Video Games - a general discussion thread — Page 15

As I've said many times, I tend to sit about a year behind the gaming world so that I can buy for 10-20 bucks a pop. Sometimes I can't wait, but most of the time it's a good deal. So I actually look forward to games that are already out. Go figure.

Can't wait for the price to drop on:
Ninja Gaiden
Ratchet and Jak 3
Fable
Xmen Legends
Halo 2 (I'll probably jump the gun on that one, just to play with my old college roomies on the net)
KOTOR 2
Star Ocean

And the ones I'm actually looking forward to:
Xenosaga 2
Kingdom Hearts 2
Far Cry (xbox)
Jade Empire
Republic Commando (although it's possible the graphics/engine will be way behind the curve, as Lucas arts tends to be. Playing through Bounty Hunter, it looks like they borrowed some textures from Dark Forces and/or Shadows of the Empire. Trade franchise for quality, as usual)

And if I ever get a gamecube:
Metroids
Any and all Zeldas
Mario sunshine and kart
If you're going to take forever, then I'm having a hotdog!

Resident Evil 4 looks pretty sweet. I never really liked the Resident Evil games, but they say this one has a totally different control scheme.

The gamecube remake has had me ready for this one since it was announced.

Yeah, the control scheme turned me off on the RE games.

I don't understand why people continuously complain about the controls.

If you coud run in full Three-D motion and pull of all kinds of killer combos, then RE would lose it's point. It wouldn' be frightening at all, becaue 80% of the fear factor comes from being unable to react quickly. Whether intentional or not, the controls seem to simulate BAR and the fight of flight or freeze response.

REIV is different in that it limits your view (you can't see behind you) but gives you a fixed camera angle to steer from. Then it throws a screen-load of enemies at you.

That's not why I don't like it. I can deal with the camera, the slow response time, and the lack of being able to move in any direction. My complaint is literally the controls, not the game engine. It would be 100% better if they utilized both analog sticks. They didn't do this because at the time Resident Evil was being developed on the playstation, analog sticks didn't exist. Then they just went with it, and for some reason they wanted the remakes to be as faithful to the originals as possible, crappy control scheme included. Rotating in place before you can move???? C'mon, it's 2004!

Well.

In the GC version, you can use a quick turn by holding be and tapping down.

I have yet to even try out the DS, but GameInformer gave the first round of games a pretty bad grade. For you guys who've played it, is this true?

I've not played much more than the First Hunt demo at various game retailers.

But every publication I've read says that most of the DS launch games are pretty good, but don't quite live up to their potential, or are too short to reccomend highly. The exception being Ping Pals, which comes from THQ, which has a wonderful track record. (not)

Ping Pals
Sprung: Everybody Scores
Mario Sixty-Four
Ridge Racer
Feel the Magic: Ex Why Ex Ex
Urban Asphalt Grand Tour
Spiderman II

Most current launch titles are getting above average reviews, except for Mario Sixty Four, of course, but it is a port. Really anyone adopting the DS this early is doing so on potential and not actual substance yet. But what potential it has!

MORTAL KOMBAT DEADLY ALLIANCE WAS JUST TOO DAMN EASY. ONE OF THE THINGS THAT I'VE ENJOYED THROUGHOUT THE SERIES IS THE STORY. HOWEVER, I THINK THAT IT'S TIME FOR THE SERIES TO FINALLY COME TO AN END OR GET BACK TO ITS ROOTS.

How can a multiplayer game bee to easy? Does that not depend on your opponents?

But as good as DA and Deception have been, I really hope that Midway doesn't retire it.

Even if they have to go the Capcom route and skimp on story. SF doesn't have a story worth mentioning and it's still popular among the 'hardcore' crowd. Or perhaps release remixes and bianual updates. Or perhaps remake older games in the series with the new engine.

All you have to do is tell them they are being attacked and denounce the pacifists for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. eh. I don't really count SSB or the far superior SSBM as fighting games.

Or mabe they're like 'aleternative fighting' since they only fit part of the fighting mold.

You get to punch someone? It's a fighting game.

but I think you're right, they are not the "2 players per fight with lifebar" fighting game... OK so replace it with uh... the bootleg Street Fighter done in China for the NES back in 1993, that featured Super Mario as one of the fighters! (no I'm not joking, this game existed)

I've been wanting a game like that to exist for a long time!

SSBA. Super Smash Bros Advance. Nothing like the first two games, this Capcom developed traditional brawler pits all of Nintendo's mascots against each other in a Street Fighter-esque setting, along with some of Capcoms favorites such as Joe and Dante. DCGR Magazine gives this game an 8.5--out of Ten.

Ah. I can fantasize.

Yeah. But it's boring to play when no one else wants to. No body I know gives a Kessel about VF4.

All my friends say I play the game because of fact that the wind seems to have a ridiculously strong effect on Pai's... Yeah...
And all I can say to that is, if I was looking for that in a fighting game, I would have gotten DOA Ultimate.
