Alicia Keys just released a song with a phone number in it that is real. However it is to a phone line that she owns. What she failed to specify in her song, however, was the area code. She only has the phone number in NYC. When you call it outside that area code, who knows what you'll get. There's been a pretty big beef lately over that. But not nearly as large a flap as with Tutone as his was a huge radio hit and everyone knew the number.
Yeah, sometimes a movie or TV show will have a real number accidentally and it will cause some problems initially. But for the most part, phone numbers with a 555 (or "KL5" as in the case of The Simpsons) prefix are used because they go straight to an operator when you call regardless of area code.
