I finally saw this, and joined the forum to thank you for all your work, it is now my favorite version of Star Wars. I read the whole thread, I didn't see addressed, right before John Barry's credit, there is a distorted credit, can you fill me in with what the story is behind this? Thank you!

So, there is some weirdness with the mastering of Puggo Grande and Puggo Strikes Back that I just noticed. Here’s what MediaInfo gives back for color information:

MediaInfo

Color primaries : BT.601 PAL
Transfer characteristics : BT.470 System B, BT.470 System G
Matrix coefficients : FCC 73.682

Kind of weird for an NTSC DVD to have PAL primaries and transfer characteristics and an old-ish NTSC color matrix, isn’t it?

Any news on this Puggo? Was this just an oversight in TMPGEnc or something?

Does anyone know if there have been English subs created that match up with Puggo Grande?

Not out of the box, but if you download Project Threepio, there are some Perl scripts and a README file you can use to convert the subtitles to versions that work with Puggo Grande and Puggo Strikes Back. The trick is you need to merge all the VOB files into a single file, and the subs will sync with that.

I’ll PM you a link.

By the way, when Puggo says how surprised he is that anyone actually wants to watch his projects, now I kinda know how that feels. That’s actually the second request I’ve gotten today for subtitles for Puggo’s projects.

With Puggo Strikes Back, at least, I had ended up having to manually fix the subs (even the ones labeled 16mm) using SubtitleEdit, even after merging all the vobs and removing the trailer at the beginning of it. That said - it’s really amazing how much better the Project Threepio subs are than the standard ones. Much thanks to CatBus and Puggo for making this experience possible!

FWIW, and I think it’s mentioned in the README, none of the subtitles sync with Puggo out-of-the-box. All of the SRT files, even the 16mm one (which refers to the soundtrack variant, not Puggo’s particular release), are GOUT-synced and designed for 23.976 fps. I think I’ll just mark that SRT file simply “mono” in the future, now that it looks like there probably isn’t a different 8mm mono variant.

You have to pass them through a Perl utility to make them sync, and even then, the only ones that’ll work easily are the NTSC DVD ones due to the framerate difference. If you’re using SRT files, post-conversion, you’ll still have to change the framerate from 23.976 to 29.97, or inverse-telecine the video back from 29.97 to 23.976. Oh, and the subtitles assume you leave the trailer in place, but only subtitle the feature.

But I’m glad you got it working a different way. This info is mostly for anyone else who’s curious.

Can you PM me this script as well? I’d like to compare results. I didn’t read the README, so didn’t know that the one labelled 16mm wouldn’t work out of the box. Thanks again!

Yeah, I’m usually the one yelling RTFM, the irony of which is not lost on me 😃

Just re-watched this for my Trilogy watchthrough…but on the xbr960 upscaled to 1080i…
Holy crap!

You all know my complete adoration for the PG, but for the first time I felt like I was actually running the print itself! The PS3 upscaler is pretty good paired with the 960’s 1080i res, and here the PG just shined. Yes, even better than when I projected it. (Used a midmodel Epson IIRC) The colors and densities come across far better due to this magical tube, and even the set’s big issue with phosphor lag wasn’t an issue. And the sound has far more detail to it than I realized…or it may be the fact that I have old Klipsch bookshelfs which can accentuate the highs at times.

Has anything ever come up about actually doing an HD or higher quality file version for PG and PSB without the DVD5 formatting? IIRC Harmy suggested this when going over some untouched PSB shots. And since there were some correction done to PSB…perhaps a Super Puggo Wars might be in order… 😉

Hands down the one thing that makes me feel 7 years old again besides the radio drama. And this comes from an owner of both the Technidisc and JSC. (And I love those too.)

Sorry I’ve been out of the loop for a while. Semester just ended and my grades are due on Jan 4. I’ll thereafter be returning to the land of the living. Still have to check out bilditup1’s questions…

I just clicked on the links to all three 16mm prints on ebay and realized that I looked at all of those a week or so ago and then totally forgot about them.
