The JEDIT Awakens.
The JEDIT Awakens.
btw, what’s with /the site’s/ countdown being so negative about TFA? I mean, it’s almost like he’d want things to go backwards, back to the OT.

It’s accurate.
I’m probably the biggest Dark Crystal fan around here, and I can say without hesitation George had no involvement with the script. Henson’s people did help out a bit with Yoda on Empire, as DC was years in pre production, and it was mutually beneficial to both parties. Lucas even tried to replicate Henson’s Creature Shop at ILM for ROTJ, with mixed results.
ILM did the matte paintings for DC, but that’s about it for any Lucas connection.
I welcome you to provide evidence to the contrary.
ILM was George lucas’s company and they had direct involvement
I think you’re getting Dark Crystal confused with Labyrinth, which Lucas co produced with Henson.

Hard to believe it’s only been two weeks since the movie came out. Feels like six months around here. 😉
We’re going to switch it to a countdown for Rogue One soon.

That’s gotta be a record.
Deleted those multiple markdown syntax messages to tidy up a bit. 😃

FWIW, from the visual dictionary.
How comes it reminds me of this? 😄

That’s what happened with Owen and Beru in my personal canon. 😉

That never gets old. 😄
So they went into battle with non-lethal riot control gear? And one of them used this non-lethal riot control gear in the middle of a chaotic battle to call out and fight a dude with a lightsaber?
I really disliked that scene. Now it makes even less sense.

Yeah…that doesn’t make a lick of sense. You would think the First Order would just modify the thing to deliver a lethal voltage.
It would have been better off being a newer version of the weapons General Grevious’ personal guards used. Those were lightsaber resistant.

I just realized that the Force Awakens essentially “retconned” (does that mean written out of canon?) the PT. The PT made clear that Vader was destined to destroy the Sith based on some ancient prophecy, and I’m assuming that Kylo Ren and that fish guy in the hologram are Sith - or at least the equivalent. So basically all that nonsense about the space prophecy and Vader being the savior of the universe was irrelevant.

The Sith are one of many organizations that uses the dark side. The Nightsisters in TCW aren’t Sith and neither is Kylo Ren and his master. Abrams mentioned that Kylo Ren isn’t a Sith. Therefore, the prophecy is irrelevant to TFA. It never said “destroy the dark side.”
I thought the prophecy from the pt was to bring balance to the force. Doesn’t Von Sydow’s character say that without Luke there can be no balance?

At this point you might as well regard that bit of lunacy as N/A.
I never really understood that prophecy. How can there be balance if you destroy the Sith and let Jedi reign supreme? Isn’t that tipping the balance far to one side?

This page from the visual dictionary has also resurrected my confusion about who exactly the first order are. They have territory? So they are actually the ruling power in some regions? I was under the impression they were imperial remnants trying to regain the glory days mixed with young fanatics trying to emulate the empire?
War does not make one great.

Maybe he forgot to switch it from “good” to “evil.”

Hey, have we seen your review yet?

If Snoke is Plagueis that would obviously trump Abrams’ statement and of course Kylo would emerge a fully trained Sith Lord when he completes his training.
I’ve been hesitant to post my opinion of the film until it had plenty of time to settle. I’ve seen it twice now and feel like my opinion is pretty well formed. My first viewing was 70mm IMAX at the Indiana State Museum and it was spectacular and incredibly immersive. My second was just a standard 2d digital projection at an Alamo Drafthouse (snagged a couple of those cool Millennium Falcon menus too!).
I had a blast watching the film the first time. It made Star Wars fun again, which was a big deal. But it wasn’t perfect. The thing that stood out the most while watching it was the cgi characters (yellow yoda, Snoke, whatever digital trickery they did to Carrie Fisher’s face) all stood out prominently as looking fake on such a large format with such striking clarity. But some other things felt off too - Death Star 3 in particular left a sour taste to me. But I walked out of the theater happy and with a gut reaction that it was as least as good as ROTJ… Maybe better.
Then as days went by and I thought about it more and read others’ thoughts the problems in the film started to irk me more. Did they REALLY have to ape the plot of the original film SO MUCH? Did they really have to make Starkiller Base yet another Death Star? That and many of the other complaints/issues that have been brought up ad nauseam began to take their toll on my opinion of the movie, but I knew I needed to see it again before I could make up my mind.
When I saw it the second time, I had the same reaction I’ve seen others on here mention. All those problems melted away and I just had a really fun time. The cgi was much more palatable (i even though maz kanata actually looked good and I couldn’t see anything weird about Leia’s face - though I have a feeling the much smaller screen and lower resolution helped that tremendously). The plot structure was fine and even Starkiller Base didn’t bother me despite how lazy it was. The characters are so good, fun, and likable that the films problems fade into the background. Han and Chewie really steal the show for me, but the new characters are all great too. I especially like Kylo Ren. He’s so different from the villains we’ve seen in the previous movies. I really like the idea of him wanting to be dark but struggling with the pull of the light. Can’t wait to see how that pans out in future films.
So overall, my initial gut reaction has held fast. I like it just as much as Return of the Jedi which is a huge step in the right direction for the franchise as a whole. It will take some time and several more viewings before I can really sort out exactly where TFA stands in relation to ROTJ (SW and ESB are on such a high pedestal that I seriously doubt anything else will ever come close), but for now I’m just happy to steal a line from someone else around here: there is finally a fourth Star Wars film!

If Snoke is Plagueis
I’d rather Snoke be a giant midichlorian than he be Plagueis.
Anyway, I really cared about Finn, Han’s death was an excellent scene, Rey vs. Kylo was an excellent climax, and I love that Luke wears a gold and white version of his ROTJ robes. However, TFA feels extremely disconnected from the OT and doesn’t feel like it takes place in the Star Wars universe. The lighting-pacing-music combination that gives Star Wars its identity isn’t there. The music is performed in a way that makes it fail to convey the emotions that the music conveyed in the OT. The Starkiller Base weapon is introduced out of nowhere and feels like it went out of its way to rehash the OT.

The lighting-pacing-music of “Star Wars” was over thirty years ago.
