It’s also possible that the scene just didn’t turn out well. People have been claiming that Lupita gave a bad performance, which is ridiculous. They could get her to re-record if needed. I think it’s much more likely that however Carrie performed the scene, it didn’t carry the necessary emotion for holding her brother’s lightsaber. Just speculation, of course.

But also, what would have happened with the lightsaber? Maz gives it to Finn, Finn has it in the battle, loses it, gets it back, gives it back to Maz. Maz gives it to Leia, somehow it gets back to Finn who loses it with Kylo? It’s not a baton. I’m just glad it wasn’t twirling in space after the crawl. I’m glad that rumor was nonsense.
