I’m going to say that this is probably half of why I didn’t enjoy TFA:

I didn’t find the movie really absorbing. I spent too much time thinking about it while in the theatre. Whether this is TFA’s fault, or my own, or the fact that the movie wasn’t focused properly on the screen, or some combination thereof, I’m not sure. I think I would have enjoyed the film more had I not been analyzing it while watching it, simply because I wouldn’t have noticed the flaws so much.

I think you’d enjoy it a lot more if you saw it again.

I don’t

For once I agree with Bosk. Some people shouldn’t watch it again, in fact they probably shouldn’t have watched it the first time.

I agree but from what Ric posted it sounded like he just wasn’t in the proper mindset.

Oh sorry, I thought that was directed at Bosk. Ric might enjoy it more the next time, I agree.

You know, if you think about it, he wasn’t that badass, considering Poe had no problem making fun of him since the very first scene 😄

Good guys always mock the bad guys. Or do you really think Tarkin smelled and kept Vader on a leash? 😉

Where were you in '77?

If anything, you could complain that Vader is weak in ANH because no one seems afraid of him.

I’m not saying that, but again, let’s be consistent.

Leia is afraid of him since the first scene, just look at her eyes. The next time we see him, is when he fights Obi-wan and literally kills him. In the trench run, he kills Luke’s comrades one-by-one, and this builds more and more the tension and the fear that Luke might be his next victim. So, yeah, I’m consistent: I felt he was an actual constant threat in ANH.

“Always” not sure (honestly, I can’t remember other fitting examples in the OT), but you’re right about Tarkin 😄
Doesn’t help that’s Ren’s first scene. Again, consider that’s not Vader’s case in ANH, hell in the whole OT. These guys are supposed to be the main villains, after all 😄

consequence of a not-so-good writing, to me.

Lawrence Kasdan… what a hack…

Kasdan is an artist, but brainstorming at Lucasfilm must’ve not gone very well, if the best villain they decided to make him write was Ren. No villain, not a good movie, to me.

Lord Haseo said:
I don’t think you understand what the character of Kylo Ren is supposed to be . Kylo Ren is not supposed to be a good villain yet. He is a mentally unstable kid who masquerades as someone who has power like Vader but has yet to be fully trained.

Also not so good writing has nothing to do with it. The writer’s made him a would be Darksider because part of his arc will be him becoming exponentially stronger in the sequels.

Let’s say he’s flawed for the sake of the next movies, I’m ok with it. But the problem is still the same: there’s no actual threat I felt in TFA.

btw, happy New Year from Italy!

If you felt he wasn’t a threat then the film makers did their job

People seem to forget lucas only directed ANH and the shitty prequels.

Still, he was the primary author behind the other two.

“Story by:…” and special effects are what he was good at (and darn good at). He should have stuck to those and let other people write the script, direct, etc.

Good for them. I guess it’s just not my kind of movie, then: I like movies with adventure and mystery, but different kind of tension and drama, it’s subjective.

Yes, Leia was afraid of Vader, but you had wise asses like Admiral Motti who openly mocked him, at least until they couldn’t breathe. Only Tarkin intervenes.

Vader seems to wield much more authority in Empire. And nobody is around to stop Vader throttling incompetent officers.

Ren hasn’t achieved full villain status yet, but he’s getting there. Snoke is arguably the main villain, as he’s the puppet master pulling all the strings.

I’m not sure what adventure and mystery have to do with a villain being a threat but you’re entitled to your opinion. If he completes his training by the time Episode VIII takes place he will be a monster. He showed a lot of potential in TFA

And Vader never held a blaster bolt in mid air like that. Ren’s potential is actually frightening.

Yeah… It doesn’t matter if he’ll be a better villain in Ep.VIII, I still feel there’s no actual villain in TFA, so I can’t say it’s a good movie to me, it doesn’t have what I like to see in a movie.

It also doesn’t have a clear main character, the usual complaint about TPM.

You should care because there’s going to be a trilogy.

Who is Rey?

Not only that his pain tolerance is pretty high. I mean not only did he survive being shot by Chewie’s bowcaster (which we know would have killed anyone else) he then went on to wreck Finn and he dominated Rey until she tapped into The Force.
