Info Wanted: Open Matte versions of the Prequels?

Not sure where I should post this, so feel free to move it. I’m experimenting with the prequels, and I was wondering if there’s any sort of HDTV versions of the films with a more open matte than the 2:39:1 ratio commonly used for the films. I’m going to do some cropping/zooming myself and was hoping to have as much image real estate as possible.

Whereas it MIGHT exist for episodes 2 and 3 (but I’m not sure if they just hard cropped the 1080p image or used a 1.3 anamorphic squeeze lens) but it wouldn’t exist for episode 1 which was shot on film with 2x anamorphic lenses. Everything that’s on the film is pretty much up on screen.

What’s the internal temperature of a TaunTaun? Luke warm.

Even some of the Phantom Menace visual effects shots on the blu ray extra features show a 16x9 ratio like the other two prequels. However, there is nothing I’ve seen that indicates the any shot was finished at that ratio. I’m pretty sure all the full screen dvd’s of the prequels are pan and scan from 2.35-1 and any tv broadcast at 1.78-1 is cropped from the theatrical ratio as well.

You could also see a 16x9 image on the flatscreen monitors Lucas used on the set. (I think there were 2.35 framing marks though.) The raw digital footage has that ratio at least.

I have the fullscreen DVD’s and there is no extra headroom or legroom. What I saw of the movies when they still aired on Spike revealed no extra picture area. I don’t think they’ve aired anywhere since the Spike deal expired, at least not in the U.S.

It’s not impossible some mutant open matte broadcast master has aired somewhere else in the world, but where to look for it?
