I don’t know if Team Negative 1 has a print of the special edition theatrical already, but there is a full 7-reel print of Return of the Jedi SE (1997) on a well-known auction site, ending in less than 2 days.

I assume you mean this one - it looks nice. If anyone has the $$$, I’d be happy to get it scanned, send you the scan and then you could resell the reels on eBay - it would be like renting it! You might even get a few hundred more than you paid for it… I’d do it myself but I don’t have the cash for the initial buy 😦

I would be willing to chip in a little if others are going for this. I also have no where close to enough spare cash to purchase it, though. Could start a PM thread to see what can be raised (and to make sure no one is bidding against ourselves).

At some point in the future, we will be working on the SE versions of the film. Not sure what the timeframe would be.

Also, good to hear the Harmy will be able to use the footage of the scans we sent him. The eyebrow shot looks good.

We will have some announcements about Return of the Jedi sometime next year.

Yeah, I’m using a lot of your scans, especially in the first half of the movie and the latest scans you sent me for the Sarlacc scene are simply marvelous! But the eyebrow scene comes from a 4K scan done by someone else - I never actually got that scene from you guys.

Good to hear Harmy, and good job on the new version.

Glad to know you were able to use the scans.

If we need to coordinate on the future version, let us know.
We will see what we can do.

The color correction will always be an ongoing issue, so keep
working on fixing that also. We will see what our references
end up looking like. Everyone will have a different take on that,
as usual.

[In before obligatory ‘welcome back negative1’.]

Really though, good job on the scans and getting them to him.

Thanks for the offers, but we don’t need any more prints of this.

With the prints we have access to, we will definitely be able to have the best possible restoration out there.

Need to read through the threads chaps, that was there original set-up, things have moved up a notch since then.

It seems like you don’t plan a Grindhouse because the prints are better than ESB.  Sounds fair, although, just having watched the ESB grindhouse I would be very excited to see Jedi unstabilized and with scratchy reel changeovers - The imperfections in the print go a long way to recreating a theatrical feel and aren’t in the least bit distracting- it’s what we miss about going to a cinema right?

I agree. I just watched the “grindhouse” release of TESB and it was awesome. It would be nice to have a matching “grindhouse” set of all three movies, even if they are not all at the exact same level of “grindhouseness”. This has always been my idea of a perfect home video version of any movie, i.e., straight from a film print and nothing else. We never get that from official home video releases.

Actually, that’s a great idea to my mind as well. Sure, you’re putting a lot of effort into the final product, and we all are waiting for it impatiently, but if it’s not too much hustle, grindhouse versions of the original trilogy would keep us happy for now. Me, I’d be all for it! Although I do realize, you might be too busy working on the final product and don’t want to be distracted…

People who alter or destroy works of art and our cultural heritage for profit or as an exercise of power are barbarians, and if the laws of the United States continue to condone this behavior, history will surely classify us as a barbaric society.

We have plans for Return of the Jedi, but it won’t take as much effort as the other films, so we’ll decide on what release versions will come out.

We do want the best versions to come out first, but in the case of the Empire Strikes Back, it would have taken much longer.

You could release subpar versions of Star Wars and Jedi right now and everyone here would be overjoyed. We have seen your progress, we have a fairly good idea of what the end product will look like, and I for one would not be disappointed if there was a grindhouse to tide us over for a bit. I love the Empire grindhouse, even with the reel scratches and red shifted colours.

In short: C’mon. Camaaaaahhhhhnnnn.

cough Um, please.

Currently, the plans and workflow only allow so many projects to be worked on. Ultimately, there will be at least 2 main versions of each film released.

1 Star Wars LPP with Eastman replacements, this is the first priority.

The rest of the projects will be in parallel.

2 Empire Strikes Back - Sanitized - [Eastman-Fuji hybrid]

3 Star Wars [Eastman]
4 Return of the Jedi [LPP Hybrid]
5 Empire Strikes Back [Fuji]
6 Return of the Jedi [Eastman]

And then the SE, and the Prequels.

So there’s a lot to look forward to next year and beyond.

Next year will be long remembered. Thanks for the update, can’t wait.

Although we haven’t mentioned them, we would wait for the best restorations to come out first, before thinking about a Grindhouse version of the other films.

That would increase the number of releases to at least 3 for each film.

In the words of Steve the monkey…
EXCITED! EXCITED!

I’m extremely grateful for all Harmy has done for us, but once completed these will be my go to versions of the Trilogy.

I also agree…all 3 movies in GR. will be like listening an old records…(ESB had that effect on me I was in 1980)

That would be a pain to get their hands on considering there’s like 2 prints in existence.

Not to mention there wouldn’t be any point, as JJ Abrams and Disney are not likely going to tinker with it after its release.

Are there any efforts to retrieve a DCP?
