Justified (2010-2015)

Sad to see it go but it was time. I think they managed to tie everything up pretty well. Well, except for one minor quibble I had with where one relationship ended up. But overall, it was a good show. I'll never get used to that completely inappropriate opening theme though. =P

After trying (and failing) to rewatch the entire first season of this show, I've only got one question: How did I fail to recognize how utterly stupid this show was as a kid? I was something of a dim bulb in my youth, but even at eleven years old, I should have been able to see that the writing was atrociously bad.

Oh, well, it's just yet another show in a growing list of shows from my youth which don't live up to nostalgia. At this point, I'm almost desensitized to the disappointment ... *sigh*

not interested.

The other day I watched all the New Mickey Mouse Shorts made so far. I forgive Disney for making that infernal CG Clubhouse.

They're grrrrrreat!

LOL. I think Rick dodged a bullet there.

As of now, I've seen 97 episodes of the original Twilight Zone. That leaves me 59 left to get through.

Back in 2001, I caught a few episodes of the short-lived horror anthology series Night Visions on TV and remembered finding it a decent if unremarkable show. Since I have a goal to eventually rewatch every single movie and TV show I remember watching from my childhood and early 20s, I figured I'd revisit this series and see how it held up to memory.

Well, I found every episode on YouTube and watched all but two of them (Stupid YouTube muted the entire auto tracks of those two episodes, and there were no subtitles available, so I decided to skip them.). Overall, it was a pretty good series; the host was rather lame, but the stories and guest actors were generally above average. It's a shame this show was cancelled after only a single season; there was definitely enough potential there for another two or three quality seasons.

My rating: A

I've also watched the first nine episodes of the 1995-96 series Space: Above and Beyond. Unfortunately, this show hasn't really impressed me. The premise is good, and there's nothing really bad about the series, but the execution falls short for me; the whole war storyline feels haphazard and directionless, the starships/fighters aren't very impressive design-wise, and the idea that humanity has developed the capability to create AIs, artificial humans, and ships with antigravity and FTL capabilities so soon into the future -- the 2050s-2060s, to be precise -- stretches credibility to the breaking point for me.

I frankly don't feel compelled to watch the remaining episodes.

My rating: C+

Against my better judgement, I decided to watch the pilot episode of Heroes Reborn last night.

I didn't realize teal & orange colour grading had made its way into television.

Ugh.

I don't want to continue watching what is bound to be another awful series, but it has a strong train wreck factor working for it -- I find it hard to look away.

Not to mention they successfully cloned Gunnery Sgt. Hartman, who died in 1967. ;)

I was watching The Walking Dead up to season 4. I stopped there. The writing was just getting to be shit. It wasn't top notch to begin with IMO.

The new 'Muppets' show is horrible.

Rather than having any of the sense of joy or fun of the earlier productions, it is instead a cynical, disastrous trainwreck that undermines everything that made the Muppets what they were.  It is painfully unfunny, and a slap in the face to Jim Henson and everyone who made the original show what it was.  Damn to the depths of hell the idiots who are responsible for this ludicrous display of poor taste.  Avoid at all costs!

I was afraid of that. They've been floundering around for years now. It's seems as if no one has stepped up with a vision for where to take them so they've just been floating from one monetarily enticing outside offer to the next.

Yes, just got around to watching it. It's basically The Office: Muppets Edition. I'm okay with the format itself but the execution left a lot wanting. You can get away with a lot of things with the Muppets as long as it's funny. This was pretty lacking in that department. Though there was one great line from Pepe that had me cracking up for a while. Ultimately, as mediocre as this first episode was it was still a breath of fresh air after the last two movies.

Anyway, it should be noted that this isn't the first time the Muppets have toyed with more adult sensibilities. After the success of Sesame Street Jim Henson didn't want the Muppets to be pigeonholed into being strictly for children. So to combat that, in 1974-75 he created two pilots for new series one of which was titled SEX AND VIOLENCE.

Never saw it, but I thought the first new movie was supposed to be pretty good?

That would be Bill Prady, late 80s Muppet writer turned Big Bang Theory creator. I honestly was going to lay into him, but I didn't know he actually worked with Henson and wrote the memorial special after he died. I didn't find the new show to be as awful as I feared. I'll give it another couple episodes, see if it can actually move from "not awful" to "actually made me laugh". Maybe if it wasn't focused on Kermit and Fozzie's dating drama (not to each other) and was just about the writer's room, because I'd watch Gonzo, Rizzo, and Pepe all day.

Yeah, it's funny. The newer Muppets are the ones I enjoy the most. Especially Pepe, Rizzo and Bobo. Probably has to do with the fact that they're still performed by their original puppeteers.

You're forgetting the Muppet skits on Saturday Night Live in it's first year. Way more adult that what they did elsewhere. Sex, drugs, and violence. ;)

There's a pilot they did in 2007 for a gay themed cable channel that would blow some people's minds, (although it's actually a bit tame) but that didn't carry the Muppet name or any established characters.

Pilots are always a little rough around the edges, (and people forget the original show took a while to find it's groove) so I'll give it a chance. The comments I've read elsewhere about the show being too adult and unwholesome for kids seem to be coming from people who know zilch about the Muppets' history.

Statler and Waldorf back in form, (they were in a rest home on Muppets Tonight!) and Fozzie commenting about the unintended responses to his "bear looking for love" personal ad were hilarious.

I hope they follow Gonzo around, and his personal life is still weird. ;)

It's not the 'adult' or 'edgy' (or whatever other inane adjective) nature of it that bothers me.  What ruins it is the fact that it doesn't ring true to what the Muppets are actually about.  They may make jokes about many things, they may be many things, but mean-spirited is not one of them.  What I saw on this new show was very much based in mean-spirited humor, encouraging the viewer to laugh at the characters rather than with them.  (The use of the term 'humor' itself is overly generous in this case, since not only was it not funny, it was painfully embarrassing to sit through.)

Maybe this is too subtle a tonal discord for the writers of the new show to be able to pick up on, but they really should have known better—especially if the head guy has actually worked on the Muppets before.  That only serves to further lower my estimation of his abilities and understanding.

Besides, let's face it: that whole 'The Office' schtick has quite worn out its welcome by now.  It's a tiresome, irritating device which serves no purpose other than to disguise a lack of originality, and lampshading it only serves to further highlight the stupidity of using it in the first place.

Anybody else watching Narcos? I'm loving it. Just got through the first season.

Netflix takes on the infamous Medellín drug cartel in "Narcos," which follows the rise and fall of Colombian kingpin Pablo Escobar and the Drug Enforcement Agency agents hunting him.

To provide a conclusion to this, I’ll just say I forced myself to continue watching, and seven episodes in, there’s nothing there worth the effort; it’s just like post-Season 1 Heroes: lame, uninspired, poorly written, with cyphers for characters I don’t care a damn about.

I gave this series a chance it didn’t deserve, and it squandered it. I won’t be watching next week’s episode or any of the remaining episodes after it.

I’ve seen two episodes of that new Supergirl series, and I have to say that it’s a good thing Melissa Benoist is a great Kara/Supergirl; I wouldn’t be able to stomach the lousy supporting cast (Bizarro Olsen, I’m looking at YOU.) and villains if it wasn’t for her performance.
