To further my recommendation for an "ignore" function ... in all fairness to all users and to what's being said, I think the "ignore" can have two subfunctions (were it to be programmed in the first place).

1) Ignore user (this thread only)
2) Ignore user (all threads)

I came up with this notion based on the idea that it can keep posts on topic without outright banning certain people. After all, users may wish to ignore me in MVerta's thread after the silliness I posted there. But some users may still find value in what I say elsewhere. Or, maybe there's somebody out there who finds me obnoxious enough to ignore altogether. I hope not in both cases, but everybody's a pain to somebody. Point is, the ignore user could be implemented two ways if it were so programmed and may thus be much more useful and less censoring than just the one, outright ignore all feature.

Again, just trying to provide a constructive solution. Jay, you may PM me if it's a programming/resource issue. On the whole I'm a crappy programmer, but I have a host of genius programmers who work for me, at least one of whom is an OT devotee. If I can't hack it together, I hopefully can find somebody who can.
