This is starting to happen over here, too. Until about 4 or 5 years ago, there were almost no huge videostores like blockbuster (there were a few), every videostore was small and run by families and something, really "clerks" like... I used to rent movies in a place run by my former grade school teacher. And you could find some really obscure films such as "Traces of Death", and some weird foreign films. But now they are all being destroyed by those huge videostores filled with crappy movies, with 14 year old attendents with more zips than a post office.
