Great stuff Team. I especially love the brightness of the clip, I’m getting that seeing things I’ve never seen before feeling, the Ugnaught garbage disposal room has never been so bright!
Keep it up guys!

The clean up has been done nicely. The dirt on the footage is barely noticable for me. 😃

The workprint for Version 3 - has been rendered in 1080p, and we are doing some
final checks before release.

The Empire Strikes Back - Sanitized [V3]

1080p Mkv will be the first release - 25G
Bd ISO - 25G, will come later.

There may be one or two more previews before the final release.

Since this is not a full restoration, due to the use of heavy
digital manipulation, there might be some slight artifacts in it.

The intent of this version, was to test the cleanup, and make
watching Empire Strikes Back more enjoyable and presentable.

HYPED! Awesome stuff! So I take it this isn’t the final version of the film transfer? Can’t wait to see it either way. Time to buy another hard drive!

From what I understand, this is a testbed to experiment with cleanup methods to be used on the other projects.

Watched the near final preview. There are some new fixes made.
-The intro and crawl have been cleaned up further.
-Luke going into the cave, further cleanup.
-Head and tail of Reel 4, further cleanup.
-Reel 5 has had further cleanup.
-Reel 6 has had further cleanup since the preview.
-The end credits have been cleaned.

Once these have been re-inserted, we will sync
the sound(which has not been as fixed up yet),
and be able to release it in another week or two.

A BD ISO will follow shortly afterwards.

Awesome! I’m honestly surprised this is happening before Star Wars is finished.

I can’t remember if I asked this before or if I’ve seen you guys respond to this question, but will the stereo mix be restored in any capacity, and if so will it be comparable to the theatrical mix heard on laserdiscs pre-85?

In addition to this, will the MKV have multiple audio tracks to choose from? Thanks guys! I can’t wait to see it!

Here is the current plan for the release of Empire Strikes Back - Sanitized.

1 Just to get the ball rolling, a first 25 G mkv file, which will be a bare release 3.0
for those that just want to get it first, and play it their computers:

  • English 35mm audio (not restored)
  • 1080p video h.264 encoding

2 After that a slightly improved version 3.1 - 25 G BD ISO, which is for people that
would like to burn it to a disc, and watch it on TV, or projectors:

  • Basic menu
  • English 35 audio
  • 1080p video h.264
  • Possible color correction on a few scenes

===============================================================
We really don’t have time to polish it any more currently or
add the usual features.

We would like the community to help in releasing these :

1 Subtitles (English, and others)
2 Make it GOUT compatible
2a Include Different mixes
3 Once GOUT compatible
3a Include different audio languages

4 Optional - Color correction on certain scenes

If you work on any of these, please post them here, and we will credit
you once done, and package those along with it.

At this point, there will be slight differences from the previous
Grindhouse version, so those files from that can probably be
further improved to be compatible with this release.

As stated, this was never meant to be a full blown restoration,
but a version to hold people over, until a more complete one can
be done.

There will still be some minor issues in it, but you can see from the
previews the amount of cleanup that has been done. It will be a much
more enjoyable version for those that want to sit back and have a bit
more of a polished version, visually.

Will this be a similar level of detail to the Grindhouse version?

I would be interested in doing cleanup work on the 35mm audio.

From what I’ve heard of it, the main issues are crackling and popping due to damage at reel changes, as well as excessive noise throughout. I believe I’d be able to do something about both of these issues. I would also gain-match the audio so that the dialog sits at the same reference level it would have originally been mixed at.

I would need to have the audio at 24-bit resolution, with a sampling rate of at least 48 kHz. A higher rate might offer some advantages for the cleanup processing, although it would not contain any more detail within the audible frequency range. (Anything over 96 kHz is probably a waste.)

Let me know if you guys are interested in collaborating on this. I wouldn’t be able to start right away, since I’m currently working on the tracks for RotJ Despecialized 2.0, but I can get going after that is finished.
