Harmy's STAR WARS Despecialized Edition HD - V2.7 - MKV (Released) — Page 574

Hi there,

I just watched Star Wars - Harmy’s Despecialised edition. I haven’t touched star wars since revenge of the sith shat all over my love of it. Thankyou Harmy, it brought me back, and I finally got to see Star Wars before it was butchered by Lucas, who had every right to butcher it. I have a couple of questions, there is a yellow flare during the collisions between Darth Vader’s and Obi Wan’s lightsaber battle, forgive my naievity (I only ever saw video’s recorded from tv and the 97 remastered edition) and dont ever remember seeing a yellow flare. I don’t really like it, it jigged me, that’s my only criticism, is it fixable? My other question is; what if some of the adjustments Lucas made to the films are good? I love the old school puppet graphics much more than cgi, but the lightsaber thing … surely we don’t wanna see a dodgy yellow flare?

With love and light, Richie

If the yellow flare was in the original, it stays in this version as Harmy is aiming to preserve the original theatrical editions in HD.

If you want a version of the film that keeps some of the special edition alterations then i recommend you check out the semi specialized edits by KK650 http://originaltrilogy.com/topic/kk650s-Star-Wars-Saga-Regraded-and-Semi-Specialized/id/15637

Yes. Or Hal9000’s.

Rich: Either way, just don’t expect Harmy to do it. It’s not the goal of the project. And the fact of the matter is that everyone will want different changes included in their ‘semi-specialized’ versions. There’s no objective line to draw. For instance, a couple days ago, I decided I wanted to watch a semi-specialized version that has zero of the Tatooine CGI animals in it. One doesn’t exist, so I made my own.

But yes, I think it is a case of mis-remembering when it comes to the lightsaber clashes. See here: https://picasaweb.google.com/102542760950977079734/StarWarsSpecialEditionChangesHD#5553982793858346322

Exactly - the yellow flashes have always been there and they look way worse in the SE.

Are any of the Harmy restorations Blu-Ray? If not where can I find good ones

What do you mean by that exactly?
Are you referring to resolution? They are 720p (1280 pixels wide, 720 pixels tall). That is HD. Not quite 1080p, but still HD.
Are you asking if they’re physically on Blu-Ray discs? No, they’re not. But you can burn them to Blu-Ray discs.

thank you so much for the info guys. I really appreciate it. Even though the flares irritated me (that is a personal choice of feeling) I love this despecialised edition so much. I love it. Thank you so much Harmy and team for all of your amazing work.

It’s so great that you’re doing this. I had no idea until recently that the Star Wars movies I had always watched were drastically different from the theatrical releases. After just recently watching them before going to see TFA, my dad was telling me that in the theaters, ANH didn’t originally have an episode title in the crawl because it was just called Star Wars. I started looking online to see if I could find the original version and quickly learned of all of George Lucas’s changes over the years and his refusal to release the theatrical versions in a high quality format. Suddenly all the strange things I noticed while watching the movies made sense such as that weird dinosaur walking across the screen in ANH, or Anakin’s head replaced in RoTJ. I came across this project and was amazed to see the amount of people that really care about this. I bought the blue rays just so that I could download these versions and enjoy the OT as it was meant to be watched. To Harmy and all the other people involved in this project, thank you for doing this and putting in what I can only imagine must be thousands and thousands of hours of your time.

No I’m asking if they have Blu-ray menu’s.

Also Harmy, is the sound in the movie supposed to be distorted?

Hello, Harmy and friends! I’ve been a longtime lover of the original editions and this Christmas I successfully burned the 1.0 editions to DVD and watched the whole trilogy with my relatives - obviously it was magical.

But that’s not why I joined. I have two questions about getting the most out of these movies burned on DVD. The DVDs I watched were a present for my older cousin-in-law; I will be making a second copy of the trilogy for myself. I possess ISO files in AVCHD format of the 1.0 editions of Harmy’s (they were downloaded a long time ago and I am please with them and don’t need to find the 2.5/2.0 editions). My questions are:

  1. How do I switch the audio tracks with my Blu-ray player? I first watched them on a TV with an LG 4.1 soundbar and it seemed to default to the 2.0 stereo English track. For the equipment it sounded pretty good and I could hear dialogue mostly fine, implying the voices were separated and not focused on a center channel as in 5.1. However, when I first watched the beginning of the movies on my computer with two speakers, it sounded like the dialogue was muffled, as in it shouldn’t have been but was using the 5.1 track; I don’t know for certain which audio track it was using so I’m just asking how to makes sure the best audio track is selected because I don’t have a surround sound system. My Blu-ray player is a Sony BDPS 3500 and I don’t think I could change audio tracks just by pressing the audio button on the remote control. I would like to listen to the commentary and score-only tracks I believe were included in 1.0.

  2. Is it possible to attach subtitles to non-archive ISO files, which are the versions I have, or to a burned DVD somewhere in the folders? There were a few moments I had trouble hearing, usually when an alien something is named or when dialogue was quiet. Most online tutorials use MKV, MP4 or AVI files as examples, not ISOs. I have subtiles in SRT I found on OpenSubtitles that may work with the Despecialized Editions but I’ll try to get the Threepio subtiles if I get a satisfactory answer. I used InfraRecorder to write the ISO images; what software should I use to add subtitles?

Re: audio, most Blu-ray remotes have an AUDIO button that lets you switch between audio sources. The default 5.1 track mixed down to stereo would get a little muddied, so it’s safest to recommend one of the stereo tracks for best clarity. Some players don’t understand DTS-MA under some/all circumstances, so won’t play the default track (either silence or they’ll pick another track).

Re: subtitles, Project Threepio has a huge, detailed README that should answer all questions. PM me if you need a link to the complete project. In short, the best thing to do is to unpack the contents of the ISO, and make a new ISO with subs embedded.

You definitelly should get the updated versions though - v1.0s are pretty terrible in comparrison and the new ones are also available as DVD9 AVCHD. Your choice though, I’m not gonna George Lucas you into it 😄

But Harmy, I thought v2 was your original vision. :p

Author

No, actually, v2.5 has always been my original vision - until v3.0 comes out, then that will have always been my original vision 😄

With the new link to TUIG, is it still possible to download a PDF copy?

Thanks.

Apparently no one listens to me so I’ll try again:p

No, it isn’t.

What distortion are you referring to?

Just the sound seems to be distorted when there are explosions or blaster battles.

Something in your playback system could be clipping on loud noises. The source isn’t clipped though.

That’s probably what it is. The default soundtrack is dynamic as all heck, so the loud sections can easily overload smaller sound systems, such as TV speakers.

Try switching to track 2, which is the 35mm stereo mix, and see if it still happens. Since the dynamic range of this mix is reduced compared to track 1, it should all come through cleanly, without distortion. Track 4, which is the 1985 version, should also work.
