So what wound up being the story with the 4K Texas Chain Saw Massacre remaster? Did it have the original mono or not?

It does.

From what I’m told, there are errors with it that were corrected on the UK disc.

So what’s the word on Pan’s Labyrinth? I hear the U.S. DVD was DNRed to hell, is the U.K. disc the best bet? Is there non-DNR region A version? I’m region free, so I can get the U.K. disc, but it’d be easier to get a region A or region free on if I can.

I’m curious why they don’t just make HD scans of the shorts.

I believe the studio digital masters are 1080p, but they decided to port them over as SD on the BD set, most likely to save on disc space for the other features on the BD bonus disc (being only 25gbs IIRC, with some HD features thrown in but not very many).

WB does this a lot for bonus features not essential to the main feature on BDs. An example of this is the 1939 Hunchback Of Notre Dame, in which the main film is 1080p but the some of the vintage shorts (despite being sourced from a recent master or HD scan) are only 480i/p.

Is that also what’s on the separate BD of the Fleischer shorts?

I seem to recall the first Lethal Weapon blu-ray release having a very poor transfer. They actually redid it when the sequels were released, but unfortunately when I bought the box set it included the 2006 transfer of Lethal Weapon 1.

The best Fleischer release is the separate DVD issue which fixed an error or two. Why there is no HD today is stupid. I’ve asked the WB archive and they have no idea.

There’s also many transfers stuck in the old DVD mastering era, such as Mission Impossible. Goldeneye seems to use a video master from the 1995 LD and 1999 DVD.

But the worst major release from a studio aside from poor elements or a smaller label having lack of money or care…is Universals Family Plot. Holy **** you can obviously tell they did not care about their Hitchcock stable and still do not. What an atrocious mangling of the Master’s final work. The DVD is better in every single possible way.

So has anybody mentioned Moontrap from 1989 with Walter Koenig and Bruce Campbell?

Good LORD. That’s the worst Blu-ray transfer ever right there. Terrible picture quality dipping into VHS at times with pale blacks and no detail (which would be bad enough it weren’t cropped from 4:3 to 16:9… and it is). And unlike some of Anchor Bay’s output, this release doesn’t even have the courtesy of giving us a decent audio track to make up for the picture quality. Its audio track poorly defined with muddled music, sound effects and speech.

Holy balls. In not necessarily a videophile but yeah that’s barely even SD quality. And I’ve seen dvds with more detail.

I’m not sure how well my computer screen can distinguish between SD & HD imagery, but yeah, it looks pretty poor to me, too.

To be fair that movie isnt really worth much effort.

I’m surprised it ever even made it to blu ray.

There was this post-apocalyptic polish movie that released on blu-ray, but the blu-ray was nothing but a re-release of the DVD down to the very same files.

If anyone knows the name, let me know.

The fact that you took the 20ish seconds to post this, means you care at least a teensy tiny bit.
