A message to Jay in regards to DanielB — Page 2

I think the real problem with DanielB is that he doesn't realize he is being an asshole. In one thread he'll say somebody is ruining the original trilogy by making their DVD anamorphic and in the next he'll be normalish.

To further my recommendation for an "ignore" function ... in all fairness to all users and to what's being said, I think the "ignore" can have two subfunctions (were it to be programmed in the first place).

1) Ignore user (this thread only)
2) Ignore user (all threads)

I came up with this notion based on the idea that it can keep posts on topic without outright banning certain people. After all, users may wish to ignore me in MVerta's thread after the silliness I posted there. But some users may still find value in what I say elsewhere. Or, maybe there's somebody out there who finds me obnoxious enough to ignore altogether. I hope not in both cases, but everybody's a pain to somebody. Point is, the ignore user could be implemented two ways if it were so programmed and may thus be much more useful and less censoring than just the one, outright ignore all feature.

Again, just trying to provide a constructive solution. Jay, you may PM me if it's a programming/resource issue. On the whole I'm a crappy programmer, but I have a host of genius programmers who work for me, at least one of whom is an OT devotee. If I can't hack it together, I hopefully can find somebody who can.

I can program. Im pretty busy with a project at work, but if it would help keep the people doing the OT preservation projects on the board id be willing to looking into writing a plug in (and actually making it if its doable) or something that would give an ignore function like what ADigitalMan described

Couple comments:

I do think this would have been a little more effective if it'd been directly PM'd and emailed to Jay, with links directing him to the offending posts. This seems to be more like a duplicate bitch thread, where there's already threads directly concerning the drama DanielB stirred up. Continuing the discussion in those thread lends it an easier context.

Also, I very much applaud Laserman's efforts, and I'm also willing to pitch in some bucks, especially if I know those files are going to Zion, who's work I think is the best I've seen so far, and I've already volunteered a custom cover for. But for almost ANY undertaking worth a crap, there's going to be at least ONE yahoo trying to clown you for it. The trick is to not let that one yahoo discourage you from doing what you want to do. Whether it be writing a book, singing a song, or even something like transferring a video

And while it might sound silly to try and look on the bright side of this--maybe this was the kick in the ass the posters here needed. We've been getting a LOT of stuff VERY easily. Look at this forum: There's almost 10 separate OT captures floating around with their own threads. That's a pretty wide range of captures to grab from, all free, all giving us Star Wars goodness that we really want in a non-degradable form. Maybe we got a little spoiled. And while I don't want to give DanielB any credit, but maybe Laserman's potential "Taking the ball and going home" posts were what we needed to realize we can't take this stuff for granted. Hopefully it's not too little, too late, and Laserman doesn't actually take his ball and go home. Especially since, with as much work as he's already put into it, it'd be a shame to stop now simply because one jackass with a keyboard is running his mouth.

And while the earlier message "Just grow up" was a little too curt and condescending--there is something to be taken from that. While DanielB's complaints aren't really constructive at all, it's just as equally non-constructive to get so rattled by one wackjob's rantings that you question your entire reasoning for doing it. If it's really something you want to do, you can't let the naysayers talk you out of it.

I hope I'm not stepping on toes. I've been that jackass naysayer a couple times, and I've learned it doesn't help, and being a self-righteous prick doesn't necessarily mean you're actually making the world a better place. Most times it simply means "Look at me, look how superior I am. Bask in my aura of righteousness, and behold as I preach from my soapbox."

You can't let that wind you up to the point you just give up. It's not fair to yourself. And it's not fair to everyone else to focus so much on the negative, either. Starting a thread like this simply adds more fuel to the fire, good intentions or no.

I hope Laserman stops by a couple times, and reads this, and knows the deal. And I hope he decides to keep on keeping on.

Wow, I know I've been gone for a while, but I had no idea that something like this had happened to the board.

After reading some of the posts to catch up I must agree with most of the sentiments shared here. It's unfortunate that one individual has had such a negative impact on the community here, but this can happen anywhere in life. While we're often forced to accept such conditions (such as at work, etc) this board and Star Wars in general is meant to be fun! And when it isn't anymore I can see why people will just want to go. I just want let Laserman know (and all the other hardworking contributing members) that I really appreciate your efforts. In the future when things have cooled down and after a well deserved break if you ever decide to change your mind about this whole thing I hope you will come back.

As for the rest of the projects, while it may seem too late to offer any help now, I'm part of that silent majority that really enjoys what you all do, but doesn't always make it known. I agree with the Bizzle that most people need a kick in the pants sometimes once they get a little lazy and complacent as you can add me to the 'johnny come lately camp.' I know that Laserman didn't get the groundswell of support that he had expected, but perhaps this is just the kind of thing that was needed to get it started.

In any case I hope that the good peope still here will stick together and get through this. As they say through thick and thin, good times and bad, that's when you know you've made a real friend. It would be a shame if things had to end like this.

Laserman,

We do care for the work you've done and I'm sure that you've noticed now that you do have DIEHARD supporters here. I get SO many nay sayers in my efforts to bring these wonderful projects to the the Star Wars internet community via the biittorrents and sometimes it makes me sick to read all the negative blah blah blah's that they toss my way and even more frustrated by those that endlessly complain about how I post them and they they don't have "seeders" - whine grumble grumble sniff sniff - Screw them all Laserman!

I have found support with the friends that I've found here on these boards and on myspleen.net ~ I see many of the same supporters here in this thread that have helped me stay the course. STAR WARS is important (but not more then my family!) and I do owe my continued efforts to fans like MeBeJedi, Ryan, ADigitalMan, Darth Osor, Russs15, Sweyland, Zion, MagnoliaFan, Grisan, oojason, Bad Ash (I did not forget you all - it's just there have been many!) and of course you Laserman - we may have only spoke a few times via PM but your dedication is something I've always been inspired by when my faith falters.

DanielB,

None of this excuses the FACT that YOU chased off what could have been the definitive back up, used for any number of great personal projects.

None of this explains how WE are going get a decent copy of the OT.

If you're such a decent person - why have you pissed off so many people???

My gosh, I haven't posted so much to this board since I signed on. I understood that I have very little to add because, I have little tech knowledge, I don't have cool equip or software, I only have one set of OT LD's (which are promised to Zion, if he still wants them), SE OT LD's and the 2004 DVD's. BUT YOU have disrupted 2 maybe 3 excellent projects. FOR WHAT!!! Because you don't like the way somebody uses the term "PRESERVATION"!!!! , because you disagree w/ how somebody uses the "OT Preservation Board".

WHAT IS YOUR PROBLEM???

Anyway, I don't get...

The thread-jacking needs to stop.
The name-calling needs to stop as well.

I wonder if the Ignore User function will recognize wildcards ?

To be fair, DanielB's post wasn't entirely off-topic, as this site is here to discuss fictional stories.

Nice way to drum up false sympathy. Don't let it hit you on the way out.

What all this really comes down to is a question of forum etiquette. It's obvious that this board is unmoderated for the most part and this simply isn't working anymore. There is no need for the trash this board has recently treaded, and there's really no reason why it needs to continue. If I were Jay I'd appoint a moderator to keep the peace. If you need a volunteer, sign me up.

Zion's got my support. I typically avoid the preservation section simply because so much of it is way over my head. I'm not A/V techie and the only thread in here of interest to me otherwise is the DVD cover thread.

But to come in here on a whim today and read that there is somebody on the forum that people regard with even more ire than Jimbo (and I was constantly wading through the shitpool that was Jimbo and his ranting and raving), it really scares me.

Who's contacting Jay with the request?
