What English word can have 4 of its 5 letters removed and still retain it's original pronunciation?
Easy. Queue.

A woman goes into a hardware store to buy something for her house. When asked the price, the clerk replies, "the price of one is twelve cents, the price of forty-four is twenty-four cents, and the price a hundred and forty-four is thirty-six cents. What does the woman want to buy?
Nails? The question is left too open.

as far as the second riddle in his post, its house numbers, you know the metal numbers you put on your door.

each number is 12 cents

the number 1 (one number) is 12 cents
the number 44 (2 numbers) is 24 cents
the number 144 (3 numbers) is 36 cents

and providing im right, since i still dont have a riddle ill pass it off to warbler who was the one that really got the cow riddle (at least i wouldnt have gotten it if not for his post)

Well, if Warbler doesnt want it then i guess its still my turn. Here you go

There are three light bulbs in a room, and three light switches outside the room. You are outside, and want to match up which switch goes with which light bulb. You can only travel into the room once, and cannot come back in again. You can do anything you want upon entering the room. How can you set the situation so that you will know which switch goes with which light bulb?

I go into the room and use the phone to call over a friend and ask him to flip light switches, while I observe which light bulbs go on and off?

Right. And there's another one (which I hadn't known about). Aitch.

And Darth Simon was correct. It is house numbers. Very good.

I'm sorry for jumping people's turns, but I love riddles and I wouldn't want to see the topic die.

can I see the lightbulbs from outside the room?
Author

no, only way you can see the lightbulbs is to actually enter the room

I hate to admit it, but I'm stumped.

Leave one switch on, leave one switch off, and the other switch you turn on and off as fast as you can, for hours. Get in the room. The turned on lightbulb is the one with the turned on switch. Take that lamp off, and plug one of the other two lightbulbs (both will be turned off). If that one doesn't work, that means it's the lightbulb you were turning on and off (until the ligthbulb got burned off), and the other one belongs to the switch you turned off. Got it?

I think I've got the answer. Turn two switches on, wait 5 minutes, turn one off. Enter the room. One will be on, that's the on switch. One will be off and cold - that the switch you didn't touch. One will be off and hot - that's the one you just turned back off before entering.

That's... an even better answer than mine... I feel... so ashamed...

of course! how could I not think of that? duh! *Warbler slaps self in face again*

although I do have one question, why turn on 2 light switches to start with? Why not just turn on 1, wait 5 minutes, turn it off then turn another switch on and then walk into the room? You end up with the same results:

1 light bulb on
1 light bulb off and warm
1 light bulb off and cool

Well to stick with the light-bulb riddles, here's one:

100 prisoners are imprisoned in solitary cells. Each cell is windowless and soundproof. There's a central living room with one light bulb; the bulb is initially off. No prisoner can see the light bulb from his or her own cell. Each day, the warden picks a prisoner equally at random, and that prisoner visits the central living room; at the end of the day the prisoner is returned to his cell. While in the living room, the prisoner can toggle the bulb if he or she wishes. Also, the prisoner has the option of asserting the claim that all 100 prisoners have been to the living room. If this assertion is false (that is, some prisoners still haven't been to the living room), all 100 prisoners will be shot for their stupidity. However, if it is indeed true, all prisoners are set free since the world can always use more smart people.

Before this whole procedure begins, the prisoners are allowed to get together in the courtyard to discuss a plan. What is the optimal plan they can agree on, so that eventually, someone will make a correct assertion with 100% accuracy?

...

I am currently working on the most optimal plan, I do believe that I've got it. Yes, I know if they wait 3 years then there's a 99.9% chance they've all been there, but we want to be 100% certain. 99.9999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999% is not good enough. Good luck.
