The Force Awakens, while the Republic sleeps

SPOILER ALERT SPOILER ALERT - PROCEED WITH CAUTION
Why did the Republic allow the First Order to come into being? Why didn’t the Republic utterly destroy the Empire and it’s remnants? How could the Republic allow the Order to build such a destructive weapon? Why do the Republic forces still look like a bunch of rebels? In the past 20 years, the USAF has upgraded it’s fleet from F-15 fighters to F-22s. Why hasn’t the Republic upgraded the X-wing fighters? Face it, the Republic deserved to fall in the first place. It’s like our US Congress, a bunch of babies fighting instead of taking care of proper business. I guess it takes an Emperor to rule the Universe, …and make the trains arrive on time.

Not sure this needed it’s own thread. And let’s keep real world politics in off topic where they belong?

Where were you in '77?

Uh, I haven’t actually watched the movie, but don’t the TFA X-Wings split open right through the engines?

Running a Galactic Government without Jedi to scare detractors seems to be difficult. The old republic fell to pieces when the Sith offered to get rid of the Jedi. The Empire needed to iron fist everyone into staying in line. Presumably the New Republic and the remains of the Empire were too evenly matched at the end of the Civil War for either side to win or hold dominance. They both consolidated their positions and became superpowers of a divided galaxy. Both sides use ships based on older designs but clearly updated and the resistance aren’t meant to be the main fleet of the Republic. They are an insurgence within First Order territory funded by the Republic with rather implausible deniablity

There are plenty of real world cases of unsavoury regimes building WMDs…
X-Wings have been upgraded, supposedly - for cinematic reasons they still look like X-Wings.
We don’t actually see any Republic forces, only Resistance, and they pretty much get obliterated by the Starkiller Base weapon.

We aren’t entirely sure how widespread the First Order is. I got the impression that the Republic was larger with the First Order significant and dangerous. They change the game a bit by blowing up the main Republic systems

Well the answer is simple. They rehashed much of the stuff from OT in attempt to play on nostalgia note.

It is funny seeing people like Bingo and Frink, who criticise ROTJ for minor stuff, firecely defending all the major stupid stuff in TFA.

I criticize minor stuff in ROTJ and Bingo defends major stuff in TFA? You better provide some links because you’re just making shit up otherwise.

I have no issues with ROTJ other than the fighting prowess of the Ewoks. It’s a perfectly serviceable Star Wars movie, almost as good as TFA.

Nice response, signifying nothing. Put up or shut up.

When has the Republic, old or new, ever been portrayed as an institution that would “utterly destroy” a defeated aggressor? That’s just not what they were/are. I believe you’re thinking of the Empire.

If you read my posts about TFA I am very critical of it and prefer ROTJ despite my problems with that film. I’m just pointing out that we don’t really know what Sith/Jedi/Etc training actually means so the Force users in TFA may be able to do things that the Jedi and Sith couldn’t do without having their level of training.
