I just checked, and I can’t find it anywhere on MySpleen. Is it named something particular? I’d really love to watch it.

I checked, it’s there as Harmy’s Return of the Jedi Working Copy V2.0.

On Myspleen, it should be listed under ‘Harmy’s Return of the Jedi Working Copy v2.0’
Not to derail the discussion, but is there a thread here that specifies how to calibrate an LCD tv for those of us planning to marathon the OT? I was able to successfully burn SW 2.5 and Empire 2.0 without any coasters so far and then I’m gonna have the Jedi workprint ready alongside them so I figure we might as well know these things for whom it may concern. 😄

Thanks, I was just searching under the wrong name. Sorry my bad! Looks good by the way!

Generally you want the brightness lower and the contrast higher so whites shine through and darks aren’t crushed completely. I just calibrated my roommate’s TV that he uses as a second monitor for his stationary laptop with this website (http://www.lagom.nl/lcd-test/) but I’m not sure how useful it will be to you. Try to find something similar or pause the movie and alter the settings on a frozen frame.

I watched the ROTJ workprint last night in my living room from a 55" TV and then I saw some comments here about the Rancor scene being too dark. I think I need to re-watch that because I didn’t notice anything (or it’s got something to do with my TV’s brightness / contrast settings). Other than that… awesome stuff, thanks!

Many TV’s are too bright out-of-the-box, you’d need a calibrated set to be certain. Many of the Rancor shots seem too dark to me (but of course, I have no reference), but the one where it’s probably easiest to explain is the brief shot after Jabba says “They will all pay…” of the dead Rancor and the crying keeper. The keeper is being comforted by another character in dark clothes, and that character is practically a black hole.

Got the ROTJ 2.0 Workprint, very happy to see it before TFA in a few days, thank you for that! I went ahead and demuxed the video file and fixed the noticeable subtitle flash frames and glitches around the 14:30-15:00 mark in Premiere then re-exported in the same or higher bitrate. I also went ahead and covered up the timecode on the bottom left, if anyone wants my version to enjoy let me know and I’ll post a link.

You didn’t happen to patch the R2 Swiss Army knife with the 2004 HD, did you?

Also, since you’re new here I will point out: Don’t post the link in this thread, use PM.

Also, also: Harmy has generally been okay with people re-encoding his work, but it might be polite to ask him anyway since he is seeking feedback on this one. That said, everything you’ve fixed is stuff we’ve heard about multiple times, and you obviously did it for your own viewing pleasure.

Haha, no I did not, I haven’t even watched the whole thing yet, I just was re-rendering this one so my wife and I (and maybe some friends) could watch it without timecode. I saw the subtitle glitches mentioned and quickly found and fixed with masking from next/last frames. What part of the film are you referring to, timecode wise?

Edit: I think I found where you’re talking about, R2 @ 1:42:24. I can definitely make that fix and re-render. And yeah, I’m not trying to step on Harmy’s toes or anything, obviously a huge fan, just saw some things I could fix for my own viewing. I can share but I won’t post a public link here.

I don’t have the film on me. When R2 is zapped as Han and Leia are trying to get into the bunker, he flies back and his appendages all fly out. Harmy only patched one of the two shots.

Yup, fixing that right now actually.

I watched this earlier today on my 42" calibrated TV. I didn’t really notice that many problems.
Around when the Emperor arrives on the Death Star, the music sounded kinda funny, like a slight phaser effect or something. The biggest problem I noticed was R2-D2 around the 1:42 mark - his chroma layer looked fairly offset. Also, like others have mentioned, scenes with low lighting came out very dark, almost to the point of obscuring details. None of these detracted from my viewing experience, however, and allowed me to finish my Star Wars marathon on a good note.

Just repeat to yourself “It’s just a film, I should really just relax”

Yeah, there’s a lot of little weird audio things that happen in ROTJ, and if you’re talking about what I think you are, that’s one of them. I’m afraid all of the audio sources have them, to some degree. That’s a “warts and all” preservation for you 😉

Hi Harmy,

This message to say a huge thank you ! My Star Wars marathon ended tonight with your workprint. It was amazing to watch SW2.5, ESB2.0 and ROTJ2.0WP with my wife before TFA. You are part of Star Wars History for sure !

Can’t wait to be in the theatre tomorrow. Long live Star Wars, long live the Despecialized Editions !

Easy for you to say.

EDIT: Dang your post-edits, Gimli, now my comment makes even less sense than before.

Thanks for all your hard work Harmy! ROTJ on VHS was my favorite of the Trilogy, and you have made it great again!

Yeah I’ve brought up the “wind tunnel” occurring during the Emperor’s arrival before. The music is actually a hodgepodge of 3 different cues, and NONE of the source material has that flanging, phasing in and out effect. That tells me that it luckily didn’t happen at the scoring sessions, but at some point when being mixed down for God-knows how many prints were going to be produced. I have yet to experience ANY copy of that part of the film that this is fixed. It drives me nuts as an “audio guy”, but unfortunately it was used as the master for umpteen million releases, even the BD. If it were up to me and I knew how to work with video, I would assemble the track and put it in the film. But, it is what it is. Something happened in mastering and mixing that made the speed of the film change slightly from the sound going on at the same time or vice versa. So yes, Ben Burtt makes mistakes like everyone else.

Here’s the Wikipedia page about flanging, and there is a sample to play as well.

I finished my edits of ROTJ 2.0 Workprint and, with Harmy’s blessing, have uploaded it for sharing. If you’d like a link just PM me. May the force be with you all on this wonderful week!

To me that wiki sample of flanging has this cool ominous sound - any chance it could have been done on purpose in that scene?

Jesus, that’s a huge improvement - how did you do it? If there’s something I still feel like I have A LOT to learn about, then it’s color correction - would this be possible to replicate in AE?
Here’s what the raw scan looks like:

and what you see in the BD vs LPP comparison is the best I was able to get out of it.

No, not a chance. That music was not designed to be heard like that, as evidenced by the soundtrack albums and collections themselves. If it happened that way on the CD, LP, cassette, reel to reel, or 8-Track, then there would be no issue. Although I must admit it still would sound out of place if it was meant to sound that way. I just wish there was a print somewhere that didn’t have it. But even if they existed then, they likely wouldn’t exist now.

Maybe slightly off-topic but I’m making Harmy DVDs for my dad for Christmas. For ROTJ, would you guys recommend v1.0 or is the workprint complete enough for now? I know the video quality is supposed to be much better in the WP.

I appreciate any opinions!

IMO – and it pains me to say it – 1.0 is better for general-purpose enjoyment than the 2.0WP. The missing subtitles can be fixed, but the crazy wrong R2 freakout just wrecks it, worse than blurry eyebrows. For my own purposes – like a lot of people here, it seems – I’ve made a mashup of the workprint with 1.0 spliced in at a few key points. I’m confident the second workprint or final release of 2.0, whatever’s next, will be clearly better than 1.0 in every respect. The first workprint very nearly is.
