With the release of the new star wars movie only a month and days away, I think it’s time for AMC and other chains that use the digital Imax system to upgrade their projectors to laser and upgrade their seats to recliners for older theaters. The local AMC in Rockaway, NJ hasn’t been updated since the ticket kiosks moved from outside the theater to the cash register. Not only that but the tickets that print out are less thicker. The aspect ratio for the first Star Wars teaser in 3d attached to Hobbit 3 was preserved in the digital IMAX 3D showing. I saw teaser #2 to Avengers in regular 3d which looked a little blurry, then the 2D IMAX non aspect ratio version attached to Rouge Nation. The final trailer, which I saw with Spectre, showed the movie in scope ratio. The projection was kinda blurry but the image was bright and the surround sound is good but loud. Ticket sales for this movie are sold out on opening night for nearly all shows yet for the rest of the run of the movie they are still available. Maybe also an increase in PLF format screens…I know rockaway’s second largest auditorium is #9 with 360 seats. They should also do reserved seating. The last time i saw a star wars movie on the big screen was the 3D reissue of the Phantom Menace which was the first time I saw the 2011 print but converted for 3D and the CGI Yoda. Phantom Menace in 1999 i saw in clifton commons after its run on a 35mm print with analog sound, then attack of the clones in mansfield nj with dts sound which was good, and revenge of the sith in 2005 in succasunna with dolby digital sound. The original trilogy i saw in special edition form at AMC loews in wayne. The 1997 print of ANH had some lip sync issues which was corrected in the dvd and bluray reissues, then empire sounded great and jedi was OK. It’s a shame that TFA will not be shown in 35mm in North America and Canada yet poor countries will have it on film due to Disney’s long term commitment with Fotokem for most of its movies.
