but then again, so are II and III.

Yes and no (I think). The cameras used for shooting II and III were only 1920:1080, yes. But I want to say that the vfx and the DI were done at actual 2k cinema resolution.

IMDB confirms that, but it seems kind of silly to have a DI in a higher resolution than your filmed portions. The 2011 OT is a different beast entirely, however.

Correct. The 2004 masters were only 1920:1080. One of the Lowry guys even specified this at a press conference for the dvd when someone asked if it was 2k. And that’s the master that’s still being used eleven years later. There was even a screening in Georgia last year of ANH IIRC, an actual DCP of the 2011 version.

Maybe I’m making a mountain out of a molehill. Maybe 1920 vs 2048 isn’t a massive difference. But I would think the outdated resolution combined with the '04 master’s other issues would be enough for LFL to finally start using a newer transfer (I put it that way because we know a newer one exists).

I got my Laserdiscs and a perfectly capable LD machine to enjoy the OT anytime I want. I am never selling them so they can piss off one way or the other, LOL.

I get that we may never see an official release of the originals. I can live with that if they just remaster the SE. The current transfer has to be one of the worst I have ever seen of any movie. ANH is particularly bad. I’ve been striving to bring it back to a viewable shape and that is damn hard. The changes I object to most strongly are the ones that break continuity and change the story. The rock in ANH, Greedo shooting at all, the hit or miss windows in Cloud City, the oversize door to Jabba’s Palace and Hayden as Anakin. I don’t mind a lot of the minor changes (in the version I am preparing I’m removing the ones I don’t like) or the additions. I can watch a version like that as long as some care is taken to restore it properly to a viewable color pallet. I don’t like Han looking like a lobster and it has ruined any enjoyment from watching the trilogy to either have the low quality SD GOUT or the miscolored DVD and BR sets. The despecialized editions are a step in the right direction and the scans of the 35mm prints are even closer yet.

Like so many others, I’ve awaited the release of original theatrical versions, at least of Star Wars (1977), on Blu-ray, but the Despecialized Edition might now be taking on a life of its own, creating an alternative universe of viewers with a specialized knowledge not just of the production discrepancies between the original and the altered versions but also of the many social, aesthetic, and philosophical implications. At some point, in other words, George Lucas and 20th-Century Fox might become bit players inserted into the original forum that was created right here.

30-40 minute break between movies; 2D “original” theatrical releases

2D “original” theatrical releases has been changed to 2D digitally remastered releases. It would have been too good to be true.

I am still curious though as to whether this will be DCPs of the 2011 version (which is based off the now ancient 2004 master) or if it will be the newer 4K version we’ve been hearing about.

The guy from the AMC theater chain has called it “the blu-ray cuts” for their marathon.

Nothing new without a fanfare, surely?

If you had a new mastering, or the theatrical cuts, you’d want your marketing department all over it!

Just FYI, some time in the last 24 hours Netflix has partially yanked the 2006 GOUT discs from their DVD service. They have been pulled from my queue and no longer show up in searches. The pages are still live but can’t be used to add the discs.

The relationship between GL, and Lucasfilm/Disney seems to have cooled recently, given GL’s interview from last week about the breakup, and JJ’s response to it. Let’s hope this increases the chances of a release of the OOT sometime soon.

If they ever decide to restore and release OOT they will announce it way in advance. Surprise release just doesn’t make sense from advertising perspective. So any kind of speculation and hoping is useless.

I know that Lucasfilm has given us no real reason to expect the unaltered versions anytime soon, but recently there has been a lot of hype generating around the Special Editions and demand to see the originals finally released again. Watchmojo’s youtube channel recently released a video detailing the “10 Worst Star Wars Special Edition Changes”, and Jeremy Jahns released a video discussing Harmy’s Despecialized Editions and how great they are. These videos have gotten over 400,000 and 200,000 views respectively. They must know by now that there is no doubt an enormous market for these films now more than ever.

“Because it makes good business sense” has been a valid argument since 1997. If anything, that argument is actually becoming less valid as time goes on, as the proportion of the Star Wars fanbase that has actually seen the Star Wars trilogy that started it all decreases.

Since Disney owns SW now and George is letting go, I think we’re in a better place than ever to hope for this. I do think we’ll see the original trilogy restored and released on blu-ray and internet digital release someday.

JJ Abrams recently has been restoring the 70s horror movie Phantasm, just because he’s a big fan of it. With somebody like him around, I would not be surprised if somebody like him cares enough to lobby for getting the original trilogy restored and released.

It will always make good business sense. There always has been and always will be a market for the unaltered films. Things we infinitely smaller followings have received releases in the past. The producer’s cut of Halloween 6 was released on bluray recently as the selling point for the Halloween box set, and in 2013 the original mixes of ZZ Top’s studio albums were released on CD for the first time since before they had been altered with new percussion in the late 1980s. There really is a market for almost everything, but especially Star Wars. Despecialized Edition has proven that there is a market for the OT. Whether the fact that there is money to be made will motivate Lucasfilm to them releasing the films is yet to be seen, however.

I don’t think the OOT will be released until the next decade, sometime after May 2020. Disney will wait until all of Fox’s distribution rights expire on the other movies, and they will simultaneously wait until the ST is over and dies down.

As much as Id like to think that this wont be the case, I have a feeling that this is what will happen in the end, provided of course that a OUT restoration is on the cards for the future.

I wouldn’t expect anything more from a company whose mascot is plague-ridden vermin.
