Cartoons!

Hey, Alll..

I'm not sure exactly how well this threads gonna go over, but hey, if nothing else it will boost my post count by one.

This is here to discuss cartoons of anykind. Well.. maybe not anykind. Like Japanese gay propaganda cartoons, but I think you can figure it out. LOL.

Anyway. First topic: If you care, which Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles series is better? the old one from 87 to 96, or the new one that's now on Fox and Cartoon Network. I'll go with the old one.

Does this include Anime or just American "cartoons"?

Waaaait a freaking minute! Did you just called anime "Japanese gay propaganda cartoons"?!?!?!

Yeah, anime is fine too, and no, ric, I wasn't reffering to all anime.

I just meant the really messed up stuff that they don't dub here. I like Dragon Ball Z and the Original DB a lot, and I enjoyed Gundam WIng and YuYu Hakusho. But I just find most Anime way too steeped in Japansese sensibilities to really get into it.

Like Wolf Rain. What the kriff is with that show? And of course there's all the awful acting. I swear it seems like some anime imort companies find the worst actors imaginable for their shows.

But people still buy it and don't complain about horrible voice acting so the studios think they can get away with (and do).

That is probably why a substantial percentage of the fans that are all "OVA or nothing" just watch the original VO versions.

I do not know the acronyms OVA and VO.

So. What do you think of the old Turtle's show compared to the new one?

OVA: Original Voice Acting
VO: Voice Over

Edit: I never really watched either show to tell you the truth and I really don't watch these new age cartoons.

You're missing some good stuff.

Edit: But most of it is crap.

I grew up watching classic cartoons and still to this day enjoy watching them. I don't care all that much for Japanese anime, but it's okay, I guess. I like the original Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (haven't seen the current one), Thundercats, He-Man, Voltron, The Transformers (original series), Looney Toons/Merrie Melodies, and just about any classic Hanna-Barbera cartoon (The Flintstones, The Jetsons, Yogi Bear, etc..). Contrary to popular belief, cartoons aren't just for kids. The Flintstones originally aired during prime time and adults enjoyed watching it.

I used to be completely obsessed with Looney Toons, but I'm mostly over that now.

The new turtles cartoon is better as an action cartoon, but it doesn't have the cool factor of the old one. It's too modern, and the dialogue is really horrible because the words "kill" and "die" are allways substitued for words that people never say in that context. Like all of cartoon networks shows anymore.

Just look at Justice League and Teen Titans. Nobody ever dies, and the bad guys insist on "finishing" or "destroying" the heroes. Makes it loose some of the impact it should have IMHO.

Which reminds me: does anybody else remember the Canadian dub of Dragon Ball Z by Pioneerwhere nobody ever died? It was so stupid. They were allways "blasted into another dimension." Or once, When Vegeta and Nappa first crash on earth, they plow through a bunch of buildings. Vegeta actually says "It's too bad it's Sunday, or those buildings would have been full."

Funny stuff.

I watched the old cartoon it was good. I saw one episode of the new one and quit. I agree with Darth Chaltab cartoons are loosing the impact that they once had. (sigh)
The decline of cartoons... what was wrong with classical music and plots that made you laugh well teaching a moral/lesion or were just plain neat. I guess that you couldn't say -Looney Toons- was the best shaper of young minds, but I would take it over a modern cartoon/anime any day.

OK Darth Chaltab... But what were you refering to? Shounen-ai? Yaoi?

I'm a huge fan of anime as you can see, but I'm not too fond of american and/or european animation, at least not lately. I enjoyed some of WB's cartoons, the old ones and the new ones such as loony toons, animaniacs, freakazoid and stuff. I also enjoyed the original teenage mutants ninja turtles (answering your question, I didn't even KNOW there was a new one), and thundercats. Nowadays, I kinda like the simpsons, and any movie feature animation such as shrek, or anything by pixar, but that's it. Anime is the only real animation I enjoy watching.

My favorite cartoon of all time has to be the first couple of seasons of WB's Batman TAS.

Dude how many times must they restart the superhero continuities?

Batman TAS was a freakin' awesome series but they've replaced it with this stupid "The Batman" with horrible GC animation and a Joker that looks more at home in a greek myth cartoon than in batman. He looks like a drunken Medusa with bloodshot eyes.

I really didn't like Batman TAS by the time it changed its name to Batman and Robin, it just took on a whole different feel.

I never knew they changed its' name. I just meant on the whole, it was really cool, and that's why the same Batman persona and continuity was used for the Justice League Batman.

"The Batman" is completely different--it's stupid crap for todays little kids. The animation is something like the GC game Killer 7, and Joker just looks terrible.

I know about The Batman and I agree completely, Kevin Conroy doesn't do his voice does he?

Dunno, you should check TV Tome or IMDB.

He rules in the old series and Justice League though. Mostly, though, I've been getting into Danny Phantom lately. Yeah, I know it's on Nick, but it's serioulsy really good, especially Episode 9.

Edit: BUt not as good as Justice Leauge.

Meh, Nick died in like 1998. All that is left is a shell.

Or maybe I outgrew it, I dunno.

I'm having trouble Identifying a show I saw on cartoon network's Toonami from around 97-98 I'll see what info I can remember about it.

I know there are a bunch of Jets that can turn into humanoid mechs.

The most distinct visual memory that I can remember is that close to the end of the series the pilot of the mech was laying in some desert with a woman cradling his head (he is injured) after they crashed the mech about 10 miles from a huge city after blowing up a huge spaceship in the sky(in which he flew in and blew up the core I think).

And I know that this Anime is not Robotech and I'm pretty sure that it is not any Gundam Series.

I know its not much, but can anyone identify it?

Could it have been Voltron?

Voltron was a very power-ranger esque giant robot show, but there were jets that fused into a Giant robot named (gasp) Voltron.

On a side note: DBZ skips the Sevens and goes to an 8.2!

It seems like it would fit, but I'm looking it up right now and it doesn't seem right.
