Harmy's RETURN OF THE JEDI Despecialized Edition HD - V3.1 — Page 64

Thanks all for the constructive criticism. I will probably try to stabilize the worst shots for v2.0 - the problem is that sometimes the stabilizing algorithms go haywire when there’s a lot of movement on different planes in the shot, so it’s not always easy - the final shot before the credits is one of those and it’s missing a big chunk in the SE, so I can’t use that but I’ll see what else I can do. Also, for v2.5, I should also already have the full 4K scan (only had the first reel and the eyebrow scene for this version), so a lot of the current 35mm stuff may be replaced completely.

As for the recomps - I will try to replace all of them, including Obi-Wan, in v2.5, when I have time to give stabilization and cleanup proper attention.

I’ve sent Harmy a subtitle file that will patch over the missing alien subtitles in the workprint. If anyone wants it before he makes it generally available, PM me. You will not be able to use this subtitle file and also watch using other subtitles. There’s a SUP file which should blend pretty seamlessly with the film, and an SRT file for people who can’t use the SUP file.

OK, so when applying my own resynchronized French subtitles with time-codes based on frames, I’ve noticed what will also cause audio sync issues : there are 2 moments with frame differences between this new workprint and v1.0.

  • The 1st one is a 2-frame difference that occurs at frame 68664 or 68666 (frame number noted from VirtualDubMod). The very end of the spaceship shot right before you see the 2 guys walking down the corridor.

  • The 2nd one is a 1-frame difference that occurs at frame 141781 or 141782 (frame number noted from VirtualDubMod). The very end of the shot where you see trees lying on the ground, right before you see an Ewok running away from stormtroopers right on his tail.

Maybe it’s the same thing like before, when the GOUT PAL DVD is different in frame count than the GOUT NTSC DVD. Anyway, I don’t know wich frame count was used for the audio tracks on v1.0. Was it out of sync then and will it be right on this time? Or is it the other way? You guys are the ones to adress to about that stuff. I’m just the reporting guy.

The 1.0 version used PAL GOUT frames, and it looks like you’ve just confirmed the 2.0 workprint uses NTSC frames as planned. This was by design, and should fix more sync issues than it causes. The audio for 1.0 was largely NTSC-synced.

This reminds me - I’ll need to start collecting all the audio tracks for the final v2.0 release - so how do I get hold of the best quality NTSC synced audio versions of all the available tracks for Jedi? I will conform the commentaries myself, as usual, but I’ll need everything else.

I will send you a big-ass PM with the dubs.

Awesome! Thanks!
Now what about h_h’s 5.1 and theatrical stereo in DTS-HD? Anyone got those? Also, a music only track? Am I forgetting something?

Author

I have lossless DTS-HD English tracks (1983 5.1, 1983 stereo, 1993 stereo), with caveats. New files from h_h would be better. I think I may even have a lossy isolated score track around that would do in a pinch. I’ll just send what I’ve got, and let you know what the problems are. I’ll have to upload some of these, so there may be a delay.

I checked my promotional tab and the email wasn’t there. Can someone please pm me the link? Sorry to be a pest. 😦

Okay, I think I’m a pretty easy reviewer, I don’t have doubleofive’s gallery memorized or anything. On the other hand, I don’t watch this particular film as much as the others, so there may be things I spotted that have always been there 😉

2:06 death star moves as screen pans down (was it always like this?)
5:29 matte paining extension still there?
Alien subtitles have not been updated to match theatrical timing and appearance
14:16 missing subtitle “I have come for the bounty…”
Some Rancor shots seem a little too dark (they always had crap black levels, I think you may have overcompensated here)
27:38 missing subtitle “Bring me Solo and the Wookiee.”
27:41 missing subtitle “The will all suffer for this outrage.”
30:34-30:36 vertical line on sarlacc shot
1:42:25 sparky the circus droid
2:04:45 35mm footage is awfully shaky
2:06:19 35mm footage a little shaky
visible damage to credits on the following frames:
182773,183073,183117,183796,184045,184572,184740,184926,185158,186008,186251,187002
187239,187372,187522,187561,187645,187665,187677,187702,187713,187779,187787,187818
187905,187930,188205,188449,188800,188855,188919,188944-188947,189099,189135,189202
189266,189282,189374,189379,189380,189392

post-credits: “bought” is spelled wrong 😉

credits damage is a “blink and you miss it” or a “watch the wrong part of the screen and you miss it” scenario, so I’m sure I didn’t even get half of them

Well, the credits are sourced from 35mm and are on the tail end of a reel, so there will be some damage - I’m not going to go through them and paint out every little piece of dirt 😃 You should see what they looked like before I touched them up. 😉

I understand. I just wanted to give you all the frames so you could look through them and assess severity/difficulty for yourself. Some of them are pretty bad and (to someone who knows nothing about video) also look pretty easy.

What are you using to clean them?

Yes.

Nope. This is the regular big door. Not the supersized door.

Harmy, I haven’t had a chance to download & check out the workprint yet, but by the feedback alone I’m extremely excited! Thanks as always for your tireless work & efforts on your projects/passions. We are all eternally grateful!

Harmy do you know of any ETA on when 2.0 will be done? I know it probably won’t be before TFA, but I’m just curious.

Hey Harmy,

I’m sure you’re already aware of this, but there is a closeup of Luke on the Tatooine Skiff that looks worse than a TeleSync. It only lasts a few seconds, but man does it shock the eyes!

It’s really sad when the “creative minds” behind something we hold dear are also guilty of its destruction.

Looks amazing! Only thing that really stuck out to me and someone has already mentioned was swiss army knife R2 at the bunker on Endor 01:42:18:19

‘Could you be… more specific?’

Is it a despecialized shot?

Harmy: Have you gotten a better source for the “At last we have the mighty Chewbacca” shot, that you originally did some neat smoke effects for to mask the GOUT? I know you dropped 1.0 shots in for most of the subtitles in the workprint. So, not sure if it will be upgraded.
