Color looks great. Worst part of RoTJ, IMO, is Han’s skin tone in some select shots. Have you done the ‘you’re gonna die here you know?’ or the ‘he’s my brother’ scenes yet, to remove his terrible and transient sunburn?
I’m sure it’s been mentioned before, but for some reason I’d always thought that the purplish cast in the 04/11SE was just somebody getting a wild hair that the colors should look totally dreadful and nobody speaking up to say maybe they shouldn’t. The video linked below, to me, indicates that the purplish cast may have been an attempt to re-create the colors of the “THX” home video releases, rather than theatrical colors like the 97SE.
Top clip is Japanese Special Collection (pre-THX), bottom clip is Definitive Collection (THX):

Maybe this isn’t news to anyone else here. But apparently purple faces have been with us for a long time, not that this makes them look any better. Also, the Japanese Special Collection had pretty good colors, but that’s not a surprise to anyone.
OK, so I started working on CC of Jedi - I haven’t gotten very far yet but here are some screenshot comparisons:

Right now, I’m pretty much only going for fixing the mistakes of the BD coloring - I might give it another pass using the scans I’ll get as a reference but that would probably be left for v2.0.
One other thing I wanted to mention is that I found ROTJ to be extremely noisy - more so than the other two (I notice these quality problems much more now that I’m looking at in on a large 4K screen) and also the crushed black are just completely unrecoverable in some scenes. But the noisiness is interesting, because the movie bears clear signs of having tons of automatic grain removal applied, which would never leave so much noise in it, so I figure some of it must be added on top and then I was comparing the BD to a few ProResHQ 422 clips from the original master from which the BD was made (don’t ask me where I got those and I’ll tell you no lies - but they are just three very short clips) and I noticed something interesting:
http://s25.postimg.org/olq4fyubx/Pro_Res.jpg
The noise (exaggerated in that screenshot for better visibility) that is in the image overlaps into the black bars, which is only possible, if it was added on top of the picture.
The stars were BLUE? Jeeze, Harmy, just when I thought the Blu-rays couldn’t have been shoddier.
…and that was my reaction before I saw the fake grain failing to align with the video frame.
Well, for the BD they added new black bars, so the noise isn’t outside the picture on the BD but this is encoded from the source file and there it clearly is.
As for the blue stars - all evidence suggests that the stars in ROTJ have always been blue but no as much as on the BD.
So if you’re fixing BD coloring mistakes, but you don’t have what you’re considering to be your final color references yet, how are you determining the mistakes? Are you just counteracting the purple, or are you doing something more complicated using color-boosted GOUT or something?
No, I’m basically just balancing the colors and getting rid of tints - you can pretty much see it in those comparisons.
Well it’s a great improvement even if it’s without a reference. And just in case I haven’t harassed you enough about this–if at some point you are sure you have theatrically-timed subs (different from 1.x), even if it’s incomplete with ugly-looking placeholder subs and a crap 240p 2Mbps encode, I’d still like to see that. The appearance of the subs is nice to know too, but it’s the change in timing that’s going to give me the bulk of my work. And just to dangle this in front of you: Jabba the Hutt speaking Thai. It is awesomely awkward.
I really should go to bed now but remind me of this in a PM tomorrow - I think I may already have what you seek 😉

Testing.
Dear Harmy,
I’m trying to access myspleen to download the despecialized version of RoJ. But alas I find myself unsuccessful. Would you kindly be able to help me? Thanks! I loved epsiodes IV & V! I didn’t know so much technical experience was needed to do film editing of this nature.
Dear tvu1986,
You need an invite to access Myspleen, but if you google “harmy return of the jedi despecialized torrent”, you should be able to find it on other torrent sites pretty easily.
Thanks for sharing the video / update on ROTJ, Harmy!
Totally understand waiting. Personally, I’m not at all sad that a 2.x won’t be ready by next month. I am very, very happy to have the versions that we do, thanks to all the hard work you’ve already done.
It will already be a far more pleasant viewing experience than my 2006 DVDs. The DarkJedi DVDs were good for their time, but it’s SO much nicer to have these versions you’ve done, for even better viewing on an HDTV set.
Random note, it was thinking to myself about making my own non-anamorphic DVDs that set me on the path of being here. I thought “surely, somebody else has fixed these DVDs up to better standards.” Sure enough, many were already very far ahead of me, haha.
It’s great news to hear that you’ll have some great scans to work from. Can totally wait for this 😄
Hi Harmy, it might be a good idea to edit the first post of this thread as it still says that people should look for myspleen invites on that defunct invite thread. Isn’t the official line now to send people to myspleen’s own forum for invites?
What Star Wars quote will make people like me?
Nice to see that work has been -somewhat- resumed on this project, Harmy! The color correction screenshots looks great, that crawl really pops 😃 The corrected colors definetely look more vintage! I watched the YT-clip
and the info regarding ROTJ sounded very promising.
“Stargazing wizards, stare into the night,
Hurricanes and blizzards, here comes the final fight”
Thank you Harmy for the update video on ROTJ.
I think you should place the link on the first post, so that every jackass who asks about when the project is done, or if you set any kind of release dates, will know what’s going on.
Hi there, first time poster here so apologies if this is a stupid and obvious question. I have downloaded the ROTJ and extracted the AVCHD folders and files. I understand these are meant to be burned to a DVD-DL but how can I watch it locally on my PC. I can see there is a video file in the streaming folder. Is that all I need to click and watch? I don’t need to mount the folder itself like an ISO?
Thanks alot and great work Harmy and everyone involved.

Cheers for the reply. I do have VLC but just to clarify, that is it yeah. I just need to watch the .m2ts file in VLC. The other files are only relevant for burning to DVD?

Mostly, yeah. The other files also have the chapter stops embedded and that’s potentially useful on any platform but the M2TS file is all of the audio and video.

Awesome. I’m just finishing up the Machete watching order so been looking forward to this. Excellent work, well done to Harmy and everyone that contributed 😃

Welcome to the forum!
Stay and contribute.
I’m so hyped for this now more than ever. Whatever Harmy ultimately does will be fantastic no doubt. Every despecialized edition has been fantastic, with each version improving things over the last. I’m especially more hyped than ever from playing Star Wars Battlefront and Endor looking absolutely gorgeous - which is an excellent reminder of how great ROTJ is - even more so when we hopefully get to see the original colours back with Harmy’s cc!
TehParadox.com didn’t have Chewtobacca’s DVD5 transfer. I wanted to put that on a DVD… Is it only on MySpleen? …cause that place scares me. Or maybe Chewie’s just waiting for Harmy’s updated print…?
