Star Wars Episode I: Cloak Of Deception (Released) — Page 6

Thanks for the interest! Subtitles have been discussed in the past, but it would be a very large project that I don’t care to invest in. If there were a way to take the existing subtitle files, edit one of them to be correct, then be able to apply those changes to the other language tracks automatically, I’d probably do it. But it would take so much work and it’d only result in an English track. Not so special. And I haven’t heard of any fan edits with full subtitles tracks that aren’t in another language to begin with.
V4 will be the final iteration of this project. Episode I has been released in V4, through the torrents and Mega links found at FanEdit.info. Episodes II and III are awaiting the completion of Schorman’s HDTV preservation project in order to use it as the primary video source and bypass the BluRay transfer’s oddities. I don’t have a definite date, though Episode III shouldn’t be much longer, as it sounds like he’s about done with that one. However, don’t hesitate to download and enjoy V3 for II and III in the meantime; there’s nothing wrong with them or anything.
I don’t know how old your kids are, but I’d be interested in how they perceive all six films, but particularly anything related to changes made to the prequels. When my niece watched the films with us, she was challenged at school to a Star Wars trivia game, and she only missed one question. The question involved the circumstances of Padme’s death, which she insisted she was right about. Oops! Probably should have explained some of the differences to her afterward, though she did know she was watching a fan edit. Part of the benefit is being able to not think about the originals and enjoy them as their own thing.

Thanks for the fast response! I’ll confer with FanEdit.info to make sure I’m getting the right downloads, and I completely understand about the subtitles issue. Personally, I would be interested in English subtitles, but I understand that it would be a laborious task, with relatively few people really benefiting.

My boys are young (probably too young for SW, in some peoples’ opinions). The oldest is five, and he is really engaged in the movies so far. My three-year-old is enjoying it too, and he keeps asking when he’s going to see Darth Vader, but ever since that Dagobah dark side vision scene in ESB, he’s been somewhat apprehensive… perhaps it was too spooky for him. My two-year-old just really loves Yoda. 😃

I’ll be sure to share our impressions after we watch your edits, though I’m not expecting a sophisticated critique from my boys. Hopefully my wife and I can provide some more helpful feedback.

Honestly, I’m just so happy to be able to really enjoy all of this with my family. I really feel like Lucas did such a disservice to his fans, you (and others here) have really recovered something quite special for me. Thank you.

I plan on re-watching all the Star Wars movies in anticipation of episode VII. Seems like most people agree that your versions are the way to go (and then the despecialized versions of the OT).

I have a few questions though:

  1. Is there an easy way to identify which versions I have? I recently downloaded the 21GB 1080p versions from a popular torrent site, but now I’m afraid they are outdated. By the sounds of it, maybe I should re-download episode 1 through the link from fanedit.info, and then wait a couple of weeks for your updated episode 2 and 3’s (and maybe watch the V3’s depending on when V4’s are released).
  2. Do you recommend watching in episode order (1,2,3,4,5,6) or something like 4,5,1,2,3,6? The advantage of the second is it gives me more time to wait for your V4’s of 2 and 3.
  3. I found cover art in case I want to burn to disc. They all say “DVD” on the case art though, are you aware of any bluray artwork?

Thanks!

If it doesn’t have any hilarious comment at the bottom of the screen during the 20th Century Fox logo, it’s the most recent version. V4 also has the “short negotiations” line. Also, you can check the enclosed readme file.
As far as viewing order, I have no recommendation. My edits weren’t done with any intent on making the prequels more suitable to be seen first, or in any order. I’d advise making such a decision the same way you would with the actual films. (Personally, I lean toward release order, with machete order as a fun alternative.)
FE.org user OnlyOneKenobi did the cover artwork, and he’s been missing for quite a while. So I don’t have anything else other than what he provided. It’s very nice, though could use an expansion.

Thanks for the quick response. Turns out I have V3 of all 3 episodes. Pretty good, but knowing that there is a V4 for episode 1, I want it!

I went to fanedit.info and am now using jdownloader to get V4 of episode 1. It’s coming way faster than the torrent did so I regret not doing that in the first place.

I’m also ordering bluray writer for my computer so I’ll be able to copy them all to disc and play them anywhere. Is anybody aware of any guides on how to do that? Preferably with free software.

I might do some slight modifications to the DVD case images so they fit in a bluray case. If so I’ll share with everyone.

Ha! I like you already! I’m all for kids watching R rated movies (obviously not if inappropriate but otherwise…). I feel like being scared from movies you’re not supposed to watch is kind of a rite of passage for movie fans.
I remember my godfather took me to see Willow in theaters when I was 8 and the lion-dog attack in the beginning freaked me out! When I was 12 or 13 and friend and I watched Terminator and her little brother had nightmares that night. But hey like I said it’s a rite of passage, it’s part of the fun 😃

Hey Hal, I’m not sure if you can help me but I’m having an issue burning your v4 of Ep1 to Blu-ray using tsmuxer. Basically I’ve been able to burn the movie but when I try to play it on my PS4 the video is glitchy and stutters. Is your mkv supposed to be blu-ray compatible?

Town32 suggested to make sure to select “Do not change SEI and VUI data” in tsmuxer. There was one other person who had trouble playing it on a PS4, though that was before we found out checking that box solved a great deal of people’s problems.

It’s not just your videos that do this, though it’s fairly uncommon. I now always check my BDs made with tsmuxer in powerdvd/whatever before burning. I found that my own encodings were doing it as well. (Apparently there is a certain version of premiere that can cause this problem, was fixed after I updated).

Thanks but unfortunately that trick didn’t work for me. I’m still encountering the same problems 😦

Hmm, I just tried mine on a PS4 and you’re right. It fixes it for my standalone, PS3, and PC though.

I had the same issue (with V4 of Ep1). I followed the tip and my bluray now works on my computer and one of my 2 bluray players (strangely it’s my old player that has no issue).

The resulting file is slightly too large for my disc, but I burned it anyway. It failed when it got to the end of my disc space, but it still plays (freezing with 1.5 minutes of credits left at the end).

Yeah, I didn’t anticipate TS overhead when making sure the final mkv was under 25GB. But, excluding the alternate audio track allows it to fit.
And it just seems like PS4s don’t want to cooperate.

I’m glad I didn’t remove the alternate language tracks because I’m listening to your commentary now and quite enjoying it. You do a great job of explaining why you made the choices you did (like keeping the virgin birth scene)

I loved your edit of the movie too, it will definitely be my go-to version for watching. The only thing I didn’t like was the deleted scene you re-added. Your comment about how you did it for pacing makes sense - the only reason I don’t like it is teh picture quality is slightly worse, and the CGI of Anakin’s buddy is really poor.

I’m really looking forward to your takes on Episodes 2 & 3. I’m not sure if I’ll be able to wait for V4’s, or if I’ll dive in soon on the V3’s.

For those with trouble getting the Bluray to play, even after checking that SEI\VUI setting, I have a solution for you.

I took the m2ts file out of the BDMV\Stream folder that tsmuxer creates and ran it through AVCHDCoder (also shrinking the file ever so slightly so it fits on a disc). For me, that disc still didn’t play in one of my bluray players, but after I ran the m2ts file AVCHDCoder outputed through tsmuxer again, everything is great!

I assume I lost some quality by having AVCHDCoder re-encode the video, but I looked very closely and can’t tell the difference myself.

I can’t stress how happy I am with your edit! It’s well worth the time (and extra discs) it took me to figure out how to play it. 😃

Awesome, thanks for posting!
Reencoding is one way to make it fit to a disc.
I was hoping to have V4 out before TFA, but it depends on Schorman’s schedule, but V3 is adequate in the meantime; it’s what I watched with some friends during our own pre-7 viewings.

Well, yes, re-encoding is always a way to achieve compatibility. Hal9000’s edit is VCD compliant in that regard. 😃

I really enjoyed this edit. I could hardly tell it was an edit and it seemed like it could be the original film. My dad thought it was good. My sister enjoyed it but had reservations about one part once I told her the difference from the original.

Take the reservations with a grain of salt since this is the last version of your edit but my sister and I tend to agree about this. She expressed surprise when Anakin suddenly went against Qui Gon’s orders to hide and took action in a space ship. When I told her what was in the original film, she seemed to like that idea better and asked to see the original episode 2 next instead of a fan edit. I tried to explain why that’s not a very good idea. I will probably get my way anyway and we’ll watch an edit.

My thoughts on it, and I think a lot of fan edits make this mistake, is they make Anakin a little to competent and action oriented and forget he is also a child. This is a small reservation out of the whole edit you put together masterfully but I thought I’d give my feedback since my family felt the same way. Taking the spinning out of this space ship scene is good, but I think including the part where Qui Gon asks him to hide in the ship and the part where Anakin tries to justify his action with something like, “well he told me to stay in the ship”, might go a long way with that particular sudden action he takes.

Thanks for all the work you put into this edit. Again, it was masterfully done though it was on the soldiers of giants.

Thanks! That’s a valid point, though I did remove Qui-Gon telling him to stay in the cockpit and made it look like Anakin only got in there when he saw Padme needed help. You might get what I’m saying by comparing it to the original version of the scene when the duel with Maul begins. (I also trimmed Qui-Gon’s like so he tells Anakin to hide but doesn’t emphasize it by repeating himself. He’s gotta tell Anakin something before taking him into a war zone!)
Your sister’s concerns are valid, though I don’t think she knows what a force to be reckoned with the prequels are! Thanks for the feedback.

No problem. Your welcome.
I think my sister actually liked Anakin. I told her she may not like him in the next movies if we watch the original films. I think you trimmed Jar Jar well to make him the “everyman” you mentioned. I think it’s easy for us to understand why he follows the jedi, his “lifedebt”, but since nearly every edit skips his banishment I still felt the need to pause to emphasise the lifedebt so my sister and dad didn’t miss why the heck this creature is tagging along lol. All in all I still think it’s better without the banishment and all his clumsiness and helps salvage the movie.

I saw on the fan edit database an edit of TPM called “the phantom mending”. It had a couple favorable reviews and sounds like it made a couple more radical edits than your installment. I was wondering if you’d seen it because I didn’t see it anywhere, or any forums about it and was curious.
EDIT: Actually I signed up for fanedit.org forums but just noticed the confirmation went to my spam folder. So I will be able to look there after the site is working.

oh. and I was going to say, while it does make sense for Qui Gon to tell him to hide, I also had the impression that he wanted Anakin along to watch him. When the council says he can’t be trained Qui Gon tells Anakin to watch him and take note. I don’t know how he expects Anakin to do that when he is hiding though. I think it was just a bit of an oversight on George Lucas’s part.

So, I’m doing a rewatch of the saga with some friends and none of them have ever seen a fanedit before. I’m trying to decide between your Ep I and L8wrtr’s. I’ve already decided to go with L8wrtr’s other two edits (although your v4 of EpII could persuade me differently) but I really do think I prefer your Ep I. Does anyone know on any glaring inconsistencies between Hal’s Ep1 and the other two l8wrtr films?

I dunno, dude. I love L8WRTR’s edits, but he cut out the ‘deathsticks’ exchange from Episode II. That’s kind of a deal breaker for me. The ‘deathsticks’ scene is one of the very few moments of joy I experience watching Attack of the Clones! XD
