You have a DVD player from 1960?

They're color.

I've never seen a black and white DVD player, or a DVD player made in the 1960s...

This thread gave me an Idea: how about watching the OT in B&W?

Theoretically that could be done on a Color TV if there's a menu option to adjust the color.

It might make the cursed yellow blob on my Magnavox bigscreen less noticable.

I know it can be done and my TV does just that, I might try it tomorrow: It'll give me a new perspective on things.

When I read the topic, I thought he meant that lost b&w version of star wars with alternate scenes and rear-projection instead of bluscreen.

No, I was just kidding, of course there were no DVD players in 60's and certainly no BW players.
And of course what kind of culturally-ignorant moron would I have to be to think that
SW is a BW movie

To colorblind people, it is.

Colorblind people don't see B&W, they mix colors... green/orange colorblindness is a common one.

I can't say I've ever heard of a case of someone only able to see in B&W. Animals on the other hand...

There is an extremly rare condition of colorblindness in which people see in b&w.

what about not being able to see black and white? Like only being able to see colors, that would be wierd if even possible. I know its all some rod and cones thing but my bio knowledge is severely lacking.

It might be possible to have an inability to see white, but when a cone dies, all you see there is black, I think. So you'll allways "see black" as long as you still have some vision.

That's freaky. I've never heard of this before.

Complete inability to distinguish any colors is called monochromacy. It occurs in two forms: cone monochromacy, where only a single cone system appears to be functioning, so that no colors can be distinguished, but vision is otherwise more or less normal; and achromatopsia, or maskun, or rod monochromacy where the retina contains no cone cells, so that in addition to the absence of color discrimination, vision in lights of normal intensity is difficult.

While normally rare, complete color blindness (maskun) is very common in Pohnpei: about 1/12 of the population there has maskun.

It's really rare, only a small fraction of colorblind people have this condition. I remember reading about it some time ago.

I'd never heard of Pohnpei. Just googled it. Small islands near Guam and the Marshall Islands. Learn something new every day.

there was a b&w version with rear-projection?

There was a lost rough cut of Star Wars found some years ago. It had deteriorated all to b&w and the soundtrack was lost. Running on aprox 2 hours and 20 minutes, it had lots of different footage, and was really slow paced, with a documentary feel into it. Featured the Biggs scene, Solo kissing the girl, Luke and threepio talking in the speeder (this can be seen on the DVD documentary), more scenes featuring Grand Moff Tarkin, more scenes featuring the Death Star escape, and most of the special effects were not done. The shots inside the Milenium Falcom were shot using rear-projection (the rear projection can be seen on the DVDs), which resulted on inferior quality.
