"Unless the Alien Quadrilogy set uses a different logo, that is."

I have the original Alien DVD set. I'll check the intro on that one.

MeBeJedi: Sadly, I believe the prequels are beyond repair.
JediRandy: They’re certainly beyond any repair you’re capable of making.

Go-Mer-Tonic: I can’t say I find that very disappointing.

JediRandy: I won’t suck as much as a fan edit.

Just use the Alien one, since a big deal has been made about capturing "the feel of the film" rather than being a particular version.
I hardly think something as trivial as a slightly different studio logo is going to spoil the enjoyment of the movie, just use the one that looks the best. Its really not a huge change at all.

In theory, there should be dozens, if not hundreds of other Fox films from the 50's onward the old logo could be lifted from. Odd they didn't change the name after 1999, thus making an old Saturday Night Live joke from the 70's prophetic.

I though mike said he was keeping the new logo, to soften the otherwise "dated" look of the films.

I think the original Alien DVD, form like 5 years ago, has the correct logo. But is anyone listening to me about the featurette on the bonus disc??? If not, whatever, just stick anything on that looks similar - the modern 2004 logo is too modern.

"This is the logo I was referring to, that supposedly comes from ALIEN."

Yes, Molly. I just checked my 20th Anniversary DVD, and that is the logo for it (the light beam over the "th" has a little squiggle at the top.)

Looks to me like the original Alien DVD logo is the one to go with. I'll probably use it on my own DVD.

Skyman posted screenshots from the bonus disc of the LFL logo and the "A long time ago" here. No Fox logo though. I don't think it was on there.

I'm pretty sure it was. I'll check though, I might be wrong.

Mike, why are you creating a detailed website about your restoration if (as you claim) it's just for your own personal use?
I'm not asking you to share your set, but why you are proudly showing it off on your website when it's just for you?

My stance on revising fan edits.

I think I remember him saying at one point that he's showing it on his site so that others can follow his lead and make their own.

So with any luck someone'll make a picture-perfect recreation of Mike's personal version and share it.

And even if that doesn't happen, I still think it's really neat to watch his progress.

Even if nothing's progressed for almost two months. Heh heh

Maybe he figured that everyone bitching at him for not making it the way THEY want it, and then not giving it to them anyway, maybe he thought it wasn't worth it, and he didn't give a crap about whether or not he makes a couple bucks off bunch of spoiled brats anymore?

That cross anyone's mind?

Between this and the whole brouhaha in the "Pre-ANH capture" thread, I'm noticing a sort of group mindset that isn't all that reassuring. It dresses itself up like 'Oh, that's cool,' and 'hey, whatever for the fans, you know?' but as soon as shit gets rocky, that facade drops, and the real shit comes up. and it looks like 'gimme gimme gimme' and if you're not gonna 'gimme' than what the hell are you bothering for? Why are you doing it? What are you showing US for, like WE care, WE don't get anything out of it, it's not gonna put a DVD in MY HAND, so what the hell should I give a flying fuck about what YOU'RE doing?

Hey, and while I'm standing here complaining about how I'M not gonna get anything from YOU, you bastard, why don't I peek over your shoulder and tell you just what's WRONG with the choices you're making, and how they'd be SO much better if you'd only LISTEN TO ME, BECAUSE I KNOW BETTER. And if you'd listen to me, you'd do what I'd say, and that'd include giving me a copy of this,

You know. For the fans.

That said--it is a little screwed up that ADM's T-shirt order is taking that long. But then again, as Mike pointed out himself--you can get that shirt at about 4 or 5 other geek-shirt stores, and maybe THAT had something to do with it, too?

Hello everyone -

First, regarding shirt orders: I'm sorry for the delay, but I had a family trajedy at the end of last year that sent me home to Chicago for a while... The kind of trajedy that shuts down life for a bit. In any case, there are a whole bunch of orders that are sitting right next to me on my desk here, in fact, which I've left a thousand stickies all over saying "SHIP SHIRTS". Tomorrow is Monday the 24th, and they're all going out, some FedEX because people have really waited long enough. Apologies, but I don't have a shipping department, and the intern who was doing them went back to school... so...

As for other people's shirt offers: they suck, so whatever.

As for the restoration: My birthday is June 20, and on that day I'll be watching my finished restoration. I'm currently splitting my work day between my usual gigs running my business, doing my restoration, and a ton of work on the final sequel to the fanfilm "Pink Five" by Trey Stokes called "Return of Pink Five." I'm doing a whole slew of effects shots, the sound design, mix and writing the score, so it's a time hog.

I don't have any problem with anything anyone says about my restoration. People care deeply about Star Wars, and will always voice their opinions. It's true that the restoration is for me, and it's true that I put up the site to inspire, inform, and motivate people about just what can be done to help preserve this great film. Debates about preservation versus restoration are largely academic, and everyone is free to do their own. In any case, I read every post on this board, and I'm honored to have all of you take the time to weigh in, offer opinions, help, advice, etc.

_Mike

Absolutely amazing. Seriously i am in los angeles and i would gladly take the heat for torrenting these masterpieces when they are done. I am sure they would leave many of the other restorations in the dust.
Besides for that i read the site and it is amazing what you do but i have to admit i am lost over 90% of the time and if i tried to do what you are doing i probably would fry my system.

I'm sorry to hear that Mike. I hope you have good year this year.

I don't have any problem with anything anyone says about my restoration.

Thankyou Mike. I will start a new fresh thread dedicated to that debate, as it has been in your thread far too long.

-edit- just to clarrify I didn't start the thread for debate, just for people to share their own individual thoughts on the topic.

Long time reader, first time poster...

After browsing over your site, I must say I am amazingly impressed with your work... it shows a level of knowledge and commitment that would seem to far outshadow many others.

I do have a couple of questions:
a) Are you planning on doing all three movies, or just Star Wars
b) Many here have said that you've said that you're never releasing these, but I don't think you've said that have you... you aren't allowed to sell, or screen commercially the results of your efforts, but if a bittorrent happened to get out, perhaps one that was only for those who had already bought the DVD wouldn't be frowned upon. (Which would rule me out as I refuse to buy them until a proper version of the OT is available for purchase)
c) I know that you have very eloquently stated that your intention is to preserve the 'experience' rather than the film as closely as it actually was when released, and I'm in agreeance with you up to a point there... there's those that seem to obsess about it far too much... I mean really, does it really matter if it says Episode IV or not at the begining of the crawl? How does that affect the actual movie... What I'm a little iffy about (don't get me wrong though, I'm very interested in your final version) is the 'fixing' of effects they didn't get right back then, like the speeder smudge under it, or the little jumps due to cuts for effects etc... I'm all for being able to still see those things as it was what was achievable THEN... from a film history point of view, being able to say to someone "See, see how great this film is, how amazing it really does look? And this was all done in 1976!" is surely of major worth for future generations of film buffs and students etc.? With the actual releases that Lucas provides it's a case of "See, see how good that bit... no, that bit there... no, not that bit... wait, ok this bit, and that over there, but not the windows there... all of that, well, minus the CG creature over there... that was done in 1976! Oh, wait... no... no, that was 'fixed up in 1997'"... it doesn't sit well.... Your version, while not having the CG etc (Well, actually it does now doesn't it... really, with the laser flash), does have 'clean ups' of original effects... not to their original versions, but better than original...

I suppose I don't really care, as I do have the best available 'untouched' versions around from prior LD-DVD conversion... and it's certainly watchable... so for me I have the ability to be able to watch them again... but I do wonder if there will ever be a widely available version that will ever be able to be studied by special effects students of the future with the simple point that 'And it was all done in 1976'....

I don't think Mike wants it released in any way, shape or form since it'd obviously lead straight back to him considering he's not really doing this secretly or under an assumed name.

And the whole topic of "what are the ethics of changing effects shots, shouldn't you be preserving the original, etc..." is kind of a touchy dead horse that's been beaten far too many times.

Heck, I'd say you couldn't even beat it anymore. It's more like a puddle of something formerly known as "horse" being stomped around in gleefully by a few (one) people on the boards.

Oh well.

Anyway, welcome aboard!
