Cool. I'll dig around to see where those other soundtracks are. And I think I'll have to re-encode the Gerhardt ESB soundtrack, the ones I have on my PC are at 128kbps mp3, and I don't think that's decent enough fidelity, honestly.

I'll get at both you and Zion about this pretty soon.

If you really care about the Gerhardt albums so much (they are wonderful, but as separate listening experiences, they will never match up to the films, nor should they) I have the English Star Wars album and the original Return of the Jedi rerecordings he did for RCA. These are better than the 1990 reissues because they are the original stereo mixes and not the Dolby Surround remasters. The originals sound better. What do these have to do with DVDs though?

Neil

Well at least the reversed surround channels have been addressed.

"What do these have to do with DVDs though?"

Everything, if I am going to put them ON the DVDs.

I love listening to the soundtrack by itself - It wouldn't have to match up to the video perfectly, and there could be a recommendation on the menu to turn off one's TV for that particular soundtrack option.

And Bizzle, uncompressed WAVs would be nice, if at all possible. (I know how big the file sizes can get.) My original AC3 was made out of necessity, not personal preference (plus it was a case of "can I do this?". )

Wow, so much discussion here since I left for the evening. It's nice to see this place alive and kicking again for a change.

Bizz, I'd really like to hear these soundtracks you mentioned. What I plan on putting on my own discs is a 5.1 track, isolated score, commentary, and possibly a mono track. If you want to help out with any of those, I'd more than welcome your assistance. Shoot me a pm sometime.

Wouldn't it be just as easy to put on a CD? Those recordings were never meant to be played to picture. Many of the pieces are concert versions which in some cases are not in the movie, or in others combine disparate parts of the film. Maybe they'd be good for menu screens, but since DVD space is at a premium, if it were me, I'd devote all the space to getting the best picture and the best sound on one disc and leave the re-recorded albums off.

I remember once reading how Rick McCallum was so intrigued about everything that DVD could do, that he could have a silent version of the movies on DVD to show the importance of sound. I guess he never thought of turning down the volume.

Well, yeah

BUT: I was thinking maybe in the authoring, maybe Zion or MeBe could either a) make it so you can jump to the scenes those tracks are on specifically, kind of like how some commentaries are only for certain scenes on some tracks. I think there's some captures of the Def LD's that do that for the Def commentaries, since they're so sparse, or b) do it like the Superman DVD, where there's simply a menu page that allows you to hear select deleted cues accompanied by still images. If there's an image gallery, maybe you can select what track will play underneath them, or just select which cue you want to hear and the DVD will essentially BE the CD.

Obviously, Gerhardt's concert arrangements would play along with the scene pretty roughly, not screen specific, but it'd be a decent special feature to listen along to the alternate recordings.

but you do have a good point--ideally, these would all be dual layered DVD's. Image quality will only take up so much room when being captured from a LD source, so you could max out the audio tracks and not hurt the image pretty easy. Plus, you get into the whole "internet stealing" thing, because if you don't stick them on an isolated score track that attempts to play along with the movie, you're essentially getting a free copy of a CD that's still available for purchase. With these isolated scores, it's at least re-edited to play EXACTLY with the movie, deleted cues and all, so it's an experience you CAN'T get on a CD. But in this case, it gets iffy, because this is essentially just spreading out an existing CD on a DVD, no changes or edits at all.

So now that this SW disc is going to be out there, what would you guys think of offering up ESB and ROTJ to Rik or MeBe for distribution among this little community?

Or to hiphats...I'd like to see this too.

P.S. Null in this case is slang for "answer back".

I think most people (select few excluded ) would love to see all three movies in this version...but if Neil and The Biz arent gonna share cause they told the authors of the disc that they wouldnt spread it around then I can respect the whole 'honor amongst thieves'.

If however someone that doesnt mind sharing gets ahold of these discs and gets the to Rikter or someone to torrent them, then you'll hear no complaints from me.

But in the mean time Ill just wait (im)patiently for Zion's and MeBeJedi's versions to come out

Like Bizzle, I also had strict instructions that no copies of this set were to be made, nor to mention who the creators were. Although I think it's a wonderful set and everyone should have it, it's not the wish of the creators. I find it more than a little lacking in consideration for someone not to honor that request.

With that said, yes, this set is really good. The isolated scores are nothing short of genius. Many loving hours went into doing these discs and it shows.

BTW, there's two revisions of the ANH disc for this set also. The other disc has different menus and options for the mono, Dolby Stereo and matrixed 6 channel.

Don't worry, Dr. Gonzo. I'm sure somewhere out there, in the far away heavens of the Earth, there will be someone else such as MeBeJedi (or even myself) that will do their own "definitive" DVD-R versions of the original incarnations of the trilogy that they won't mind sharing, simply because there will always be those fans who will continue to try their hand at preserving the Star Wars films as we originally saw them in theatres.

Heck, I've even preserved the 1997 Special Editions on DVD-R for historical reference, warts and all, even though they themselves have been superceded by the 2004 versions.

I'm curious as to why three people here have the whole set. Are the creators friends of yours or friend of a friend or what?

Believe me, I totally understand the honor amongst thieves thing. I've adhered to the same request to keep things to myself before. But I'm just curious as to why someone would take so much time and put so much care (it seems) into a really wonderful set and then not want it distributed?

I used to be very active on this forum. I’m not really anymore. Sometimes, people still want to get in touch with me about something, and that is great! If that describes you, please email me at [my username]ATgmailDOTcom.

Hi everybody. You’re all awesome. Keep up the good work.

Well, it's sort of the same thing as Mverta's decision not to distribute his. He's putting more work into his stuff than a lot of people have, and yet he's not going to make it available at all, either.

"and matrixed 6 channel."

Do you have any specifics on that?

"I'm just curious as to why someone would take so much time and put so much care (it seems) into a really wonderful set and then not want it distributed?"

Well, to be quite honest, when you've put as much time, effort and money into these projects as I or Laserman or Gonzo or any of the other handful of people who have done this, it's kinda hard to just "let it go". While internet notoriety is a nice thing, it doesn't completely make up for the "family time" that was missed, or the bills that need to be paid. I still kinda shake my head when people complain about having to spend more than 5 bucks on one of these versions. They just don't get the fact that you cannot simply "rip-&-burn" LD versions like you can another DVD. It is apples to oranges, big time. I thought I would have been done with my versions at least a year ago, if not more, but better technology and techniques keep coming my way, which has required even more time and money. As I've said a couple of times, unlike the Studios, I don't have the volume for cost-effective economy of scale. Selling a DVD for 5 bucks does nothing to amortize the money I've put into this project (close to $2,000, and Laserman has spent more than me.)

I still intend to put a verion on BitTorrents, but don't believe that the thought of holding on to it (like mverta) or selling it on Ebay (though I'm too chicken) hasn't crossed my mind for various reasons.

[EDIT] I guess that's just the Capitalist in me.

As for myself, I'm kinda one of those people who transfer from LD-to-DVD (or even VHS to DVD) using the simple things, and though not the Hollywood-style job most people do with their LD-to-DVD or VHS-to-DVD transfers, it's something. I take the LaserDisc or tape signal and feed it to my TV Tuner inside my PC, then use InterVideo WinDVR to record, TMPG Encoder to convert the file to a DVD-compliant picture, DVDIt! to author and burn to hard drive, and then either Sonic RecordNow DX or InstantCopy to burn to DVD-R. Of course, I don't have the software to do the DVD-R in Dolby Digital AC-3 (it can only do PCM audio), but at least it's the cost-efficient way of transferring LDs or tapes to DVD-Rs if you can't afford the money to do a top-notch job. Now you know how I did the 1997 Special Editions and the individual making-of documentaries.

And as I mentioned before, I don't mind sharing my work with others so long as they have at least some digital archive of the versions of the Star Wars movies Lucas doesn't want on video anymore.

I got my copies in a trade. I don't know who made the set, but I'm thankful that I have it. I didn't know until I came here that it was such an exclusive set.

I do have a Star Wars disc that I'll be more than happy to share. If only Rikter would get back to me.

Wow, this set sounds terrific! Ah... will the Star Wars goodness never end?

I have a set of the Fox '89 Widescreen Trilogy with the same soundtrack so I'm not in a mad rush to check this disc out, although it would be really cool.

But Doc just mentioned some revisions and I just want to be sure theat the new sound options are still of the same sound mix right?

Bizzle and I got our copies through the original creators. As far as sharing, I have inklings as to why they would not want to have these shared, but nothing official.

In danger of breaking my break from this forum (sorry couldn't help myself entering this thread, I haven't gone into any others excepting to read my own posts), I have a couple of things to say. The Bizzle and Dr_Gonzo were instructed not to make copies of the set by the creators of the set.

I find such things hard to swallow. For instance, a friend of mine committed an act of vandalism last year, where he removed and destroyed private property. He then told me not to tell anyone. Of what authority does he have to say that to me? I mean I should have told the police outright. And it wasn't because he's my friend that I didn't. Heck I mean he shouldn't be the one to dictate who should know the truth, I really should have told the police. Next time I will, that time I was in the wrong too (for not telling the police).

I know distributing Star Wars bootlegs is not the same thing, however people should realize at least that it is the property of Lucas/LucasFilm. Therefore whatever creators of sets have to say about their distribution shouldn't matter. What Lucas says should matter most, and then what other people say should matter less. Not because Lucas deserves to dictate, but because he owns the copyright. If someone else breaches his copyright - as we all have done - then they/we do not have any authority to claim others shouldn't do it also. Because that is saying "do as I say, not as I do".

I know I've said that before, but I just wanted to give it a fresh run. I would like to hear what others think about this too.
