It’s weird that a movie released in 2015 doesn’t seem like it was released in 1977, right? What a disappointment!

there is a difference to me between saying that a movie doesn’t feel like it was realized in 1977 and saying that movie doesn’t seem like Star Wars.

ESB feels like Star Wars to me, but doesn’t feel like 1977 movie to me.

Lol, there’s a big difference between a 1980 movie and a 2015 movie. Guess which one should feel more like a 1977 movie…

Author
Time

true, but my point is that movie can seem like a Star Wars movie with seeming like a 1977 movie.

SW and ESB actually have fairly different styles and tones. I won’t deny they feel more similar to each other than to TFA, but Frink is right, this is a film 35 years later. It’s a new, modern chapter in the saga and should have a different sort of feel, but, honestly to me it still mostly feels like a Star Wars movie. It’s just hard to reconcile it with the OT considering how long they’ve been around and how familiar we are with them.

There are some things in TFA that are modern and look like nothing in the OT but they are still Star Wars to me. Other things, not so much.

I will admit, there are little things that take me out of the film. When for example, Finn asks Rey, “Do you have a boyfriend?” That right there, like what. Boyfriend? That’s never something ever in the vocabulary in any of the six films. Closest would be Han asking Luke, “Do you think a guy like me and a girl like–” “No” but I dunno, what Finn said felt like such a Earthy thing to say.

I think someone says “girlfriend” in the prequels.

My initial thought was that “I think that’s totally from a deleted scene of AotC”, and yep, around 5:00, “boyfriend” is mentioned instead: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tM5Lu40PZJQ

Still, I don’t think I recall boyfriend/girlfriend mentioned in any true form of the films. I could be wrong, but I’m almost sure it’s the case.

I think the dialogue in TFA was really on the nose. It’s hard to tell only seeing the film twice in theaters, not being able to watch at home, not having the script in front of me, but I recall little if any subtext to anything that was said. In that regard, the dialogue mimicked the prequels much more than the OT.

Harrison Ford was the exception. We know his history of throwing out the script and improving his character’s lines.

It’s definitely in Clones. I think Owen introduces Beru as his girlfriend when they meet Anakin and Padme? I can’t find the clip on youtube.

This turned out to be fun as I had to literally pop in my DVD. Yep, you are correct after all!

I remember more about a deleted scene than I do about an actual scene that took place in the film. That should say a lot lmao

I’d hate to see a sequel/prequel of any other classic films which takes everything away from the ‘originals’.

Then don’t ever see any of the sequels to Highlander.

I’m seeing it again next weekend, thanks to my awesome wife who surprised me with tickets for yesterday in addition to our expected viewing next weekend. I’m fully prepared to lower my rating from 9/10 to 8/10 after the second viewing, but we’ll see.

You lucky fellow! Three cheers for Mrs. Frink! 😃

Where were you in '77?

ANH: 10/10 - Wonderful standalone film
ESB: 9.5/10 - Only slightly lower because it leans on the prior film as setup; not a bad thing at all, and this one is still my personal favorite; cinematic alchemy
ROTJ: 8/10 - Somewhat hamfisted conclusion with some ANH retreading but gripping character interactions
TPM: 5.5/10 - Mixed bag of world building and flat direction; could have easily been much better than it is; less than what was expected but a fair film in its own right
AOTC: 4/10 - Given the film’s heritage, a very awkward film whose characters fail to resonate and plot to click into place, with overused CGI that prevents any engagement; lowers the bar for the franchise for the foreseeable future
ROTS: 5/10 - The film’s poor execution can’t rob it of its intrigue, though it’s still got the same problems as its predecessor
TFA: 7.5/10 - Wonderful characters and filmmaking works well to establish a new scene against the backdrop of an ANH retread that ‘might have gone too far in a few places.’ If I’m being fair, it’s just under ROTJ.

My stance on revising fan edits.

Are you joking?

The dialogue in this movie seems so natural and is delivered exceptionally. To compare it to the stilted gobbledegook of the prequels is to compare tree sap to honey.

I honestly can’t understand this comment.

I’ve barely understood anything that guy has been saying.

Do you even know what subtext is bro?

I understand what he’s saying, the film is forgettable and nobody will be quoting lines from it as nothing in it etched itself into any cognitive area. It was just like an action movie, a series of visual events that although entertaining, is ultimately forgettable. I think a lot of people are trying very hard to like the film after the prequels but I think on a few viewings at home and not on the big screen they will see all the faults in all their glory.

Perhaps they might be. Perhaps I am. Perhaps people are trying very, very hard to dislike the film also due to the prequels. Perhaps definitely the last one.

For me it’s nothing to do with the prequels, this is the beginning of a new set of star wars spin offs with tfa clearly setting out a new trilogy. I didn’t dislike the film like I completely disliked the prequels, I just left confused as to what this film actually was which, for me seemed a film that was poorly executed. It could have been brilliant! I just felt they tried to hard if that makes sense? Almost as if they sat around the table throwing as many ideas at it as possible. Keep it simple Imo it didn’t require a lot of the elements contained within it to set the scene for the subsequent installments!

Not a fan of ranking films, but here goes…
Star Wars: 4,5/5 - Groundbreaking classic. A celebration of film and the ultimate feel good (fantasy) film. Only a weak middle act (Death Star) keep it from a perfect score. (best film score ever produced)
The Empire Strikes Back: 5/5 - Perhaps the boldest sequel ever made. A dark fairytale so beautifully conceived it hurts. A masterpiece in the genre on every level.
Return of the Jedi: 2/5 - Huge disappointment. Stupid and poor conclusion that only gets worse the more the years go by. Great puppetry (Jabba) and costume design (royal guards) but the magic was gone.

The Phantom Menace: 1/5 - Sterile test-tube baby
Attack of the Clones: Never seen it, and probably never will
Revenge of the Sith: Never seen it, and probably never will

The Force Awakens: Not yet seen. And have not yet decided if I’m going to. Please, convince a grumpy old fart if he should?

We want you to be aware that we have no plans—now or in the future—to restore the earlier versions.

From your comments, which echo mine apart from jedi, as I like it, probably an age thing. If you’re going to see it,then see at as it’s supposed to be seen, on the big screen. That’s all I’m going to say.

I went with my dad to see TFA. My dad was 6 in '77 and saw it in all its glory, as well as the other two following. He has no respect for the prequels.

Then this past Saturday, my old man teared up and smiled seeing all the old characters return. You’ll won’t see these actors for very long, and it would be a motivating factor to see them return one last time in my opinion. The stars you grew up with.

Ha ha, that’s fantastic, I’m born in '71 myself. I loathed the very idea of a new film with the old cast a few years ago but I see so many positive responses lately I’m thinking about swallowing the bait…

Thanks guys
