If it takes place a long time ago, technically everybody is gone. I think Blue Oyster Cult has a song about this… but I know what you mean. If you leave off on a positive note, you just don’t have to think about the mortality of these characters.
True. Then there’s how Harrison wanted Han killed off in either Empire or Jedi. Guess it kind of helps to justify it that way.
A few more thoughts: I’ve noticed how this film mirrors the original - almost too much, in fact. I don’t know if this was what George’s idea was when he presented his rhyme and stanzas theory. Even the prequels were just a bit more subtle than that!
I also got the feeling that Kylo could easily blow people’s heads off in the torture chamber, kind of like a Scanner. He does look kind of like Cameron Vale. Am I the only one who sees it like that?
Also, I noticed Martha Jones was on Coruscant when they blew it up. That was pretty surprising.
