Hi and thanks for the great work!

May I have the English and Finnish subtitles for Harmy’s RotJ?

I’m showing the movies to a friend for the first time and I just had to get the despecialized versions for her to see. 😉

Thanks,

Moshugan

PM sent. Markup issues in the first post corrected (some things didn’t make it through the conversion), the layout is still a little wacky, but it’s better than it was.

Hey CatBus,

thank you so much for your awesome work!
Would you mind sending me the Subtitles for ROTJ in English and German?
Got a Star Wars Marathon coming up as preparation for the new movie 😉 There’s a friend watching with us who’s actually never seen the movies 😮 😄

Thanks in advance 😃

Ridiculous number of PM’s sent. Also, the new Unicode support lets people send back corrections directly via PM–thanks wayphat!

I’m having trouble adding the subtitles to the AVCHDs in the intent of burning to a DVD. To begin with, operating on an old MacBook doesn’t make this any easier. Might just be that my computer skills aren’t sufficient enough…

I have the AVCHD files for the movies in the .ISO form, which means the BDMV and CERTIFICATE folders.
TsMuxerGUI won’t read the m2ts files. I’m getting the “Can’t detect stream type” error when trying to add the file to the input. Which “video and audio file” does it mean in the Project Threepio README?

Am I doing everything wrong? Should I have the films in a completely different file type in the first place? Should I be converting or demuxing the files, if that’s even a thing? - can’t be done in TsMuxerGui since it “Can’t detect stream type”.

If I’m completely on the wrong track here, don’t bother trying to help me! I can happily watch the films without subtitles, they would be just a nice bonus.

You seem to be doing everything right, and you’re correct that the central problem seems to be tsMuxerGUI not recognizing the M2TS files. Yes, you should just be able to add the M2TS files, add whichever SUP files you want, and make a new AVCHD folder structure. It might be possible that if you’re extracting the M2TS files from the ISO, that they are not getting extracted correctly due to their large size or something. It’s also possible that the Mac version of tsMuxerGUI is somehow broken and that you might have better luck running the Windows version under Wine. tsMuxerGUI failing to recognize an M2TS file seems to say to me that there’s something wrong with the M2TS file itself. Verify the checksum on the ISOs?

Thanks for the quick response!

Well, after checking out WineHQ I don’t think I have the patience and skills to dive into that… I might try this with my PC but it’s so old that I don’t think it will manage anything anymore.

How do I “verify the checksum” then?

Another thing: It looks like SW already has 5 subtitles included but VLC wont show them except for quick flashes in some scenes. The included subtitles in ESB work perfectly. I haven’t burnt SW to a DVD yet, but I doubt the subs will work any better on a Blu-Ray player.

EDIT: tsMuxerGUI “can’t detect stream type” with ESB, although it should be a fully functional file. So the problem is probably in the software.

The checksum is a numerical thumbprint for the file, to see if it’s been corrupted. Harmy posts the checksums for his files in the first posts of his project threads. You just Google around for a program that will give you the right kind of checksum (MD5, SHA-1, CRC32), and see if the value from your file matches what Harmy posted.

Subtitles that flash for one frame (only in VLC) was a bug this project had a long time ago, apparently about the time the AVCHD for Star Wars was made–it was definitely fixed by the time ESB came out. The subs are at fault, but they did work on every other player I tried, including hardware players from multiple manufacturers, MPC-HC, etc. You could also fix them by muxing in SUP files from the current project, but again you need tsMuxerGUI working to do that. And I don’t think ROTJ had any subtitles at all at the time it was released.

EDIT: Also keep in mind that in addition to not using a Mac, I don’t use the AVCHD versions either. So if you’re following this thread and I’m missing something, please feel free to chime in. I also don’t use the SRT files, so if there’s a way to get them working with the AVCHD, that may be another option.

Okay, I’ll see to the checksum thing tomorrow…

Maybe I’ll just burn the DVDs and enjoy them without the subs. With luck ROTJ will be the only one lacking them. I’ll try again if they release an update for tsMuxer or some other miracle happens.

Thanks again! This is truly an amazing project, not to mention the community.

Wow, it actually worked. Following the instructions in the comments I deleted the two fonts and cleared the font cache using OnyX.

Thanks for helping out!

Dang, I hoped my thread would stay at 666 replies forever! Oh well, I suppose for good news, it was worth it.

Definitely mux in the new subtitles since you have them already. Every version fixes small typos and mistakes, so especially for the ancient Star Wars ones, I’d be embarrassed to have people using them 😉

Got the subs working and immediately started tampering them… What an asshole I am. Well, here are some improvements I quickly put together for SW-fi-full. They aren’t huge things, mainly small corrections in grammar and contextual things, such as changing “the milky way” to “the galaxy”.

Actually, I have an improved Finnish translation for Star Wars but haven’t made it available yet. Who’s the asshole now? 😉

Seriously, though, I’ve been waiting to see if I can get more improvements (like for Empire and/or Jedi) before I make a whole new release out of it.

A sampling of new translations for the lines you indicated are here:

Olen Imperiumin senaatin jäsen
diplomaattisella asialla Alderaaniin.

Miten jouduimme tähän sotkuun?

Luke, jos setäsi ostaa tulkin,
varmista, että se osaa boccea.

If you want the new files, I can make them available for you to look through. The new version is based on a translation from our member LexX, which not only corrects problems, but is a more complete translation overall–i.e. less summaries, more flavor of the actual original dialogue.

Sounds good. I could look through them but I think LexX has been doing what I would have eventually done.

It’s unclear to me what his plans are for the rest of the trilogy. He mentioned a few lines of Empire, so that’s probably on his radar, but I don’t know his timeframe for a completed translation (Star Wars took a long time, I’d imagine ESB would as well). I don’t know if he has any plans for ROTJ at all. If you’re interested in improving the Finnish subtitles overall, you might be able to coordinate with him either via PM or in this thread–something like you take ROTJ, he takes ESB, and you collaborate on consistent translations when you opt for different words, that sort of thing. All I can do is cheer you on.
