MeBeJedi, it's gonna take a lot of work to make this happen. From what I'm told, this VHS telecine is from a 16MM print that looks...well, not the best. But with proper software, the mono soundtrack (which I'm told is good) can be synched to the picture from the original version.

Currently, I can do DVD-R discs in PCM sound (not AC-3 as I don't have the proper software to do that yet)...that's how I did my transfers of the 1997 Special Editions to DVD-R, and each one necessitated two discs a title, since I had to get the supplementary material on them also (for instance, "A New Hope" includes the original special "The Making Of Star Wars" plus two clips from the original mono version with Aunt Beru and a before-and-after comparison of the Jabba scene; "Empire" includes "SPFX: The Making Of The Empire Strikes Back" [CBS special]; and "Jedi" includes "From Star Wars to Jedi: The Making Of A Saga" [PBS special]--I chose that over "Classic Creatures: The Making Of Return of the Jedi" as I didn't care very much for it.).

Wow. Well, this looks great, but I really do want the original mono mix, so I'm going to be waiting till MeBeJedi gets that ready. I plan on getting the Zion set and if possible I'd like to do a little of my own personal DVD editing and use the MeBeJedi mono soundtrack and crawl with everything else from Zion's SW disc, except the menus modded a bit to remove the ANH from Star Wars. But if I can't figure out how to do that (which I probably won't), I'll be getting Zion's ESB/ROTJ and MeBe's Pre-ANH. And if that doesn't come to fruitition, I'll just get this. Unless, of course, Zion wants to make a pre-ANH disc...*hint*

By the way, I have TMPGEnc DVD Author 1.6, and every time I add two videos to the same track the video becomes de-synched with the audio after the second track. For example, I got the new Battlestar Galactica miniseries and edited out the credits at the end of part one and beginning of part two, loaded part one onto a track in TMPGEnc DVDAuthor and then part two onto the next track. However, after the second half starts, the audio is out of sync, however if I skip back to the beginning of it the audio is back in sync, I just can't play it straight through. Not sure if this is the best thread for this, but anyone know what the deal is? Can I just not do this in that program?

The 1977 versions color timing puts the crawl at the orange color seen in TPM, and not the brighter yellow typeface seen is ESB and ROTJ.

First screen on the crawl, the sentence "It is a period of Civil War" occupies one line, the crawl was reformatted to remove three lines, so that the words "Episode IV A New Hope" could be added.

2nd screen, this is right before the documentary cuts. It should be noted that the DEATH STAR originally started a new line, and not wrapped, like in the 1981 re-release.

This is a decent proggie that I use ALL the time - I found that if you demultiplex your video that you've created with the O.G. TMPGEnc then OPEN the video in 1.6 then with the add files option just add your newly created .MP2 file and you SHOULD be set then with no audio delays. BUT in the event that it's STILL wonky - PM me and I'll get you 1.5 which NEVER has this issue (UNLESS your're doing a DL disc)

AS you can tell I've had this very same issue with 1.6

This thing has been around for awhile, and it hasn't propogated mostly because it's creators didn't WANT it to. I'm pretty sure they still don't, actually. Not because they're selfish or anything--they just don't want anyone to a) trace the thing back to them and b) come after them for it. They did it for fun, and for themselves (sort of like mverta) and copies have been slowly getting out ever since.

The crawl IS generated, I know that. I believe they used After Effects. It's pretty seamless in motion. The soundtracks are great, and the mono mix is VERY interesting. I've only listened to it about once, though. Thin as hell, of course.. if I had the hard-disk space and the processing power, I'd like to take a whack at ANYONES classic mono soundtrack and see if I can sweeten it up a little, I got some experience with sound editing. So do the makers of this set, as they included the deleted Williams cues BACK into the isolated score mix where they were originally supposed to go, and they're re-edited in seamlessly. Same with Empire and Jedi. The work on Empire itself is very good, as there were quite a few cues on Hoth that were cut out, but they're integrated here nicely.

Great set. Pic quality could be better, yeah, but for as old as it is, it stands up pretty well. I'm still waiting on Zion's (that's gonna be the winner, I'm tellin you) but this and Gonzo's are holding me over with NO problems

Yes, there's a whole set. At first, I'd only heard of "Star Wars" but there is a complete set done by these guys. The isolated scores on ESB and ROTJ are very good, especially the editing in of deleted cues into their intended placement.

Oh, I have a few contingency plans in motion.

And that's why I'll never give up on Vegas. I can visually sync up the audio and video (look for spikes in the WAV at key points, like when R2 falls down after the Jawas zap him), and then I can zoom in to the exact frame and slide the audio back and forth until it is in sync. I can splice in anything I want down to the frame, and never have to worry about losing sync. I could never have made the AC3 track at the quality I wanted without it. Rikter can tell you - even though there were 3 splices in the video (each side), it is in dead-on sync throughout the movie, even if you cycle through the different soundtracks.

I'm looking forward to comparing it to mine made in Combustion. It's modeled exactly after the crawl from the EOD documentary.

Well, ANH went through the most changes, so an ESB version wouldn't be much different from the others that are out there.

The picture on this DVD is from the THX LD. The sound on this Star Wars disc is from the 1989 widescreen laserdisc. This was a remix done by Ben Burtt in 1985. It's closer to the original mix than the 1993 and 1995 THX LD's and obviously closer than the 1997 and 2004 mixes. You can read all about it here. The dead giveaway that this is the 1989 mix and not the 1977 Dolby Stereo mix is the 3PO line about the tractor beam. It's on this DVD, and not on the 1977 Dolby Stereo mix, which so far as I know, has never been put onto DVD. Not even the recent "split screen" disc.

The isolated score track is very well done, matching the edits in the movie. There are more than you realize, and whoever made this did a wonderful recreation. It's also fun seeing the "Dianoga" scene with the score synched up to it. The Empire isolated track isn't quite as successful. It recreates some tracking at times (the introduction of the Super Star Destroyer for instance) instead of hearing Williams' original composition (the scene was extended, so the original music wouldn't quite fit but a little editing might have fixed that).

The original crawl on this disc is a recreation, but it's very well done. And it even has retained the lower case "r" in the word "rebel". I never saw the point in capitalizing it and always type that way, in honor of the way the movie originally was.

The color on the Star Wars disc is desaturated, and I'm not sure why. It looks alright, but it probably could have looked better. The Greedo scene has sub-titles that are in the black band and sometime overlap the image as well. The side breaks are incredibly well handled, so I'm not sure if this is from the 1993 or 1995 LDs.

When I want to watch Star Wars on DVD, this is the disc that I grab. It's the best version of the movie I've ever seen on home video.

The Greedo scene has sub-titles that are in the black band and sometime overlap the image as well.


Well, the disc was encoded as 4x3. They didn't think there was enough resolution there to try a 16x9 transfer, or enough to make it worthwhile, that is. So if you have a 16x9 display, hit the zoom button. But since they were doing it 4x3, they figured why not keep the subtitles in the black?

MeBe: Sorry for any misunderstanding, but by "cues" I meant audio cues. Not actual deleted scenes. Deleted music cues. And Neil is right, there IS one rough moment (I think it's when Han is riding back to Echo Base at the beginning of ESB) where there's a dodgy fade-in or two. But for the most part, I thought the score editing on the isolated tracks was VERY well done. Neil's a bit more nitpicky, but that's because he's a huge film-score fan.

Well someone pointed out that I talked about this set back in September. Of course that was at another forum.

Oh, and about the sub-titles, the LD used for this was also 4x3 and had the sub-titles in the black band, just under the image. This disc features re-done sub-titles for some reason.

Do you know how the isolated score tracks on this set compares to the ISOMIX version? Specifically, did these guys magically find the film version of "Lapti Nek" and the Jabba's barge music? If so, I NEED THE JEDI DISC

The Jabba source music does not exist. It's been lost since 1986, when it was last heard in From Star Wars to Jedi: The Making of a Saga. That being said, it seems the music editor on this disc was sneaky and used From Star Wars to Jedi to get the music to more or less match it up to this scene.

Lapti Nek is not the film version but seems to be the "Dub Mix" of the song heard on a promotional 12" 45 rpm record released in 1983 and cut to the picture.

Well, I don't have a DVD drive in my computer, so I can't do it anyway. And even if I could--I don't think I would. Those guys made it clear they didn't want me passing it around or making it available without their permission on file-share programs and such. I know it won't make much of a difference now since apparently it's going to get out anyway, but I DID tell them I wouldn't do it, and I don't want to make myself a LIAR. I've been an ass, an overreactive ass, and a loud, overreactive, vindictive ass, but I try to never LIE.

And since both Zion and MeBe are planning very similar ideas (and I volunteer my assistance to Zion or MeBe on the audio editing side if they want it as far as isolated scores, alternate scores. I have access to some alternate orchestral versions of Star Wars score, done by Erich Kunzel and the Cincinnati Orchestra, as well as Charles Gerhardt and the Scottish National Symphony, including Gerhardt's entire "The Empire Strikes Back" Score he recorded, which, at the time of it's release, was the most complete recording of ESB available) It might simply be better to just wait until their projects are done, because as much as I love these and Gonzo's, chances are I'm going to instantly replace them with Zion's when that one drops.

I'm in the same boat. Honor among thieves I guess, but it's really not mine to distribute.

That being said, I did contact Rikter yesterday about another Star Wars DVD that I couldn't care less about getting out there and shared and shared and shared and shared. Hopefully I'll hear back from him soon. It's not the O-OT, but it's a cool disc.

Dude, that's cool (I got the impression from the other thread that you didn't have these.) I'd love to use this stuff for another soundtrack (ESB is my favorite. I had a soundtrack DVD somewhere, and played it in class, but I can't find it anymore. )

Hell, at this point, I may have to have a separate release with all the soundtracks possible.

2) My AC3 track
3) Mono
4) Def. Col. commentary
5) Official DVD commentary (still on the fence about this one.)
6) ISOMIX score
7) Score from this new DVD
8) Bizzle's recordings

DVDLAB-Pro will let me master a DVD with 8 soundtracks, so this would max it out - but DAMN, what a repository of material that is.

(I was also considering taking some of the original voices from the EOD commentary, like David Prowse. That would be kinda funny. )
