Hayden replacing Sebastian Shaw in ROTJ

Do you think Hayden Christensen was too stupid to realize he would piss off fans by replacing Sebastian Shaw as the ghost of Anakin or was he just too greedy to care?
I'd like a qui-gon jinn please with an Obi-Wan to go.

I really don't blame Hayden. I don't think it was his idea. George must have wanted it and so he did it.

Don't get me wrong, I don't like that change at all, I just think that the blame is being misplaced. I am more upset that Hayden is playing Darth Vader. He is no where close to the size of David Prowse and so I just think the suit is going to look stupid on his smaller frame.

A scary thought came to me the other day. I realize that for most of us we have a good reason to be pissed off that Sebastian Shaw was replaced by Hayden Christensen at the end of ROTJ. But what about those kids or people that only see the new star wars (prequels and special editions)?

Watching episodes 4-6 without ever having any idea what Anakin Skywalker looked like under that suit made the end of ROTJ a big pay off. We could see the broken and burned man under the mask being the healthy looking force ghost we see later. But if you were to see the prequels first and then seeing the unaltered episodes 4-6 would you wonder who the old guy is that appears next to Yoda and Obi-Wan? I can just imagine some of the younger fans being like "Who's that guy?" And after telling that that is Anakin Skywalker, I hear them saying "That doesn't look like Anakin Skywalker."

I don't know. I am in no way saying that the decision makes sense...just makes me feel bad about those who will grow up with the new Star Wars. They won't experience it the way that rest of us have.

Maybe I'm just being over-dramatic!

I just don't know why they didn't just cast someone that would be convincing as a young Sebastian Shaw in the first place, the same way they cast Ewan as a young Alec Guiness, cause Hayden certainly wasn't cast for his ability to act, as far as kids not recognising Shaw as Anakin at the end, it's easy ....20 years after being pulled out of a lava pit how recognisable would anyone be?

Wow i really cant believe that you guys are complaining about a scene that lasts all of 5 seconds at the end of the movies. if george wants to make the movies flow (which is his true purpose) he MUST make changes like that.

Screw the damn kids.

I'm guessing they cast Hayden because they thought he bore some kind of vague, passing resemblance to a younger Mark Hamill. Which may leave some to wonder why, when looking for the older version of Anakin in ROTJ they didn't find a guy who looked like an old version of Mark - or put Mark in prosthetic makeup like they did with Lea Thompson and Crispin Glover in "Back to the Future".

For George it was too easy a decision, he has to make things difficult

I'm not sure I follow your logic there.

It's too difficult to make Hamil look older, and George Lucas likes to make it difficult... So by extension, wouldn't he want to make Hamill look older rather than casting Shaw.

No, because it would be more difficult to hire a completely new actor that no one has seen before.

Personally, I don't have a huge problem with Christenssen's insertion at the end of ROTJ (I understand your gripes, but it doesn't bother me so much). Maybe this is because when I first learned that Hayden was going to replace Shaw at the end of Jedi, I thought they meant that he was going to be aged with make up and proshethics and inserted into Vader's helmet removal/death scene, so when it was just his ghost, I was happy. The moral is it could have been much worse, so be thankful.

Mate, there's like a 20 year gap from 3 to 4. People change in size man!!
Don't you think it would look a bit stupid if as soon as he's in the Vader suit, he grows in size too.
This ain't a Hulk movie man, be realistic!!

But bear in mind that in TPM, Anakin is, what, 8 years old? 10 years later, in AOTC, he is supposed to be 18. When you hit 18, your growth spurt is done. Repeat... done. You ain't growing the extra six or seven inches that Hayden needs to be of the same stature as David Prowse. The only way they're explaining this one away is that Anakin's extremities get burned away or otherwise destroyed in his saber fight with Obi Wan or the aftermath (I'm trying to avoid saying it for those who don't already have an idea) and that his Vaderlegs (TM) are longer than his Anilegs (TM). That's the only way to explain it because, HotRod, I'm sorry, people don't grow between the ages of 18 and 38 or 48 or 58, etc. The only direction that people grow after 18 is out, not up. And then, eventually, they lose height due to compression of the discs in your vertebrae. I hit six feet tall when I was 16 or 17 and I was done. That's it.

But people tend to stop growng at 20, and Anakin is 23 by RoTS

If I was making a Vader suit for the disfigured and crippled Anakin with legs that are bigger and stronger than the originals, I would have stuck a few blasters on the shoulders and a built in lightsaber in each hand. And seeing as Vader never done the force lightning trick, I'm assuming he can't, so I woulda stuck some kind of lightning gun or something on there too. And knives and sharp sticks.

War does not make one great.

But the bulk of your growth spurt happens before you hit 18. Usually around 12-16 years old for boys. For him to grow 6-7 inches between 18-23 is asking a bit much IMHO.

I agree with Bossk - there's only so much bulking up you can do within the framework of the human body.

Bossk explained my point much better than I did. I just think that by the end or middle of ROTS when we see Darth Vader (for the first time, kinda) we should be as intimidated by him as we were in episode 4. From what I have seen of the production photos, Darth Vader looks like a kid in blck suit. The intimidation factor is gone.

I hope that I am wrong about it though. I really do.

I agree. For me, presence is the core of Vader and his intimidation factor. Screw his abilities with the Force. I'm scared to death just looking at the guy. His initial incarnation had better be just as intimidating as his ANH incarnation. The boy ain't gonna grow in the interim.

Isn't that excatly what I said? It's unrealistic to expect him to continue growing after Becoming Vader.
