the GOUT, and from there it’s just a matter of setting the levels for the bass effects to blend in. Shouldn’t take too long, hopefully. Doing this in Pro Tools is so much easier than it was before, that’s for sure!

It looks like it was, Harmy. The GOUT seems to match the 35mm scan.

Yeah, I didn’t realize it, but as soon as CatBus mentioned the possibility, I remembered Jedi was the last one done of the v1.0s and I probably just used the same logos I already had from SW or ESB.
Actually, ESB v2.0 also uses the same logos as SW v2.0, which were taken from a 35mm print of SW, so if ESB also had the logos slightly different, those are also not perfectly accurate in v2.0 - this will of course be remedied in v2.5, now that we have complete 35mm versions of ESB thanks to TN1.

Excellent news! It seems in the end you’ll finish these ahead of me 😃

The new version looks amazing! All the problems with 1.0 are gone. No more floating eyebrows, low res jabba dance scene, etc. Couldn’t have asked for more!

I am assume that you rip your NTSC GOUT disc and select Forced Film in DGIndex before making an index. At any rate, anomalies in the 2:3 cadence ought not to affect audio sync.

Hey Harmy, do you have any opinions regarding the 2.0 Working Copy being available on the Spleen? Comments in there state it wasn’t intended for public distribution so I decided to hold tight before I downloaded.

You can go ahead and download - there will be a final version pretty soon but the more eyes on the WP the more likely it is that problems will be caught.

If I remember correctly, you also used the Fox logo from Alien.

You’re not wrong, but he’s talking about different logos, namely the green Lucasfilm LTD text and then the “A Long Long Time Ago…”

I do like what they did musically for the Alien 3 Fox logo.

It’s really sad when the “creative minds” behind something we hold dear are also guilty of its destruction.

Ha, I actually picked up the Alien blu-ray a couple of months ago and had the thought “this would be a good cheat in a SW preservation” when I fired it up and the Fox logo came on.

Out of interest, how many commentary and dubbing tracks are planned for this release?

Ol’ George has the GOUT, I see.

If the drive is big enough, you can just reformat it with your PC. This is all assuming you have a blu-ray drive or smart tv that will read the file format and drive format. There are also apparently instructions around here for splitting the mkv into smaller files.

thanks again for the response…

i do not have a blu ray drive yet? do you recommend a particular external blu ray writer ( i would need an external drive because i have no bays left on tower)?

ps-am i missing something or is rotj the only one thats not available in a format to burn to a dvd-r or dvd-r-dl? and if so what was the reason …just curious. remember im new here and am also not a techie but i want to try and learn.

The question about you having a blu-ray drive should have probably said blu-ray player (like for your TV) instead. The whole point of the posts was to get a drive that works for a blu-ray player. I assume you do if you’re asking about a burner.

As far as burners go, if you wanted to do that, I got an external Samsung one for about $70 (at the time) that works great.

And as far as DVDs go, it depends what you mean. The AVCHD format is essentially the blu-ray format, but small enough to fit on a DVD-DL. So you burn it to DVD-DL and play on a blu-ray player. All Despecialized have come out in this format. RoTJ 1.0 is available this way and actually not as an MKV at all.

If you meant DVD format that plays in a DVD player (so, non-HD), Harmy’s versions are also available that way, but might be harder to find. There is at least one very poorly rendered version of his RoTJ out there in this format, but there should be a good one out there too.

It should be mentioned in all such discussion that not all Blu-ray players will play AVCHD-on-DVD media. Quite a lot will, including common major brands and generic no-names alike, but some don’t. For those, you’d need a proper burned Blu-ray disc or a standard DVD.

but i read the “read me” file and it says that it should work in my usb drive. however even though my usb drive has 14 gigs free space it wont fit for some reason? has anyone else seen this? and can someone please point me in the right direction.

Regards, joey

Maybe your USB drive filesystem is FAT32? If so, you won’t be able to copy any file greater than 4GB on it.

Aargh! I’m sorry, I missed two full pages of this thread… And I was also wondering “why no one wrote here since january 4?”…

Of course a shit-ton of overall quality would be lost, but ConvertXtoDVD will take an MKV then build a DVD structure and burn the DVD. This is NOT recommended for anyone wanting HD quality, but at least you’d have a DVD to watch until you can move up to BD.

ok thanks towne32…so let me see if i understand…

once i get the blu ray burner will i be able to burn all 3 Harmy DE onto a standard (not blu ray) dvd-dl in the avchd format? but avchd will only be able to play on my blu ray player not a standard dvd player, right?

thanks for the reply nearsighted…

however im still wondering and maybe im missing something here? why was i able to burn the first two harmy ds editions for sw and esb to regular dvd and not lose much quality. but in turn im not able to do it with rotj? also was there a reason that rotj 1.0 or 2.0wp was not made in the ntsc format to begin with?

is rotj just not avaialable in a format that can be burned without a blu ray writer? because i guess thats what this issue comes down to i just need to get a blu ray writer?

when i do get my blu ray burner and am able to burn all of them in avchd then will i be able to notice a difference in the quality?

thanks again for everyones help,

joey

No. I think it’s my fault for trying to discuss too many options in single posts.

What format do you want the movies in? We can go from there.
