STAR WARS: REBELS (animated tv series) - a general discussion thread — Page 41

So, pre-TPM we've got Jedi in their temples, mediating disputes between senators (for some reason). From AotC on, we've got them as warrior-general's doing impossible things. Neither option seems like they had much time with the general population. Even if your planet was touched by war, its not like you're sticking around to find out of if the rumors of Jedi powers are true.

Population-wise, I imagine its like hearing about a couple dudes who live in DC who supposedly have magic powers. Politicians come to them for advice, but no one else really sees them. Eventually they lead an army in a war in the Middle East, you hear about all the cool things they can do, but you've never met them. Then you hear they betrayed the country and had to be killed. Then you're told by those same politicians that they never really had powers, it was all a lot of simple tricks and nonsense.

I'm just spitballing here, but for most of the trillions of people's lifetimes, the Jedi are just 10,000 guys who hang out with famous people. The Jedi were getting insular, because their ability to use the Force was diminishing. Or their ability was diminishing because they were getting insular.

I suppose I can buy this.

But one of the only things I liked about the PT (that went out the window after TPM) was when the Jedi just showed up the bad guys said "We will not survive this."  That's how amazing they were.

I'm re-reading the original Star Wars novel.  Ben kind of has that vibe in the book as well.

This is another reason that I never bought the whole "You can't kill me to save the universe because then you'll be just like ME!  Bwahahahahaha!" nonsense from Empire and Jedi.

Back on topic, it wasn't a new thing this week, but those cloudscapes in last weeks Rebels, and the wide shot of the Old Republic tank were so Ralph McQuarie it made me giggle like an eight year old.  I loved it.

^^That's the most logical way of looking at it that I've seen. The lack of belief in the Force by the time of the OT seems a lot more plausible now.

Interdictor cruisers and Mon Calamari inventing the B-Wing are pretty bedrock EU, btw.

Interdictor cruisers yes, but the concept that the B-Wing is of "alien" origin comes straight from the original production (I vividly remember a production sketch saying "alien" but it's not in the ROJ Sketchbook)

Lucas on the colorization of the THREE STOOGES in 2004: "Maybe just the fact that they're in black and white makes it funny, because their humor is dated. But by putting it in black and white, it puts it in a context where you can appreciate it for what it was.Lucas on film preservation before Congress in 1988: "The public's interest is ultimately dominant over all other interests."

I was really pleased to see the Interdictor in the trailer. It alleviated some of the disappointment brought on by the fact that they're doubling down on the stupid inquisitor lightsaber. How many season 2 episodes have actually aired at this point? I saw the hour-long one over the summer and the premiere with the clones, and I know there was another clone-heavy one last night, but I've seen a lot of talk about the new inquisitors like they've been around for a bit. Is this on a different release schedule elsewhere?

Author

? I think they were just in some previews/commercials, and the casting announcement. You've seen a lot of talk about them because people like to complain about Star Wars.

It sounds like you've seen all of the episodes. An hour long premiere in the Summer, this week's, and last week's.

Last week’s episode was great. Loved the face off between the Clones and the Empire.

This show is f&$@ing pathetic…never thought there would be a character more annoying to me than Jar Jar and Episode 2 Anakin…Ezra…I hate this character with all my black heart…a total Luke Skywalker rip off and all this crap about inquisitors is ridiculous…Vader is suppose to be the one purging the galaxy if Jedi! I can’t believe so many of you give this crap show a pass…you’re clearly blinded by your nostaligia for the OT

I can’t believe so many people are into this show, even granting it status equal to the original trilogy. For me, this show is a huge disappointment. It’s lame and completely misses the mark in the kind of story that I wanted to see take place between episode 3 and 4. I would think that if you were to ask fans what they wanted to see in a show that takes place between episode 3 and 4 the number one answer would have been Darth Vader. I know for me personally I want to see Vader hunt down the remaining Jedi. Instead we get no Vader except for one episode (those stupid cameos that aren’t even a minute long in season 1 don’t count for me). Instead we get the Inquisitors, stupid and pointless characters who are playing the role Vader should be doing.

Another point where this show fails is in the Rebels crew. I would think that a majority of Star Wars fans when asked what they would want to see in a Rebels show would say they want to see Mon Mothma, Bail Organa, Wedge Antilles, Biggs Darklighter and a young princess Leia coordinating their rebellion against the empire. Instead we get a lame and corny wannabe Luke Skywalker character, Ezra, who is more annoying than Anakin in AOTC could ever be, and feels like a total gimmick to copy the Luke character. Ezra is a totally unlikable character for me and I hate his stupid Sling shot! Man, how lame can you be? Sabine is another gimmicky character, sporting pink mandalorian armor, it just feels like a Disney business ploy to target little girls, which is exactly what it is ( “look! she’s a girl! and she has pink mandalorian armor! ain’t it cool girls? now buy all her toys!”). There’s nothing wrong with female characters but why depict it like this? Sabine even spray paints a TIE fighter hot flourescent colors! I wish this show would have been more like the EU Dark Horse comics “The Purge” and “At War With the Empire.” You know, actually tried to have some edge? The clone wars TV show was more edgy than this and at least they focused on their main characters like Anakin and Obi Wan and didn’t pull a bunch of gimmicky lame characters out of their butts.

This show just feels too kiddy at times and feels like they competely missed the mark. I want to see Vader hunting down Jedi, I want to see Mon Mothma getting the the Death Star plans, I want to see Wedge and Biggs in their X Wings, I want to see Bail Organa’s last stand on alderaan before he’s blown to bits, I want to see how Leia came to be a leader of the rebellion. As far as new characters Hera and Kanan are likable and I wish the show would cut the rest of the crew out because I don’t like them, especially Zeb and Ezra, who horseplay way too much like Tom and Jerry. The only good thing about this show was seeing Tarkin show up at the end if season 1, revealing Ashoka’s return and that Vader episode in season 2.

I know many of you disliked the prequels but to me this is far more blasphemous…I’d rather watch bith clone wars tv shows and revenge of the sith than thismlame shit any day

That’d be interesting, but would probably require subtitles.
One more thing that held me back from enjoying Clone Wars (2008) and Rebels is the ugly and unappealing animation. If a few of the main highlights were novelized, I’d honesty prefer to take in the story that way.

My stance on revising fan edits.

Yet my five year old nephew absolutely LOVES this show and squeals with delight when it’s on.

Maybe wait until Rogue One for some “edge”?

They just started showing Rebels here on TV, today was the third episode. I have to concur with most of you that this to me is the most Star Wars-y movie/TV show type of thing since Droids, maybe even more. For a kids’ show, I think they more or less nailed the atmosphere. But I also agree about the animation, it’s pretty rough but if you have seen other kids’ shows these days, it’s pretty okay. But I love the backgrounds and the music and the themes mostly. The characters… yeah, I think it would do better without any Jedi stuff. And Sabine would be better without that weird pink armor, what’s up with that anyways? But let’s see how this progresses, I have a lot of catching up to do.

Clone Wars was for teens and adults, Rebels is for children. Unfortunately. I must admit I really liked the first season, even when I thought it’s not going far enough (I mean we’ve seen countless deaths in CW, but I can’t remember one death from Rebels, even the Inquisitor’s death was only “hinted” and not shown), the animation was too “disneyfied” and Ezra looked like Aladin, and Kanan looks like Shaggy from the Scooby Doo cartoons. But the second season ? I still haven’t seen an episode of the second season which I would consider to be at least “good”.

I think you should go back and watch the first couple seasons of the Clone Wars. Far more kiddy than Rebels has ever approached. It wasn’t until the later seasons that they got away from themselves with how dark it got. It was good but it wasn’t true to what the heart of the franchise is.

Rebels was designed from the ground up to emulate the same kind of adventure romp that Star Wars was. Now they’re slowly working their way toward an ESB vibe.

Countless Stormtroopers have bitten the dust at the hands of our heroes. Including that poor fellow who Kallus kicked to his doom off a cliff. Then there was the execution of those two officers by the order of Tarkin. This season has seen the loss of fighters and a frigate on the Rebel side.

But the second season ? I still haven’t seen an episode of the second season which I would consider to be at least “good”.

You didn’t consider the wrath of Darth Vader in the season opener good? Nor the epic clash between an outmatched AT-TE and an AT-AT? You must have some crazy standards.

Nope. I thought it was boring to be honest.

Rebels is far stronger in every way than Clone Wars, I think.

And no more kiddie. It’s fun and lighthearted at times with a youthful spirit but that doesn’t necessarily make it kiddie. The fact that kids can enjoy it too is not a bad thing. Honestly Clone Wars with its endless firefights and lightsaber battles is more kiddie in my mind because that’s just ADD fireworks catnip for young children. Rebels more often is interested in character and story.

Honestly for me my only big gripes are having individual half-hour episodes, instead of arcs. The stories tend to feel rushed to me most of the time. That and the animation could certainly be better, although The Clone Wars looked pretty cheap in the beginning too. Although i’ve found the latest episodes seem like a noticeable improvement.

Remember though, Rebels seems most likely to do the same trend with its storylines and grow with its audience. There may be more young adult focused episodes later on.

That was one of things that bothered me a little, too. The first two episodes (Spark…) had a lot of stuff crammed into two 22 minute episodes, in five minutes they left a planet, went to hyperspace, came back, saved the kid, destroyed a Star Destroyer, again to hyperspace… There’s way too much jumping to lightspeed, hopefully they would stay a little more still. I remember Droids and I think they went once to hyperspace and it felt a little more “special” than just popping up everywhere.

I may take up watching it again … provided some faneditor decides to trim them down into a set of films. Like TCW, Rebels strikes me as something that’ll have a large filler-to-story ratio, and this time I’d rather not slog through six seasons for a handful of really good stories.

Author
Time

It’s actually a lot more streamlined storywise. Season one had some filler but season two has been pushing the narrative forward pretty steadily.
