As you might see from the last few posts, the current circulating version of Jedi is a workprint. It has a (nearly invisible) frame counter for the sake of providing feedback. It also has an extra ‘warning’ type thing during the Fox logo, and a few minor errors. I wouldn’t burn it unless you need to in order to watch. But you can still work on your menus while you wait for the real release.

I think you’ll find that ‘Final’ is a tricky word around here. There’s no telling with certainty how long projects will go on. But if you end up burning the 2.5 (or 2.0) copies, you’ll certainly have a clean, polished trilogy. Just back up your project files for creating your disc menus in case you want to update in the years to come.

A workprint for the upcoming version 2.0 of ROTJ is currently making the rounds. It’s more or less a test and feedback kinda thing. But, the finished v2.0 will be done as soon as Harmy can make it happen within his schedule. If I were you, I’d wait for 2.0 to make a label and burn a BD with.

Thanks for the prompt responses! With that in mind, I’ll just wait for the next version of Jedi to burn onto a disk. Thanks again!

Acknowledging that current version is a workprint that most are choosing to not burn onto a disk, I decided to try creating a BD anyway since I’d like to watch this version with some friends.

For whatever reason, the BD creation with tsMuxeR (2.6.12) results in files that are not functioning correctly. MPC-HC will start playing the video, but freezes if you try to change anything (skip to another track time, enable subtitles, etc.). BD players won’t even open the file, saying that it’s not supported.

Confirmed that I’m able to make functioning BD folders from the official MKV’s for SW (v2.5) and ESB (v2.0), so this seems to be an issue limited to ROTJ (v2.0 workprint). Not sure if there’s something off about the file itself, or if I’m doing something wrong, but I thought I should go ahead and raise awareness to this potential issue.

So, you guys remember this?

Well, hold on to your hats, because I finally got my hands on a scan of reel 3 from an LPP print and here’s a comparison with the Blu-Ray:

http://screenshotcomparison.com/comparison/153998

The difference is shocking!

By the way, this problem is present pretty much exactly throughout the second half of reel three and definitely ends precisely with the last shot of reel 3 and since the negative is actually split into smaller ten-minute reels, it definitely points to them just mucking up the scanning of what would be reel 6 of the negative and instead of re-scanning with proper focus, they just threw a sharpening filter at it.

This is absolutley shocking indeed. The reel scan looks like a promo shot. Awesome!!

Looks amazing! Thank you for the work you did to restore the original masterpieces. Is there a donation to this site I can do for the excellent work you did via paypal or something?

Harmy, will you be able to include the 16mm mono mix from Puggo like in ESB 2.0?

AFAIK the sound mix on Puggo’s 16mm print is just a fold down of the stereo mix. The mono mix on Star Wars and Empire were unique in their content and were worth including. Perhaps his print does have a unique mix, but no one can verify it since Puggo hasn’t released it yet.

That’s exactly what I’d like to find out! Can’t wait for both to be released.

The existence of the 16mm mono mix on PSB was a surprise to me, I’m holding out hope for a similar surprise in ROTP, but I admit it’s probably not likely.

Isn’t it similar to the 70mm?

I don’t know about the 70mm, but the biggest differences I can remember between the Mono and the Stereo mix are the following:

  • the voice announcing “The First Transport is away” is different and is shifted in time.
  • You can hear C-3PO arguing louder and more clearly with Chewbacca when they’re entering the Freezing Chamber.

I’m sure there’s other stuff as well, but I can’t remember. I do have a L/R comparison MP3 lying around somewhere if you’re interested.

This list includes the 70mm audio changes (first transport being one of them) https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1vhUSuVBoA_EPo97_qGRW5u_Hw7IAbpexg7uS7vVV3Hs/edit#gid=6

edit: Sorry, Harmy. We’ve officially drifted off topic. But if anyone isn’t familiar with that comprehensive list of changes, it’s a valuable link for each of the films.

Is there a possibility of getting a single file for ROTJ?

I want to ideally avoid having to get up and click on parts 1-15.

Is there a way around this such as autoplay?

I’ve tried ‘right click’ --> play all, with VLC before, but it wouldn’t work.

Are you not aware of what a rar is? It is basically like a zip that is split across files (for various reasons, classically used to fit a large file across lots of smaller media, etc.), you’ll need to extract it so as to see the .mkv container file (which is a single file, as you’re hoping for). Just open the first file with an archive extracting program, like 7-zip or winrar or whatever works for you, and it’ll read in the other 14 files automatically and let you extract the full archive. There’ll also be a password to enter before it will let you extract it, and I’m not sure if harmy wants the password mentioned here, so I won’t point it out specifically without his permission, but it should have been stated wherever you got the download links.

The workprint looks great! Although one thing that stands out is that it is noticeable whenever a shot switches to the 35mm source. I think the colors look a tad different when it switches. Will this be corrected in the final 2.0 version?

It will probably stay the same, and be worked on more in the v.2.5 release.

Though the 35mm shots may stay the same, he suggested that the rest of the footage just has the 1.0 color for the workprint and may be updated.

There’s a glitch that pittrek mentioned on page 63, that I get the feeling might have been overlooked (no-one else has mentioned it). At frame 21552 (via bottom-left counter), there is a big glitch just after the subtitles fade out.

Author

It’s not been overlooked - in fact that was the 1st glitch I noticed even before releasing the workprint but since, like I said, all subtitles will be redone for v2.0, it’s quite irrelevant 😉

That’s strange. You could try first demuxing all the tracks with MKVextract first and then remuxing them in TS MUxer.

There are also some options that you can use, like “do not insert [some abbreviation I don’t understand]” that fixes other film muxes for me.

Just want to say that having watched this all the way through last night on a better TV than I was using the other day, my problems with the 35mm stuff that I mentioned were far less noticeable.
